Performed on Seth Meyers and CBS Saturday Morning already Great reaction 303 Magazine reviews Catfish and the Bottlemen’s Denver show “Welsh pop-rock band Catfish and the Bottlemen is coming of age, and they want you to know it. A product of this growing-up is the upcoming release of the group’s third record, The Ride, from which the group showcased songs during a performance Friday night at the Ogden Theatre. As is often the case for any band stumbling into in- ternational success, there are few expectations for who — or what — will be found in the audience across the pond. This group’s Denver fans didn’t disappoint — people of all ages buzzed around the venue, feeding into the steadfast and sanguine energy that is Catfish and the Bottlemen. Before the headliner took the stage, the Ogden went dark. Fans screamed in anticipation as audio engineers and venue staff walked onto the stage, arranging instruments and preparing the set. A phantom voice rang out, singing the Beatle’s song, “Helter Skel- ter.” Then the four members of Catfish and the Bottlemen appeared — lead singer and guitarist Van McCann, guitarist Johnny Bond, drummer Bob Hall and bass player Benji Blakeway. They broke into their first song, “Longshot,” and the crowd went wild. A highlight of the show was the clean guitar solos from Bond — emphasized by the splashing blue lights on stage, and the sense of unfeigned urgency from the band. While there may have been a slight feeling of shyness from the band at the begin- ning of the set, the last few songs of the show had McCann’s heart bleeding on stage. Perhaps the most honest moment of the night was when McCann and Bond embraced before the long, cinematic last note of “Tyrants,” the last song on Catfish and the Bottlemen’s first album. They’ve made it. It’s always fun to be a part of an audience that’s genuinely happy to be participating in the show. Friday night’s crowd had nothing but enthusiasm to show for their band — perhaps said best in the outburst from a young woman in the audience: “Be my baby daddy, Van!” Catfish and the Bottlemen are here to stay.” - 303 Magazine, April 1, 2019 Entertainment Focus focuses in on James Morrison’s new album “It’s been 13 years since James Morrison rocketed to international stardom with his debut album Undiscovered. Combining pop and soul, the singer- became a radio staple with hits such as You Give Me Something, Wonderful World and Bro- ken Strings featuring Nelly Furtado. After four studio , Morrison was dropped by his label with his last album Higher Than Here arriving in 2015. Four years on from that, and having gone through a tumultuous period in his personal life, Morri- son is back with his fifth studio album You’re Stronger Than You Know. After one listen through You’re Stronger Than You Know, you can tell that Morrison has made an album he’s been desperate to make for his entire career. The polished production of his first four albums has gone and in its place is a more raw and organic collection of songs. That doesn’t mean that the things you loved about him have gone though. His voice sounds better than it ever has, the music is still catchy and memorable, and there’s more soul flowing from each song. The album opens with My Love Goes On featuring Joss Stone, which was the obvious lead single from the record. It’s a soaring, life-affirming number with a stomping beat and strong vocals from Morrison and Stone. They complement each other so well, you wonder how they’ve never recorded a song together before. The song sets the tone for the record and there’s a lot here to enjoy and unpack. Second track Brighter Kind of Love allows Morrison’s voice to really shine, especially in the first 30-second when the instrumentation is incredibly sparse. The song opens up into a feel-good soulful jam. It sounds loose and free, with Morrison’s husky tone driving the melody. The first ballad of the album, So Beautiful, follows and it’s a real showcase for Morrison’s abilities. Accompanied by a piano with a gentle beat, Morrison’s voice shines with passion and emotion. The track positively radiates from the speakers and it’s definitely a future wedding song for fans. Elsewhere on the record the title track is a pure soul throwback, Slowly finds Morrison pushing his vocals to unleash their full power, and I Still Need You has a little country blues feel to it. Don’t Wanna Lose You Now is a song that’s sure to be a live favourite. Morrison fights to keep a relationship together over a lazy groove that makes you hope that summer days are around the corner. The standout track on the record is album closer Until the Stars Go Out. It’s one of the album’s more stripped-down moments and Morrison’s vocal is so emotive and powerful. Lyrically it deals with finding yourself a bit but having someone you can count on to help you through. You’re Stronger Than You Know is a classy record that reminds you of why Morrison has sold millions of albums in his career. It’s all about that voice and for the first time, I feel like we’re hearing it free from all the constraints that commercial pressure and production has imposed on it in the past. This album feels like a true reflection of Morrison’s artistry and it could well be his finest body of work.” - Entertainment Focus, March 2019 Brooklyn Vegan has high praise for Aldous Harding’s NYC show ““I’m not as confident as I once was,” Aldous Harding told the crowd at Rough Trade on Monday night. “But as my mum says, I’m not above practice.” Aldous was playing songs from her anticipated new album Designer for the first time, with a new band to boot. “I feel like I’m starting from the beginning,” she also said earlier in the evening, but it was a grace- ful, mesmerizing debut. Aldous played almost the entirety of Designer front-to-back, minus opening song “Fixture Picture,” and her band included some of the people who played on the record, including bassist H. Hawkline and drummer Gwion Llewelyn (plus guitarist Harry Bohay and key- boardist Mali Llywelyn Lewis). It’s an impressive set of songs that I liked immediately, start- ing with lightly groovy title track which Aldous sang, maraca in hand, while scanning the audience — the lights were aimed at the crowd and bright the whole show, it was clear she wanted to see us. There was a clear connection between her and the audience, who were pin-drop quiet and hung on every note. In addition to great first single “The Barrel,” the Designer songs that made the strongest impression on me were “Zoo Eyes,” where her voice goes from a husky lows to elfin highs within a verse, and the sad, delicate “Treasure” that mov- ingly had all the band members singing at one point. The most affecting song, though, was “Heaven is Empty,” which was mostly just Aldous and her guitar and was a real destroyer. She finished her main set with “Blend” from 2017’s Party (the only older song of the night), but then came back for an encore, opening with a flat-out amazing, ethereal cover of ’s classic “Right Down the Line.” She then played a brand new song, “Old Peel,” that is not on Designer. For that, Aldous was using a Rough Trade mug she swiped from the store as a cowbell (“I will put it back!”) while Gwion Llewelyn was using a maraca as a drumstick for extra shake appeal. The maraca shattered on him at the song’s climax, sending a giant cloud of dust into the air. You couldn’t have planned a better finish for a perfect evening.” - Brooklyn Vegan, April 9 2019 Coming up... 4/22: Meiko “Gimme Gimme”... 4/29: Allman Brown “Shapes In The Sun,” Joanne Shaw Taylor “The Best Thing,” Duff McKagan “Chip Away (w/Shooter Jennings)” RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 4/10/2019
