Welcome Welcome to Carnforth High School Sixth Form. This Student Booklet is designed to help you throughout your time at Sixth Form. It contains important information about what is expected of you and what to do in different situations, but it is also a document which is likely to develop during your courses, which will be added to as your journey through the Sixth Form develops. It is important to all the staff here at Carnforth High School that your Sixth Form experience: Provides you with the teaching, learning and support you need in order to achieve the goals you set yourself Develops you as an effective independent learner Develops your life skills and personal qualities Encourages you to try new things and meet new people Prepares you for the next stage – whatever that might be Is a valuable experience in its own right Is fun Don’t worry! The gap between GCSEs and Sixth Form is manageable if you are willing to put the effort in! If it takes you a little while to adapt then stick with it. You will find that Sixth Form work builds on what you have done before and even if you are studying completely new subjects, the skills that you have learnt previously will still be important. Your teachers will treat you more like an adult than when you were in younger years, however this does also mean that teachers will expect you to be more responsible around school and Sixth Form. At Carnforth High School Sixth Form we believe it crucial to continue to work in partnership with parents/carers to ensure that all students are happy and have a successful time here. If your parents are ever unsure of the progress you are making or have any concerns relating to your Sixth Form studies, they shouldn’t hesitate to contact a member of the Sixth Form team. Sixth Form Staff Head of Sixth Form – Mrs Alexia Barnes [email protected] Year Leader (12 & 13) – Mrs Emma Fletcher [email protected] It is important to let us know if you have any concerns or any questions. Students are encouraged to discuss any problems or issues they have with their studies with either their Form Tutor or a member of the Sixth Form team. This is crucial in the first few weeks of the year, as the transition from GCSE is a big step. Any pastoral related issues should be directed to Mrs Fletcher, Year Leader in the first instance. This is excellent preparation for progression on to University and the world of work. If for any reason you are unable to attend school the above school number followed by the Sixth Form office telephone extension should be used to report an absence. This should be done on the first day of an absence. You should avoid passing messages through friends regarding non-attendance at school. In addition, if you are due to attend sessions at Morecambe Bay Academy , please also inform them by telephone. The Sixth Form operates a first day absence call to parents using the ‘Keep Kids Safe’ software. Office staff alert parents by text or phone so please check and keep the school updated with mobile phone numbers for an effective means of communication to be maintained. Wherever possible all appointments (including medical, dental etc.) should be arranged outside of school time. Leaving the premises during the school day without permission will be treated as unauthorised absence. If you feel unwell or need to leave Sixth Form during the day, please report to reception to sign out or Mrs Fletcher before leaving. Please be aware that if you are eligible for a student bursary, this will not be paid if you do not keep your attendance at the expected level. This is ideally above 96%. If the attendance of those receiving a bursary falls below 86%, payment will cease. Timings of the school day Carnforth High School: 9.00am – 3.25pm Each week you will have 4 hours of timetabled lessons time and if you are not timetabled a lesson then you are expected to undertake independent study in one of the Sixth Form study areas. Study time and independent learning is strongly encouraged with provision of two dedicated Sixth Form study rooms, an ICT suite and a small school Library area that has ICT facilities available. Morecambe Bay Academy: 8.55am – 3.05pm (Break is 11.10-11.25am, Lunch is 12.25- 1.05pm) Attendance & Punctuality We encourage our students to aim for 96% attendance. If attendance falls below 90%, it is a major cause for concern for Sixth Form staff and both students and parents/carers will be contacted by a member of the team to try and improve this and address any areas of concern. This is because we believe that it is vital you learn to develop good time management skills in preparation for the world of work. Letters will be sent home to parents/carers if attendance dips below 96%, 90%, 86%. Conversations will take place between students, parents, Form Tutors, Year Leader and Head of Sixth Form. 16-19 Bursaries The 16-19 Bursary Fund is a scheme to help young people facing financial hardship to stay in full-time education. The fund can help towards the cost of essential course related materials and transport. It is awarded on a discretionary basis so if you would like to be considered for a bursary you should complete the relevant application form during the Autumn term, available from Mrs Fletcher. In addition to this, a guaranteed bursary is available to young people in care and care leavers, young people who receive Income Support and students with disabilities in receipt of both ESA and DLA. Students should be aware that receipts may be requested to confirm purchases/usage etc. Communication with Parents/Carers If a member of school staff has concerns regarding your academic performance or issues of a personal nature affecting your school studies, these will be reported to your Form Tutor in the first instance, who will discuss these concerns with you and if necessary will then make contact with home. It is imperative that as issues arise, they are dealt with in a professional manner in order that you can continue to make progress with your studies. Equally, any concerns that parents/carers have, must in the first instance be channelled to your Form Tutor and the appropriate action taken. There are two Parents Evenings scheduled to take place during each academic year. They give an opportunity for parents/carers to meet with both form tutors and subject teaching staff.

Principal’s Message Important Dates On Tuesday, we had our Open Evening. This 2nd October: Open Morning was a fantastic evening with over 400 year 5 3rd October: Year 7/12 Settling In Evening and 6 students coming in to have a look around the school and see what Carnforth 4th October: Inset Day (School closed to High is about. Our student helpers and students) guides were a credit to the school and 18th October: Last Day of October Half Term students who gave speeches in the (Normal School Closing Time) principal’s talk were outstanding. Homework: The importance of homework is always raised when looking at the progress students make in their studies. This year, we have moved away from the homework planner to a fully online system, EPraise, which students have been using for their rewards in school. Home support with homework can be vital in helping students get into a routine of completing homework to a good standard and on time. All parents and persons with parental responsibility are able to access their own account on EPraise so they can monitor homework that is set and provide support where required. If you would like to access EPraise and are having difficulties please contact [email protected] or [email protected] 60 Year Anniversary: This Year, Carnforth High School celebrates it 60th year educating the community of Carnforth and the wider area. As part of our celebration plans, we need your help. If you are an ex-student of the school and have old school photos you would be happy to be part of our celebration display; we would really appreciate you bringing them in so we can make a copy to use.

North · Lancaster and Morecambe · Wyre · Fylde Secondary School Admissions in North Lancashire 2021 /22 This information should be read along with the website or the main booklet “Secondary School Admissions in Lancashire - Information for Parents 2021-22” APPLY ONLINE www.lancashire.gov.uk/schools The closing date for applications is Saturday 31 October 2020 www.lancashire.gov.uk/schools Definitions For Voluntary Aided, Free Schools, Foundation Schools and Academies for Admission Purposes The following terms used throughout this booklet are defined as follows, except where individual arrangements spell out a different definition. Distance The 'straight line' method of measurement only applies for admission purposes. For transport 'walking routes' are used to determine distance. Explanations of these terms can be found in the main booklet. Parents/Family Members A parent is any person who has parental responsibility or care of the child. Where admission arrangements refer to 'parent's attendance at church' it is sufficient for just one parent to attend. 'Family members' include only parents and siblings. Medical/Social/Welfare Where schools have a medical/social/welfare admission criterion then this should take into account the circumstances of the child and the family. Please note the Local Authority information in the main admissions booklet. Looked After and Previously Looked After Children The School Admissions Code [December 2014] states that within the oversubscription criteria, the highest priority must be given to looked after children and children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order). A 'looked after child' ( 1 ) or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption( 2 ) child arrangements order (residency order) ( 3 ) or special guardianship order ( 4) .
