Dear Parent/Person with Parental Responsibility, We understand the importance of clear home school communication during this time. We are aiming to keep as much information as possible updated on our website. However, each week we will be collating all relevant information into a weekly update letter. We hope the following information helps keep you informed with the current school situation. Morecambe Bay Academy Sixth Form Taster Day Several year 11 students from Carnforth took part in the Virtual Taster Day run by Morecambe Bay Academy on Wednesday. The event was very successful and informative. The teachers at Morecambe all commented on how focused, engaged, and enthusiastic our students were. Morecambe Bay Academy Sixth Form has a strong community feel and works hard to prepare students for their next steps. If you have not already looked at their Virtual Open Event (mbasixthform.theschooltour.co.uk) then I would recommend it. They have a good range of both academic A Levels and Vocational courses. Application forms can be downloaded from either their school website or the Virtual Open Event. The deadline for this is Friday 5th February. Literacy Corner This week’s literacy challenge is to try to think of as many words as possible that contain the word root ‘port’. Definition: carry. Example: Portable- able to be carried around. This week’s ‘word of the week’ is ‘innovate’. (To introduce changes and new ideas) Mr Grieve Absence in English One of our English teachers, Mr. Grieve, will not be able to deliver live lessons for the next two weeks. To ensure that his students still receive the best learning experience, with live starters and plenaries from an expert teacher, they will be joining a different English class over this time. They should have been informed of this already. The classes that will be affected are: • 11X1 English will join 11X2’s English lesson (this also means they will have an English lesson on Monday P4 rather than a Life lesson.) • 9X3 English will join 9X4’s English lessons. • 8X4 English will join 8X3’s English lessons. • 7X2 will join 7X1’s English lessons. We are asking students to think about things that they are looking forward to doing again once lockdown is over. Examples might be seeing grandparents, going to the cinema, going shopping, playing team sports, or going out for a meal at a restaurant. Once they have thought of something (or a whole range of things) they’re looking forward to they can create something like a poem, a piece of art, a PowerPoint slide, a piece of writing, etc. all about it. Anything creative is fine! They can then send their entry as an email attachment with the file or a photograph of what they created to this email address: [email protected]. The deadline for entries is Friday 8th February. Winners and prizes will be announced after that, with winning entries being displayed on the school website. Year 10 Parents’ Evening and Year 11 Careers Advice Meetings We will be holding our Year 10 parents evening virtually this year on SchoolCloud. This is a video meeting system which allows you to discuss how your child is progressing and ways to support them with home learning and upon their return to school. The evening will be on Tuesday 9th of February from 4:30pm to 7pm. We will be doing all subjects on the same evening to reduce time pressures on families. Ms. Parr, our careers office, is offering online meetings with Year 11 students to discuss next steps in education, apprenticeships, and employment. These will also be available via SchoolCloud. The meetings are available on Thursday 4th and 11th of February from 12pm to 6pm. At the end of the newsletter, there is a guide for Year 10 and 11 parents on how to sign up to SchoolCloud system to start booking appointments. This guide has also been emailed out to all families as well. Please be aware that the SchoolCloud system is sensitive to titles (e.g., Mrs., Ms., Miss) as well as specific email addresses. If there are any issues with signing up, please email Mr. Bullock at [email protected] Reporting on Student Attendance and Work Completion As part of our recent parent/carer survey, several families asked if there was a way of knowing how often their children are attending live lessons and whether they are handing in the work they are asked for. We have created two new systems to help families to support their children in relation to these areas. Attendance From this week onwards, we will be sending out text messages to parents each week with an update on your child’s attendance on Teams. This will be a general message to inform you whether your child has been attending most of their live lesson opportunities or not. We are aware that different parents are taking different approaches to remote learning, including some families who are not using Teams frequently or at all for a variety of reasons, so please see these texts as a way of keeping you informed. They are not to be seen as a sanction from the school. Work Completion As with normal teaching, teachers will not mark every piece of work completed by students. The ‘day to day’ work carried out by students builds their knowledge and skills over time and is assessed regularly by key summative pieces, such as assessments. These assessments are continuing over remote learning. Different departments may use different systems for setting these assessments and providing feedback, however many will use Epraise for this purpose. From now on, if a student fails to hand it a key piece of work that is due via Epraise, teachers will be able to note this as a ‘demerit’ within the Epraise system. Parents/carers can log in to Epraise and see these demerits (with some detail provided), as well as seeing their child’s timetable, work that has been set, completed, is due, etc. Please see these notifications are a way of keeping you informed. They are not to be seen as a sanction from the school. If you are unsure how to access your parent Epraise account, please look at the ‘How to Access Epraise for Parents and Carers’ guide that will be placed on the Remote Learning area of the school website early this week. Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Award We are very pleased to say that we have had an excellent response to the remote delivery of the year 9 D of E award. If you child hasn't done so already, please encourage them to access www.edofe.org and register their account. Mr Stamp will continue to deliver a live Teams lessons each Friday (P5) to set activities and help students record their progress. Students have been sent login details to their school email account and a step-by-step tutorial is available on Epraise to help with the registration process. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience a variety of activities from outside of the normal curriculum. Please contact Mr Stamp [email protected] if you have any questions or require support. Testing In line with the latest government guidance, we will be placing a pause on the LFT tests for students. Thank you to all the parents/carers that completed the consent and supported us in allowing testing to be undertaken. As soon as we have any more information or there is a planned resumption in testing, we will inform you as soon as possible. Mental Health Please see the link to a recording for the Mental Health Family Hour, which focuses on young people’s mental health. This live stream was incredibly popular when it went live. It is really gaining momentum now and people are watching from all over the U.K and internationally. The focus of this episode was young people’s mental health, spoken about in this episode was anxiety, lack of motivation to do any work and the fear of losing someone to COVID-19. Here is the link for you to watch and share - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v8aGkxdjcA&feature=youtu.be This is beneficial for both the young people and parents. Talked about are things from both perspectives.
