Immers ook voor ontwikkeling geldt, zoals verwoord in het gedicht, dat: “Als je verandering wilt, zul je anders moeten denken en vooral anders moeten handelen”. Deze verandering moet leiden naar zichtbare en meetbare verbetering in de toekomst. Met de start van de decentralisatie heeft de Surinaamse centrale overheid het sein gegeven voor een vernieuwende ontwikkeling. In dit document hebben belanghebbenden van Commewijne hun droom, hun visie op ontwikkeling, voor het district verwoord. Vanuit hun locaal perspectief hebben zij knelpunten aangegeven en mogelijkheden om hun district tot een leefbaardere en veiligere leef-, woon-, en werkomgeving te vormen. Met duurzaamheid doelen we op de kwaliteit van drie dimensies van onze leefomgeving: de sociaal-culturele, de ecologische en de economische kwaliteit, kortom People, Planet & Profit. People heeft betrekking op onderwerpen als veiligheid, sociale contacten en woonklimaat. Planet gaat over milieubelasting en het landschappelijke uiterlijk van gebieden. Profit staat voor de welvaart van de burgers en het presteren van het bedrijfsleven. Samen vormen deze kwaliteiten Triple P, een indicator voor duurzaamheid. Voor Commewijne zijn het menselijke potentieel en grond als de voornaamste hulpbronnen geïdentificeerd. Activiteiten en maatregelen zijn geformuleerd om met behulp van deze hulpbronnen het district te ontwikkelen. Tegelijkertijd is aangegeven hoe deze bronnen beschermd dienen te worden, zodat ook de generaties na ons hiervan nog kunnen genieten. INTRODUCTION, SYSTEMATIC SURVEY AND PAGE REFERENCES In the first part of this work, published in 1969, I gave a general intro- duction to the Suriname marine Mollusca ; in this second part the Bivalvia and Scaphopoda are treated. The system (and frequently also the nomen- clature) of the Bivalvia are those employed in the "Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, (N) Mollusca 6, Part I, Bivalvia, Volume 1 and 2". These volumes were issued in 1969 and contain the most modern system of the Bivalvia. For the Scaphopoda the system of Thiele (1935) is used. Since I published in 1968 a preliminary list of the marine Bivalvia of Suriname, several additions and changes have been made. I am indebted to Messrs. D. J. Green, R. H. Hill and P. G. E. F. Augustinus for having provided many new coastal records for several species.

I n het navolgende zal worden getracht een inzicht te geven in de geografische mobiliteit van de bevolking van Suriname. Daar vele groepen van deze bevolking nog maar sinds enkele generaties in het land wonen en een deel van de geografische mobiliteit hierdoor bepaaild wordt, zal eerst een overzicht worden gegeven van de diverse immigratiegolven waaruit de veelkleurige bevolking van Suriname is ontstaan. Daarna zal aan de hand van een aaratal cijfers van de volks- telling 1950 een indruk worden gegeven van de geografische mobiliteit binnen Suriname van de in dat jaar getelde bevolking. Vervolgens zal worden ingegaan op het spectaculaire verschijnsel van de urbanisatie en de problemen welke zich bij de ontwikkeling van Suriname voor- doen als gevolg van de grote geografische mobiliteit van de Surinaamse bevolking. 2. De immigratie. Wanneer men in het rapport van de Volkstelling 1950 leest dat de Surinaamse bevolking (TAV deel X, biz. 6) voor 46 % uit Black- coloured (in Suriname beter 'bekend als Creolen),, voor 31,2 fo uit Hindoestanen, 17,6 % uit Indonesiers, voor 1,2 % uit Chinezen, 1,3 % uit Europeanen, 1,7 % uit Indianen en 1 % uit overige landaarden (rassen) bestaat, dan mag men hieruit de conclusie trekken dat tot voor korte tijd grote bevolkingsgroepen uit verschillende delen van de wereld Suriname zijn binnengekomen.

The strategy has the overarching goal of promoting sustainable, inclusive, and diversified growth in Suriname. Underpinning the CPS is a focus on strengthening environmental and social standards and impact management. In an effort to further harness its natural and cultural capital to generate economic opportunities, the Government of Suriname (GOS) plans to diversify economic activity through an increase in private investment. The government’s 2012-16 and 2017-21 ‘National Development Plans’ and its 2016-18 ‘Stabilization and Recovery Plan’ following the economic crisis, all highlight the need to diversify economic activity, including through an increase in private investment. The GOS has taken important steps to improve its ability to facilitate private sector growth and investment, such as the establishment of a Competitiveness Unit Suriname (CUS) in 2014 and the recent operationalization of InvestSur as the national investment promotion agency. The Suriname Competitiveness and Sector Diversification (SCSD) Project is a specific lending operation being prepared under the World Bank’s CPS to address these challenges and contribute to the National Development Plans. The development objective of SCSD is support sector governance improvements and increase competitiveness in targeted industries in Suriname, through three Project Components (PCs) of which PC 2 aims at supporting value chains and Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs).

Geijskes, then Director of the Suriname Museum, Paramaribo, visited me and asked for my help. During the years (since 1938) Dr. Geijskes had stayed in Suriname, he had collected marine Mollusca in a great number of localities, in the Holocene so called shell- ridges, as well as on the coast and in the estuaries. He was sure that his collection contained a great number of species, and that their distribution over the localities was interesting. Geijskes is not a malacologist himself and he did not have at his disposal the literature and material for comparison necessary to identify his collection. A multi-stage, stratified cluster sampling approach was used for the selection of the survey sample. The target sample size for the Suriname MICS was calculated as 9,000 households. For the calculation of the sample size, the key indicator used was the number of children younger than 5 years of age who had had diarrhoea in the past two weeks before the survey using the estimate of the last MICS3 survey. Suriname is divided into 10 districts and 62 'ressorten' by law. The 'ressorten' are subdivisions at the district level. For purposes of conducting the fieldwork during the Seventh Population and Housing Census the General Bureau of Statistics subdivided each ressort in the coastal area (lowland and savannah) into 'telblokken'. A 'telblok' also called an enumeration block, was considered to be the manageable workload for a Census enumerator for the fieldwork period of two weeks and would ideally have between 100 and 150 objects.
