Knowledge of their morphological and biological features and a correct taxonomical ranging serve a base for successful use of germplasm in modern breeding. List of morphological descriptors consists of 65 descriptors and 20 of them are elucidated by figures. It provides a tool for Cucumis species determination and characterization and for a discrimination of an infraspecific variation. Obtained data can be used for description of genetic resources and also for research purposes. Chayote (Sechium edule): a review of nutritional composition, bioactivities and potential applications Corresponding author: E-mail address: [email protected] (Elsa F. Vieira). Tel: +351-228340500 | ext. 1286. ABSTRACT Chayote (Sechium edule) has gained widespread consuming acceptance and recognized by its nutritional and bio-functional properties. The present review surveys and describes the current findings about the nutritional, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of chayote and identifies opportunities for further research. It also discusses chayote’s versatile utility in nutrition, as a functional ingredient in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in nanotechnology and biotechnological processes. It was concluded that although the pharmacological properties of chayote are currently well-established, only a few reports have been conducted on the isolation and identification of individual chemical constituents, and similarly, only a few in vivo studies have been conducted to assess their biological efficacy. In addition, the valorisation of the underutilized chayote by-products can be an important aspect in waste management from both economic and environmental standpoints. Thus, the recovery and utilization of valuable compounds from chayote is an important challenge for scientists. Keywords: chayote, bioactive compounds, health-benefits, valorisation. 1 1. Introduction Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz is a herbaceous perennial climbing plant with tendrils and tuberous roots, cultivated since pre-Colombian times in Mexico (Cadena-Iñiguez et al., 2007). The edible fruit is popularly known as chayote, christophene, vegetable pear, mirliton, merleton choko (in Australia and New Zealand), starprecianté, citrayota, citrayote (Ecuador and Colombia), chuchu (Brazil), machucha, caiota, pipinela (Portugal), chow chow (India), cho cho (Jamaica), Sayote (Philippines), güisquil (Guatemala, El Salvador), pear squash or iskus (Nepal) (Bermejo & León, 1994; Lim, 2012). -

Abstract The Sechium P. Br. genus composed of 11 species, which originated from the mountainous regions of Mesoamerica, have been domes- ticated and diversified. These species are clustered in two large groups: the Mexican clade and the Central American clade. Morphological and molecular studies have shown that species of the Mexican clade are formed through interspecific hybridizations and genetic flow, with the exception of S. mexicanum, which is strongly linked to the genus Sicyos. The objective of this review was to analyze the phylogenetics of Sechium based on morphological and molecular studies, which contributed to taxonomic knowledge and utilization, thereby favoring its conservation and improvement. The Central American clade is well supported with molecular data, but not so with morphological data. The species in this clade were geographically isolated and endemic. S. edule and S. tacaco are exploited species in the agricultural and industrial sectors, and both have an extensive genetic and phenotypic diversity that has allowed them to diversify and expand into different ecological niches. -

CAPITULO 3 HELMINTOS PARÁSITOS DE PECES (PLATYHELMINTHES, ACANTHOCEPHALA Y NEMATODA) Guillermo Salgado Maldonado Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Introducción Reconocemos como helmintos a los gusanos parásitos de los phyla Platyhelminthes (Clases Trematoda, Monogenoidea y Cestoda), Acanthocephala y Nematoda. Cada grupo presenta características biológicas distintivas. Los platelmintos son los gusanos planos, generalmente de tamaño pequeño. Los tremátodos se distinguen por su forma foliosa y la presencia de ventosas para fijarse a los tejidos del hospedero. Los monogéneos son más pequeños, y los céstodos tienen el cuerpo estrobilado como las “solitarias” (“tenias”) del hombre. Los acantocéfalos son gusanos que presentan una proboscis armada de ganchos en su extremo anterior con la cual se fijan a la mucosa intestinal de sus hospederos. En tanto que los nemátodos son cilíndricos de extremos afilados, cubiertos por una cutícula muy resistente. Las descripciones morfológicas y la biología de estos grupos puede consultarse en la biliografía (Lamothe-Argumedo, 1983; Schmidt y Roberts, 1989; Bush et al. 2001). Biología Los monogéneos son ectoparásitos, sobre la piel, las aletas, las branquias o los nostrilos de los peces y en la vejiga urinaria de anfibios. Otras especies de helmintos parasitan los ojos, el cerebro, la cavidad del cuerpo, la grasa, mesenterios, riñones, hígado, pulmones, musculatura, sangre o huesos de todos los grupos de vertebrados. Si bien, los parásitos intestinales son los más evidentes, cualquier órgano puede albergar helmintos. Las formas de infección son también muy diversas. Los monogéneos tienen ciclos de vida directos, algunos de ellos son incluso vivíparos, y la infección es de pez a 1 pez. -

All the monogeneans registered are associated with 363 vertebrate host taxa, and distributed in 498 localities pertaining to 29 of the 32 states of the Mexican Republic. The checklist contains updated information on their hosts, habitat, and distributional records. We revise the species list according to current schemes of KEY WORDS classification for the group. The checklist also included the published records in the last 11 years, Platyhelminthes, Mexico, since the latest list was made in 2006. We also included taxon mentioned in thesis and informal distribution, literature. As a result of our review, numerous records presented in the list published in 2006 were Actinopterygii, modified since inaccuracies and incomplete data were identified. Even though the inventory of the Elasmobranchii, Anura, monogenean fauna occurring in Mexican vertebrates is far from complete, the data contained in our Testudines. -

OVERSTREET GulfCoast Research Laboratory, Ocean Springs, Mississippi 39564 ABSTRACT About 3,000 specimens of the spotted seatrout from Mississippi Sound and adjacent water grouped by males and females had a nearly identical standard length (SL) versus total length (TL) relationship, although the equation for males in winter differed from that for those in other seasons. When investigating the SL-weight relationship, some differences occurred both among seasons and between sexes. Therefore, condition coefficients (K) were calculated to compare male and female groups according to their length and state of maturation on a seasonal basis. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) tended to increase with fish length, with relatively high values occurring in winter compared to low ones in summer when livers exhibited an abundance of lipid. -

Para el análisis histoquímico, se utilizaron reactivos es- pecíficos para los metabolitos objetivo. A través del análisis realiza- do se identificaron estructuras anatómicas para la correcta identifi- cación de la especie estudiada. La histoquímica mostró la presen- cia de alcaloides, triterpenos y esteroides, compuestos lipofílicos y lignina. Esta información sobre la localización de los compuestos no tiene precedentes. Así, el trabajo amplía el conocimiento sobre la especie y la familia Cucurbitaceae. Palabras clave: Chuchu, Chayote, Cucurbitaceae, Farmacobotánica, Microscopía. Abstract Sechium edule (Jacq.) ABSTRACT This paper assesses the community of parasites in the Peruvian weakfish Cynoscion analis (Jenyns, 1842) in the Eastern Pacific during 2014. The study was conducted on 40 specimens of C. analis acquired in the Fishing Terminal of Villa Maria del Triunfo, Lima, Peru. A search for metazoan parasites was performed following standard parasitological protocols. Six parasites were found: three species of Monogenea Cynoscionicola cynoscioni Tantaleán, Martínez & Escalante, 1987; Neoheterobothrium cynoscioni (MacCallum, 1917) Llewellyn, 1941 and Diplectanum sp. Monticelli, 1903; Procamallanus sp. Baylis, 1923 (Nematoda); Corynosoma obtuscens Lincicome, 1943 (Acanthocephala) and Lernanthropus paralonchuri Luque, Bruno & Covarrubia, 1989 (Copepoda). The dominant parasite was Diplectanum sp. The total length of C. analis was linearly and positively related to the prevalence and abundance of C. -

A la fecha se han descrito 131 especies; sin embargo, más de la mitad han sido transferidos a otros géneros y varios otros tienen descripciones deficientes, por lo tanto menos de la mitad de las especies descritas podrían considerarse válidas. En Chile, se han reconocido dos especies de Microcotyle y existen registros de especímenes no identificados en varios peces costeros, pero que aún no han sido debidamente identificados. En este estudio se describe taxonómicamente, en base a datos morfológicos y moleculares (genes ITS2 y 18S), dos especies de Microcotyle encontrados en peces intermareales de la zona central (33°S) y centro-sur (36°S) de Chile: Microcotyle sprostonae n. sp. (principalmente de Scartichthys viridis en el norte y centro de Chile) y M.
