There is some precedent for this. But they’re thinking big this time. J is accurately sculpted right down to the big ole glasses, rockin’ riff grip, and signature silver mane that features REAL DOLL HAIR — a first for Aggronautix! Barriers are being broken here, people. I would still rather have any of these , honestly (#16 is the best). Like 53 people like this. • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

  • Playlist in 1969, Yale University Admitted Its First Women Undergraduates, Thus Ending 268 Years As an All-Male College
YALE NEEDS WOMEN Playlist In 1969, Yale University admitted its first women undergraduates, thus ending 268 years as an all-male college. Yale Needs Women (Sourcebooks, 2019) tells their story. Here is the playlist to go with it: 22 songs released between 1969 and 1972, plus a two-song prelude from 1967. A quick scan will show that male performers outnumber women on this playlist, perhaps an odd choice given the Yale Needs Women title. It’s a reflection of the times, however. The music industry needed women too. You can find this playlist on Spotify. Search anne.g.perkins, or use this link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4aXLc1veNkKCMqCWd0biKE To find out more about Yale Needs Women and the first women undergraduates at Yale, go to yaleneedswomen.com. Many thanks to Rick High, Lily and Mac Perkins-High, and David and Ginger Kendall for their help in creating this playlist. Sources for the liner notes below are at the end. PRELUDE: 1967 1. Aretha Franklin, RESPECT. Aretha Franklin was the first woman ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and “Respect” was her first song to hit #1. She was twenty-five years old, six years into an abusive marriage that she would end in 1969, a black woman in a nation where that status meant double discrimination. “All I’m askin’ is for a little respect.” 2. Country Joe and The Fish, I-FEEL-LIKE-I’M-FIXIN’-TO-DIE RAG. Released in November 1967, the I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag became one of the country’s most popular Vietnam War protest songs, particularly after its performance at Woodstock in August 1969.

(Roy Rochlin/Getty Images) (R) Presenter David Letterman speaks onstage at the 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony at Barclays Center on Apr. 7, 2017 in New York City. (Mike Coppola/Getty Images) Kanye West taped an interview for talk show host David Letterman’s Netflix series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman,” it has been revealed. Vulture reported the news, although Netflix has not confirmed the interview. Vulture found anecdotes of the interview on social media. The Kanye West episode seems to have been taped at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, according to evidence put together by Vulture. Kim Kardashian West was also there. 1/3 Season one of Letterman’s new series debuted in January 2018, with Letterman interviewing high profile personalities. There is also a bonus episode with comedian Jerry Seinfeld taking on the role of interviewer and asking Letterman questions. The series has an 83 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Kanye West will likely to be one of the guests for season two. Vulture reported that Letterman has taped at least one other episode for the season. Netflix announced earlier that Letterman would be making a season two but did not say when it would be available for viewing.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS AND SCIENCES IDENTITY AND HIP-HOP: AN ANALYSIS OF EGO-FUNCTION IN THE COLLEGE DROPOUT AND THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL LAURA KASTNER SPRING 2017 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts & Sciences and Statistics with honors in Communication Arts & Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Anne Demo Assistant Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Senior Lecturer of Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT In this thesis, I will be analyzing how Kanye West and Lauryn Hill create identity for themselves and their listeners in the albums The College Dropout and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, respectively. Identity creation will be analyzed using Richard Gregg’s concept of ego-function. By applying the three stages of the theory – victimization of the ego, demonization of the enemy, and reaffirmation of the ego – to both albums, I hope to uncover the ways that both West and Hill contribute to identity creation. I also discuss the ways in which they create identity that cannot be explained by ego-function theory. I also briefly address the following questions: (1) How does the language of ego-function differ between the artists? (2) How does their music speak to listeners of different ethnicities? (3) What role does gender play in ego-function? Does the language of ego-function differ between genders? ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgements ………………………………………………………………......iii Chapter 1 Introduction ................................................................................................. 1 Kanye West: The Jerk and the Genius ............................................................................

  • Conclusion: Popular Music, Aesthetic Value, and Materiality
CONCLUSION: POPULAR MUSIC, AESTHETIC VALUE, AND MATERIALITY Popular music has been accused of being formulaic, homogeneous, man- ufactured, trite, vulgar, trivial, ephemeral, and so on. These condemna- tions have roots in aspects of the Western aesthetic tradition, especially its modernist and expressivist branches, according to which great art innovates, breaks and re-makes the rules, expresses the artist’s personal vision or unique emotions, or all these. Popular music has its defenders. But they have tended to appeal to the same inherited aesthetic criteria, defending some branches of popular music at the expense of others― valorising its artistic, expressive, innovative, or authentic branches against mere ‘pop’. These evaluations are problematic, because they presuppose all along a set of criteria that are slanted against the popular fi eld. We therefore need new frameworks for the evaluation of popular music. These frameworks need to enable us to evaluate pieces of popular music by the standards proper to this particular cultural form―to judge how well these pieces work as popular music, not how successfully they rise above the popular condition. To devise such frameworks we need an account of popular music’s standard features and of the further organising qualities and typical val- ues to which these features give rise. Popular music normally has four layers of sound―melody, chords, bass, and percussion―and each layer is normally made up of repetitions of short elements, these repeti- tions being aligned temporally with one another, with whole sections of repeated material then being repeated in turn to constitute song sections. © The Author(s) 2016 249 A.

  • The Spotify Top 200 Through a Point Process Lens
Analyzing the Spotify Top 200 Through a Point Process Lens Michelangelo Harris, Brian Liu, Cean Park, Ravi Ramireddy, Gloria Ren, Max Ren, Shangdi Yu, Andrew Daw, and Jamol Pender∗ School of Operations Research & Information Engineering Cornell University, Ithaca, NY October 4, 2019 Abstract Every generation throws a hero up the pop charts. For the current generation, one of the most relevant pop charts is the Spotify Top 200. Spotify is the world's largest music streaming service and the Top 200 is a daily list of the platform's 200 most streamed songs. In this paper, we analyze a data set collected from over 20 months of these rankings. Via exploratory data analysis, we investigate the popularity, rarity, and longevity of songs on the Top 200 and we construct a stochastic process model for the daily streaming counts that draws upon ideas from stochastic intensity point processes and marked point processes. Using the parameters of this model as estimated from the Top 200 data, we apply a clustering algorithm to identify songs with similar features and performance. Keywords: Spotify, Music Streaming, Data Analytics, Stochastic Processes, Generalized Pois- son Processes, Marked Point Processes, Hawkes Process, k-Means Clustering 1 Introduction arXiv:1910.01445v1 [cs.SI] 9 Sep 2019 Streaming music, or more accurately streaming audio, is a way of delivering sound without requir- ing you to download files from the internet. Spotify is the world's largest music streaming service, currently available as both desktop and mobile applications. Spotify provides free streaming of music to its users, with an option for a paid premium membership with added benefits such as no advertisements and the ability to listen to music offline.
