AEROMANCY divination from the air and sky, particularly concentrating on cloud shapes, comets, and other phenomena not normally visible in the heavens. ALECTRYOMANCY is divination whereby a bird is allowed to pick corn grains from a circle of letters. A variation is to recite letters of the alphabet noting those at which a cock crows. ALEUROMANCY is divination using "fortune cookies"; answers to questions are rolled into balls of dough and once baked are chosen at random. -

Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen. -

In Sweden, one oracular method was a ritual known as year walk, and those who ventured on this perilous journey were known as year walkers. Success meant that the omen-seeker could acquire knowledge of the following year; it was a ritual that sought answers regarding the unbearable uncertainty of being. Year walk (or annual walk) is known in Swedish as årsgång, with regional and lexical variations: ådergång, julagång, ödegång, adergång, dödsgång, sjukyrkegång, and so on. Although the term årsgång has a southern Swedish pattern of distribution (Götaland), similar practices, as well as the same motifs in different types of folk legends, are common and can be found throughout the Nordic countries. -

Tyler CHADWELL1, Tiffany D. MARTIN2 Although Witchcraft has been traditionally thought of as mostly a feminine pursuit, Appalachian witchlore showcases many examples of breaking those gender expectations. In the tales collected by Ruth Anne Musick, Gerald Milnes, and Patrick Gainer, both genders equally demonstrate a knowledge of folk-magic practices. Following an examination of the varying tales surrounding Appalachian witchlore, similar themes emerged which can be attributed to, in part, the unique environment cultivated in the region. Commentary on gender, identity, and cultural fears as seen through the lens of the region are on display in these tales. One such example, the common fear of the outsider, is a central theme. Another cultural value of the region, a strong sense of community heightened by the helping hand of one’s neighbor, is present in these tales. Witches can gain magical control through the acquisition of possessions, often through the willingness to lend a helping hand. This article explores the ways in which Appalachian beliefs of witchcraft and magic have prevailed through the years. A current trend show’s Appalachian communities following American trends of holistic medicine and folk remedies. However, anecdotal evidence would suggest that the Appalachian community may never have stopped practicing folk magic of this kind. Malgré les tentatives du clergé de les faire passer pour les agents du Diable, leur popularité est restée intacte. Les solutions proposées par l’église Protestante — la prière, le jeune et la piété — se sont avérés impuissantes face à la multitude d’afflictions étranges et déconcertantes infestant la campagne anglaise. Bien que les diagnostiques de ces personnes rusées ont parfois conduit à des accusations de sorcellerie, leur pratique s’est souvent avérée préférable aux traitements invasifs et radicaux appliqués par les médecins gradués de l’université. La croyance populaire dans la capacité magique de guérison des devins était en partie favorisée par leur soutien par les élites. By presen ting some case studies of inquisitorial trials against astrologers, it explores the interrelation between astrological and physiognomical ideas and practices in arder to sbed some light on tbe moral dimension of tbese natural phi1osophical fields ofknowledge. During tbe early modem period, both astrology and physiognomy were regarded as tools for self-unders tanding and tbe understanding of otllers by means of interpretation of natural signs. Thus tbeir history is key for understanding the shaping ofthe boundaries between the natural and the moral realms. Este artículo está enfocado en la relación e influencia mutua entre la astrologta y otras cien cias ocultas dentro del contexto de la Nueva España del siglo diecisiete. Al discutir algu· nos procesos inquisitoriales contra astrólogos, explora la interrelación entre ciertas ideas y prácticas tanto astrológicas como fisionómicas con el objetivo de enfatizar la dimensión moral de estos campos del conocimiento pertenecientes al ámbito de la filosofía natural.
