Einleitung 1.1 Vorwort In den zwölf Jahren der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur, die von 1933 bis 1945 andauerte, verfassten Schriftsteller, die von den Machthabern protegiert wurden, Werke, welche der Verherrlichung, Stabilisierung und Ausdehnung des Regimes förderlich sein sollten. 1 In der vorliegenden Studie beabsichtige ich paradigma- tisch die Karriere des „prominenten nationalsozialistischen“ 2 Dichters und Kul- turpolitikers Gerhard Schumann darzustellen, um damit einen Beitrag zur Erfor- schung der Literatur des Nationalsozialismus zu leisten. Sein literarisches Werk lässt sich als eine weitgehend kritiklose, lyrische „Spiegelung des Dritten Rei- ches“ 3 und seiner politischen Tätigkeit charakterisieren. Schumann, welcher der „traditionell idealistischen Kunstdoktrin des 19. Jahrhun- derts“ 4 folgte, portraitierte und verherrlichte in seiner Lyrik Hitler und den Natio- nalsozialismus. 5 Er trug mit seinem nationalsozialistischen Werk das System Hit- lers und der NSDAP mit, das eine „spezifische neue Kombination von techni- schen, ökonomischen, monetären und soziopolitischen Faktoren“ darstellte und zu „Exzessen wie totaler Informationslenkung, hochindustrialisiertem Sklavenarbei- tertum und Genozid“ führte. 6 Gerhard Schumann - geboren am 14.2.1911 in Esslingen am Neckar und ge- storben am 29.7.1995 in Bodman am Bodensee 7 - muss als überzeugter National- 1 Vgl. Der Dichter war Inhaber verschiedenster bedeutender Ämter in der Kulturszene des NS-Regimes. Joseph Wulf bezeichnet Schumann als >>Hitlerverehrer<<, der zunächst als SA-Mann „eine echte NS-Karriere“ 8 durch- lief, sich 1939 freiwillig für den Krieg meldete und 1944 freiwillig der Waffen-SS beitrat. Zeitgenossen charakterisierten Gerhard Schumanns Lyrik als echte politi- sche Lyrik des Nationalsozialismus. 9 Als Kind eines Lehrers in Esslingen aufgewachsen, schloss Schumann sich früh dem Wandervogel an, einer Gruppierung der Jugendbewegung. 1930 nahm er das Studium in den Fächern Germanistik, Geschichte, Philosophie und Anglistik in Tübingen auf und trat schon bald der NSDAP, der SA sowie dem NS-Stu- dentenbund bei. Er machte ohne Studienabschluss Karriere in der NS-Bürokratie und bekleidete ab 1935 Ämter in der Reichsschrifttumskammer und im Reichskul- tursenat. 1936 erhielt er den Nationalen Buchpreis.10 Anfang der 30er Jahre schrieb er als Mitglied der jungen Mannschaft , der Autoren wie Herbert Böhme, Heinrich Anacker, Herybert Menzel,

Smith ©2008 Elana Passman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ELANA PASSMAN The Cultivation of Friendship: French and German Cultural Cooperation, 1925-1954 (under the direction of Donald M. Reid) Through a series of case studies of French-German friendship societies, this dissertation investigates the ways in which activists in France and Germany battled the dominant strains of nationalism to overcome their traditional antagonism. It asks how the Germans and the French recast their relationship as “hereditary enemies” to enable them to become partners at the heart of today’s Europe. Looking to the transformative power of civic activism, it examines how journalists, intellectuals, students, industrialists, and priests developed associations and lobbying groups to reconfigure the French-German dynamic through cultural exchanges, bilingual or binational journals, conferences, lectures, exhibits, and charitable ventures. As a study of transnational cultural relations, this dissertation focuses on individual mediators along with the networks and institutions they developed; it also explores the history of the idea of cooperation. Attempts at rapprochement in the interwar period proved remarkably resilient in the face of the prevalent nationalist spirit. While failing to override hostilities and sustain peace, the campaign for cooperation adopted a new face in the misguided shape of collaborationism during the Second World War.

Wahlperiode 08. 08. 94 Antwort der Bundesregierung auf die Kleine Anfrage der Abgeordneten Ulla Jelpke und der Gruppe der PDS/Linke Liste — Drucksache 12/8042 — Das „Ostpreußenblatt" und der Rechtsextremismus (II) In einer Kleinen Anfrage zum „Ostpreußenblatt" und dem Rechtsextre- mismus vom Mai 1991 hatte die Gruppe der PDS/Linke Liste darauf hingewiesen, — daß in dieser Zeitung rechtsextreme Autoren wie Gerd-Klaus Kalten- brunner, Emil Schlee, Hendrik van Bergh, Martin Jenke, u. v. m. publizieren können, — daß in dieser Zeitung für rechtsextreme Bücher von Autoren wie Adolf von Thadden, Pierre Krebs, Richard W. Eichler, Max Klüver, Dietmar Munier, Emil Schlee, Eckhart Knaul, Alain de Benoist, Hamilton Fish, Michael Bolle, Herbert Taege, H.-D. Sander, Michael Braga (alias Hans-Michael Fiedler) u. v. m. geworben wird. Die Bundesregierung hatte in ihrer Antwort vom 27. Juni 1991 diese aufgeführten Fakten als „Unterstellungen" zurückgewiesen. Auf dieser Beurteilung basierend hat die Bundesregierung festgestellt, daß ihr „keine Informationen" vorliegen, nach denen im „Ostpreußenblatt" für rechtsextreme Bücher geworben wird. „Anhaltspunkte für Bestrebun- gen im Sinne der §§ 3, 4 BVerfSchG" waren der Bundesregierung nicht bekannt (Antwort der Bundesregierung auf die Kleine Anfrage der Abgeordneten Ulla Jelpe und der Gruppe der PDS/Linke Liste, „Rechts- extremismus und das Publikationsorgan ,Ostpreußenblatt"', Drucksache 12/864). Inwieweit es sich hierbei tatsächlich um „Unterstellungen" handelt, wurde von der Bundesregierung nicht belegt. Ferner wurde auch nicht belegt, daß die Gruppe der PDS/Linke Liste falsche Fakten vorgetragen hätte. Tatsache ist, daß im Schutze der behaupteten „Unterstellungen" die Bundesregierung dem „Ostpreußenblatt" vorerst weiterhin eine Förde- rung aus Mitteln des Bundeshaushaltes gewährte und eine Prüfung über eventuelle rechtsextreme Bestrebungen unterließ.

    Empire and National Character: British Imperialism in Books from the “Third Reich” Victoria Jane Stiles, MA, MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the variety of representations and rhetorical deployments of the theme of British Imperialism within books published in the “Third Reich”. The thesis considers these books not only as vehicles for particular ideas and arguments but also as consumer objects and therefore as the product of a series of compromises between the needs of a host of actors, both official and commercial. It further traces the origins of the component parts of these texts via the history of reuse of images and extracts and by identifying earlier examples of particular tropes of “Englishness” and the British Empire. British imperial history was a rich source of material for National Socialist writers and educators to draw on and lent itself to a wide variety of arguments. Britain could be, in turns, a symbol of “Nordic” strength, a civilisation in decline, a natural ally and protector of Germany, or a weak, corrupt, outdated entity, controlled by Germany’s supposed enemies. Drawing on a long tradition of comparing European colonial records, the British Empire was also used as a benchmark for Germany’s former imperial achievements, particularly in moral arguments regarding the treatment of indigenous populations. Through its focus on books, which were less ephemeral than media such as newspaper and magazine articles, radio broadcasts or newsreels, the thesis demonstrates how newer writings sought to recontextualise older material in the light of changing circumstances.
