Principal’s Message Important Dates On Tuesday, we had our Open Evening. This 2nd October: Open Morning was a fantastic evening with over 400 year 5 3rd October: Year 7/12 Settling In Evening and 6 students coming in to have a look around the school and see what Carnforth 4th October: Inset Day (School closed to High is about. Our student helpers and students) guides were a credit to the school and 18th October: Last Day of October Half Term students who gave speeches in the (Normal School Closing Time) principal’s talk were outstanding. Homework: The importance of homework is always raised when looking at the progress students make in their studies. This year, we have moved away from the homework planner to a fully online system, EPraise, which students have been using for their rewards in school. Home support with homework can be vital in helping students get into a routine of completing homework to a good standard and on time. All parents and persons with parental responsibility are able to access their own account on EPraise so they can monitor homework that is set and provide support where required. If you would like to access EPraise and are having difficulties please contact [email protected] or [email protected] 60 Year Anniversary: This Year, Carnforth High School celebrates it 60th year educating the community of Carnforth and the wider area. As part of our celebration plans, we need your help. If you are an ex-student of the school and have old school photos you would be happy to be part of our celebration display; we would really appreciate you bringing them in so we can make a copy to use. If you bring them to the school reception for the attention of Sarah Wilde then copies can be made and photos returned. Also if you or anyone you know was at Carnforth High School in its first 30 years, then we are planning a celebration event and would love for you to attend. Please contact Mrs Barnes on [email protected] or ring the school on 01524 732424 to leave your details for more information. Confidence Purpose Respect Sixth Form News: Our new Year 12 students are settling in so well and are enjoying their courses. After a few swaps, I think they are now happy with their subject choices. Year 13 are well into their courses and are making a start on their UCAS applications with Mrs Rowland's help. Our sixth form ambassadors were appointed this week and all are sporting their smart red badges! They did a sterling job representing our school at open evening this week. Abi Atkin, in Year 12, made a speech to parents/carers which was amazing. Our Year 12 emotional wellbeing champions have received training this week on stressbusting techniques and anxiety reduction methods which will help in their work with their mentoring of lower school students. Most of our champions have now been paired up with their mentees and have started getting to know them. Our visiting students from Morecambe Bay Academy for Hairdressing and our students that travel to MBA for courses have settled well. We hope they continue to enjoy their courses and experience of another Sixth Form. World Challenge Parents Information: There will be a parents information evening about the opportunity for students in Year 12 and Year 11 to take part in the World Challenge trip to Morocco. The meeting will be on the 30th of September and the time is to be confirmed. If you are interested in attending, please email Mrs Fletcher [email protected] or Mrs Barnes [email protected] for more information. MFL Film Club: After a successful start last year, the MFL department are continuing their lunchtime film club for students in year 7 and 8. Every Tuesday in MFL2, students can bring their lunch along and watch a popular film in either French or Spanish. This immersion in the language is an excellent way to develop their language skills. We hope to see you there. European Day of Languages: The MFL department are celebrating the European Day of Languages next Thursday and invite staff and students to make/bring in a cake from an European country or inspired by a European country. Last year we had lots of excellent cakes and raised a significant amount of money for Macmillan Cancer Support. So if you fancy earning the Star Baker prize (and beating Mr Bullock and his Welsh cakes) then bring your entries to the MFL department before 9am on Thursday 26th September to be judged and later sold for the Cancer Support. Stressbusting Training: 39 students attended the anxiety and stressbusting training delivered by Dr Stacey Story who is a Clinical Psychologist from Lancashire Emotional Health in Schools Service. During this training session all the students learnt about what is stress, what happens in the body when we get stressed and what we can do to help ourselves. The feedback suggests that all the students enjoyed the training and Dr Storey said our students ‘were fantastic. They really engaged with the session and asked such thoughtful and interesting questions’. School Production: Disorder in the Court: As the the red curtains on the stage open, the rehearsals have begun for our school Production Disorder in the Court debuting on the CHS stage on the 12th and 13th February 2020! Our actors have taken to the stage and have begun rehearsing the first act with students attending rehearsals and progressively bringing the characters to life. Our student and staff band are beginning rehearsing for the musical components, with Mr Ward, Miss Thompson, Mr Grieve and Mr Major leading the way. Miss Nelson has begun work on the dance routines with our student dancers, any students still interested in being a dancer in the show you have this last week to speak to Miss Nelson or Miss Barton to secure your place. Our final piece shall truly be the production of a community! Battlefield Trip - 6th - 9th October On the first weekend of October, Miss Barton and 4 students have the privilege of attending a Battlefield tour created by the Institute of Education in partnership with Poetry by Heart. The students will be travelling through France to Belgium to experience and explore World War memorials and museums. Providing a cross curricular link with English and History, the students will be able to attend high level poetry workshops with Poetry by Heart representatives linked with the war poetry they will be completing and experience the locations of key events that shaped the war that will help with their development in History. Staying in the Peace Village the student will visit multiple places from Memorial Museum Passchendaele to Mametz Wood. The students will also take part in the Ceremony of the Last Post at the Menin Gate in the daily act of remembrance in Ypres. A truly wonderful experience for all involved. Student Success: We have had some great news regarding students efforts outside of school. Firstly congratulations to Lauren Bell and Martha Sowerby who have both been selected for the Westmorland County Under 13’s Football Team. There were over 30 girls in competition for places and only 14 were selected. We would also like to say congratulations to Niamh Sanderson who over the last couple of months has been working really hard with her cheerleading and has attended some tryouts in Morecambe and also in Consett to gain a place on the Level 5 World Championships Team to compete in Florida 2020. On Wednesday Niamh received the news that she has been successful and has been offered a place on the team!!! She will therefore be competing in the World Championships next year, a huge achievement for her!! PE News: All extra-curricular clubs are up and running and there has been a brilliant turnout from pupils all week. A reminder for any pupils wanting to get involved to look at the extra-curricular timetable and attend as many clubs at both lunch time and after school. In addition to the extra- curricular timetable year 7 and 8 boys football training will begin on Tuesday, 3.30pm – 4.30pm. All pupils welcome. A very busy week of rugby fixtures started with a trip to Morecambe Bay Academy on Monday afternoon for the year 8 and year 9/10 boys. Two very competitive fixtures were played to start off the rugby season. The year 8 boys lost 40-15 but the game was a competitive affair. The Carnforth tries were scored by Tyler Singleton (2) and Oscar Stuttard. The year 9/10 boys team stormed to 45-15 victory, playing some superb rugby along the way. Well done boys. On Tuesday afternoon the year 7 boys played their first ever rugby game against Kirkham Grammar School. Played in a magnificent setting the boys produced an outstanding first ever performance and drew the game 30-30. There were many positives for the team to build on for the upcoming season. Dan Maguire scored five tries in a player of the match performance, Ryan Woolworth scored the 6th try. Well done boys. On Wednesday the year 11 game away to Standish was postponed due to an accident on the M6 and the team being unable to travel to the fixture. This will be rearranged. The year 8 boys hosted Casterton in an extremely tough game, credit to Casterton who were an outstanding team and moved the ball with great speed. The final score was 40- 0. On Thursday the year 9 boys hosted Westholme in the Lancashire cup.
