Ana Paula dos Santos1 Júlio França2 A aclamada série de televisão Twin Peaks (1990-1991), idealizada por David Lynch e Mark Frost, narra a investigação de um estranho assassinato que choca os moradores de uma pacata cidade do interior dos Estados Unidos. A vítima é Laura Palmer, uma estudante de dezessete anos que fora assassinada após sofrer agressão física e sexual. A investigação do crime é conduzida pela polícia local com o auxílio do agente do FBI Dale Cooper, e acaba revelando um lado sombrio da personalidade da vítima. Laura era sem dúvida uma jovem gentil, responsável e caridosa, mas também estava envolvida com traições e adultério, drogas e prostituição. A descoberta dessa vida dupla faz vir à tona outros segredos obscuros da cidade de Twin Peaks: entre os crimes e as transgressões cometidos às escondidas pelos moradores estão tráfico de drogas, violência doméstica, aliciamento de menores e exploração sexual – apenas para citar alguns exemplos. Além desses horrores, Cooper precisa lidar também com as forças sobrenaturais que povoam a cidade: entidades misteriosas aparecem nos sonhos do agente do FBI sob a forma de anões e gigantes, e até mesmo um duplo de Laura Palmer revela pistas que ajudam a desvendar o crime. Cooper descobre, então, que o próprio assassino de Laura estava possuído por uma entidade maligna responsável pela tortura e morte de outras adolescentes. Ao final do caso, as palavras do agente para a mãe de Laura ajudam a personagem – e também os espectadores – a aceitar os estranhos acontecimentos relacionados à morte da jovem e à própria cidade de Twin Peaks: “Sra.

His films capture a challenge to the audience to figure things out for themselves and to make their own something menacing and disturbing, often by combining the mundane with the surreal interpretations. To paraphrase something he said years ago: Life doesn’t always make but just as often going full bore into the heart of evil. Themes of duality, especially in his sense, so why should films? female characters, and sexual violence exist in the day-to-day worlds of both the urban And then there are The Kills, the kind of vampyric duo—blade thin, as though and the rural. Whereas traditional film noir kept its violence limited to the metropolis, carved from wood with a straight razor—that Lynch would conjure if he were to write Lynch subverts this idea. As he exhibited with Twin Peaks, the woods were just as a pulp film about a band. Their music is the lost soundtrack to a scratched celluloid menacing, if not more so, than any concrete jungle. It’s as if he were taking traditional black and white getaway flick from the French New Wave. Dirtily gorgeous, they are Grimm fairy tales as a starting point and going deeper into the furthest recesses of the musical equivalent of Sailor and Lula from Wild at Heart, guitars and microphones the forests of depravity. Drugs, murder, rape, incest? You betcha. Neither is suburbia substituted for guns and cars.

Lynch, who already has about as much cachet as any living American filmmaker could, seems lately to have expanded his preoccupations decisively beyond film, having branched out into pop music with his recent album "Crazy Clown Time," and even nightclub design with the opening of his Club Silencio in Paris last year. His efforts as a visual artist, however, stretch back decades, running in tandem with his more famous career as an auteur. It was as an art student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts that he first discovered the moving image, making the short animated film "Six Men Getting Sick" (1966) to give life to one of his paintings. Not so long ago, he had a full-blown career retrospective of his painting and sculpture at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. His solo exhibition at the Upper East Side's Jack Tilton gallery, however, is his first gallery outing in New York in decades. The modestly sized show encompasses a series of newish paintings, some on cardboard panels and with bulky gold frames, some with Christmas tree lights poking through the background. The protagonists of these paintings are generally boys, often with bulbous or misshapen body parts, often frozen in the middle of some absurd moment of self-mutilation or savagery.
