The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond A dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music James Gabrillo Peterhouse, University of Cambridge November 2018 This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other quali- fication at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution. It does not exceed the word limit prescribed by the Degree Committee. "2 of 293" The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond James Gabrillo Abstract This dissertation provides the first detailed account of the mass musical culture of the Philippines that originated in the 1990s and continues to be the most popular style of musical entertainment in the country — a scene I dub the New Manila Sound. Through a combination of archival research, musical analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork, my ex- amination focuses on its two major pioneers: the musical television programme Eat Bula- ga! (Lunchtime Surprise) and the pop-rock band Aegis. I document the scene’s rise and development as it attracted mostly consumers from the lower classes and influenced oth- er programmes and musicians to adapt its content and aesthetics. The scene’s trademark kitsch qualities of parody, humour, and exaggeration served as forms of diversion to au- diences recovering from the turbulent dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1986, when musical works primarily comprised of state-commissioned nationalist an- thems, Western art music, and protest songs.

  • The Female Detective Through Popular Culture: Kate Beckett in Castle
The Female Detective through Popular Culture: Kate Beckett in Castle Student: Ariadna Cañadas Rico Tutor: Isabel Santaulària Capdevila Department of English and Linguistics 10/06/2014 Abstract Popular culture has been argued to construct and perpetrate most of society‟s current ideas and beliefs, especially when taking into account its representation of gender roles. The following dissertation will study how popular culture has acted in the construction of the professional woman and, more specifically, of the female detective character. This preliminary research shows that professional women in media are often subject to patriarchy and deemed to domestic life, as working aspirations become sources of female anguish. Following an in-depth analysis of Kate Beckett as a product of a female detective TV series, the final aim of this project will be to defend the character‟s potential as a good professional female detective even though it is a constituent of popular culture. The application of cultural and feminist studies to the character‟s analysis will corroborate the assumption of Det. Kate Beckett as an adequate feminist role model. Keywords: popular culture, detective fiction, feminist detective fiction, gender, Castle, Kate Beckett. Contents 1. • Stana Amelia Paterson
Practitioner’s Statement Stana Amelia Paterson My main artistic influence within the piece was the work of realistic pastel portrait artist Graciela Bombalova. Her angelic and soft depictions of her subjects intrigued me to begin to explore works in pastel—a previously unfamiliar medium. I also researched the famous artist Edgar Degas, who used some unusual techniques within his vibrant pastel works. Degas’ pastel pieces are full of movement and liveliness; however, I wanted my work to be more static, with energy and emotion displayed in the facial features of the subject. The bright colours of Annette Bezor and Marion Bolognesi’s works also acted as inspiration, as I wanted to achieve a very bright and striking look, taking full advantage of the pure pigments in pastel. I also attended Bezor’s exhibition at the Hill Smith Gallery and was taken aback by the scale, but also the detail in her large portraits. Bezor’s more recent work depicts celebrities and their effect on society and vice versa, and this prompted me to look into depicting a celebrity, of such, within my own work. I chose the actress Stana Katic as the subject of my pastel portrait as her enigmatic nature, passion, and zest for life act as an inspiration to me. I first discovered Stana’s work through the television show Castle, which is very close to my family’s heart. Castle acts as an escapism from the troubles of life, and the viewings have strengthened integral bonds within my family network. Stana’s character within Castle—Kate Beckett—is also one of my inspirations, and I can most definitely relate to her flawed nature.

Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT GAFFNEY, JESSICA E., M.A., March 2011, Media Arts & Studies Evolving Gender Hybridity in the Crime Solving Partnerships of 'Bones' and 'Castle': A Study of the Move Away from Gender Binaries in Media and Society Director of Thesis: Joseph Slade The crime solving genre provides a perfect venue for study of the changing expectations of gender shifts in society. The two programs which provide the best examples are Castle and Bones. In each of these television shows, there is a male- female crime-solving dyad which reflect social and economic trends in the larger culture. In both, different gendered behaviors are blended to create a new type of character— more interesting than the stereotypical crime-solver of the past. This gender ambiguity can be viewed as the basis for hybridity.
