In accordance with the procedures at reference, EADRCC has received today, 14:32 October 2009 UTC, a disaster assistance request from Ukraine. The following information was provided. 2. General Situation 2.1. Recently the epidemiological situation regarding cases of acute respiratory disease has considerably aggravated in the Western regions of Ukraine. According to the information provided by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, an active epidemic process has started in Ukraine in respect of acute respiratory diseases (both of seasonal character and of the pandemic flu A/H1N1). 2.2. As of 08:00 on 31 October, according to the operational information, there have been 165,182 illnesses registered with influenza virus and acute respiratory infections among them 5,239 people have been hospitalized and 39 died. The deaths were registered in the following Oblasts: Lviv - 15, Ternopil - 13, Chernivetska 4, Ivano- Frankivsk 6 and in Rivne 1. 2.3. The highest number of illnesses was registered as follows: in Lviv Oblast - 53290 illnesses registered and 893 people were hospitalized; in Ternopil Oblast - 29,655 illnesses registered and 1784 people were hospitalized; in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast - 17,624 illnesses registered and 345 people were hospitalized; in Chernivtsy Oblast - 18,786 illnesses registered and 263 people were hospitalized. The other Oblasts of Ukraine have been also affected by influenza epidemic: Donetsk Oblast, Vynnytsa Oblast, Rivne Oblast, Khmelnytsk Oblast, Volyn Oblast, Kyiv Oblast and Zakarpatia Oblast. 2.5. On 30 October the Government of Ukraine has imposed the quarantine regime in 9 western regions of Ukraine (Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankiwsk, Zakarpattya, Chernivtsy, Rivne, Volyn, Khmelnytsk and Vinnytsa). The special Decree aimed at prevention of further expansion of the flu epidemic was adopted by the Government. Additionally, a strict sanitary control at the national border was imposed. 3. National resources available for disaster response and measures taken. 3.1. All available national resources are dealing with the situation. 4.
