ROGET'S THESAURUS OF ENGLISH WORDS AND PHRASES Notes on the automatically-generated Index to Roget's Thesaurus, 1911 edition. Introduction A true Roget's Thesaurus (as opposed to an alphabetically-listed synonym dictionary) is composed of three parts: - a hierarchical classification structure (hierarchy or "Synopsis of Categories"); - a body, which lists the Categories (whose titles are sometimes referred to as "head words" or "headings"), under which are found the groups of semantically- or conceptually-related words and phrases (also called synonyms or entries); - and an Index that lists the entries alphabetically (along with the Category titles and numbers under which the entry may be found in the body). This document contains the complete Index to the 1911 (American) edition. It was generated from the entries (synonyms, phrases and word lists) contained in the Gutenburg/MICRA free E- text thesaurus 14a (plain text version). It is larger than the original 1911 Roget's Thesaurus Index, containing all text entries (i.e. excluding numbers, special characters and parenthetical information) up to 25 characters long (91,000+ entries). Index Entries This Index lacks the intelligence found in the original hand-edited Index, where common-sense aggregations occur. For example A B C and A.B.C. are found under a single Index entry in the original Index. Also, phrases are here listed alphabetically rather than "semantically." For example, in the original Index under the Index entry home there are phrases such as be at -, at - with, bring Ð to ("be at home," "at home with," " bring home to"). In this automatically-generated Index be at home is instead listed after the entry be at cross purposes with and before the entries be at home in, and be at home with; while bring home to is listed after bring i.e. none are listed under home. This Index includes archaic and obsolete words; foreign terms; Latin quotations; and many other such entries that the average thesaurus-user would never need, and were not included in the original Index. Foreign characters such as umlaut, circumflex, grave or acute may be found to encoded using ASCII characters e.g. flambee, b=ete noire. A look-up for these codes is not provided.     ‘A Great or Notorious Liar’: Katherine Harrison and her Neighbours, Wethersfield, Connecticut, 1668 – 1670 Liam Connell (University of Melbourne) Abstract: Katherine Harrison could not have personally known anyone as feared and hated in their own home town as she was in Wethersfield. This article aims to explain how and why this was so. Although documentation is scarce for many witch trials, there are some for which much crucial information has survived, and we can reconstruct reasonably detailed accounts of what went on. The trial of Katherine Harrison of Wethersfield, Connecticut, at the end of the 1660s is one such case. An array of factors coalesced at the right time in Wethersfield for Katherine to be accused. Her self-proclaimed magical abilities, her socio- economic background, and most of all, the inter-personal and legal conflicts that she sustained with her neighbours all combined to propel this woman into a very public discussion about witchcraft in 1668-1670. The trial of Katherine Harrison was a vital moment in the development of the legal and theological responses to witchcraft in colonial New England. The outcome was the result of a lengthy process jointly negotiated between legal and religious authorities. This was the earliest documented case in which New England magistrates trying witchcraft sought and received explicit instruction from Puritan ministers on the validity of spectral evidence and the interface between folk magic and witchcraft – implications that still resonated at the more recognised Salem witch trials almost twenty-five years later. The case also reveals the social dynamics that caused much ambiguity and confusion in this early modern village about an acceptable use of the occult.

Castleberry1 Abstract In this article, I analyze the TV show Sons of Anarchy (SOA) and how the cable drama revisits and revises the American Western film genre. I survey ideological contexts and tropes that span Western mythologies like landscape and mise-en- scene to struggles for family, community, and the continuation of Native American plight. I trace connections between the show’s fictitious town setting and how the narrative inverts traditional community archetypes to reinsert a new outlaw status quo. I inspect the role of border reversal, from open expansion in Westerns to the closed-door post-globalist world of SAMCRO. I quickdraw from a number of film theory scholars as I trick shoot their critiques of Western cinema against the updated target of SOA’s fictitious Charming, CA. I reckon that this revised update of outlaw culture, gunslinger violence, and the drama’s subsequent popularity communicates a post-9/11 trauma playing out on television. Through the sage wisdom of autoethnography, I recall personal memories as an ideological travelogue for navigating the rhetoric power this drama ignites. As with postwar movements of biker history that follow World War II and Vietnam, SOA races against Western form while staying distinctly faithful.

Gerald Porter, FL, Department of English, University of Umeå, S 901 87, Sweden. This is the first full-length study in English of occupational songs. They occupy the space between rhythmic work songs and labour songs in that the occupation signifies. Occupation is a key territorial site. If the métier of the protagonist is mentioned in a ballad, it cannot be regarded as merely a piece of illustrative detail. On the contrary, it initiates a powerful series of connotations that control the narrative, while the song's specific features are drawn directly from the milieu of the performer. At the same time, occupational songs have to exist in a dialectical relationship with their milieu. On the one hand, they aspire to express the developing concerns of working people in a way that is simultaneously representational and metaphoric, and in this respect they display relative autonomy. On the other, they are subject to the mediation of the dominant or hegemonic culture for their dissemination. The discussion is song-based, concentrating on the occupation group rather than, as in several studies of recent years, the repertoire of a singer or the dynamics of a particular performance.
