1 WHAT IS THE BIG “L” CLUB? The Big “L” Club was established in 1958 and was formed by a group of dedicated supporters to become the of cial sports booster of LHS. The Club’s primary purpose is to support the Lancer Athletic Program while boosting morale. The athletic program now  elds more than 60 teams at the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman levels.

The Big “L” Club supports the Athletic Program throughout the entire year sponsoring the Fall, Winter, and Spring Awards nights presenting award plaques to the athletes who have received outstanding recognition at the conference, county, and state levels.

The Big “L” Club continues to induct into the Hall of Fame, honoring the recipients at a Hall of Fame Brunch in October. Each year in May, our senior athletes look forward to participating in our Lancers on Parade Fundraiser, where our very own LHS student athletes get to showcase out ts and enjoy food donated from local vendors. It is truly an inspiring night for our community to come together as local businesses, restaurants, and clothing vendors embrace Livingston’s  nest, making it a special night for our seniors. In June, as the school year comes to a close, The Big ”L” hosts a Pep Rally for the entire senior class where the LHS male and female athlete of the year is announced, and we honor all of our senior athletes, cheerleaders and band members. At the Pep Rally we provide a motivational speaker to motivate the senior class and also announce our gift of the year to the Livingston Athletic Department.

The Big “L” Club also contributes time and funds to a variety of projects to bene t Livingston High School athletes and the student body at large. In the past, we have gifted exercise equipment for the  tness and wellness center, helped purchase the softball scoreboard and golf cart for our LHS sports trainers, donated a Hall of Fame Wall which proudly presents all of our time honored athletes in the wellness center. The Big L provided video cameras and software for all of our LHS coaches and teams to use for instructional purposes as well as two portable speakers and a tunnel of success were donated for all teams to use for their big games. To boost the spirit of LHS, The Big L Club has purchased a mascot, Sir Lawrence the Lancer. Sir Lawrence attends various school and sporting events throughout the year. Most recently, a portable scoreboard, a donation to the baseball dugouts, and The Big L Snack Shop were donated. The Snack Shop will provide FREE snacks to all our in-season athletes so they can refuel after school, before a game, or practice.

The Big “L” Club gives our community a reason to come together to participate and cheer for our LHS sports teams. Thank you for your support, as The Big “L” Club will continue to dedicate ourselves to honor tradition and continue to enhancing our athletic program.

6 DEDICATION

Big L Club Dedicates 2017 Fall Sports Journal To: Bobby Breschard

Bobby Breschard just completed his 21st year as a teacher at Livingston High School, and his 22nd season as a high school coach. In the classroom and on the athletic  elds, “Coach B” as he is respectfully called by his students and athletes, has established himself as a well-respected mem- ber of the Livingston High School community.

As a teacher, Coach B is a valued member of the physi- cal education department. In that role, he has taught on both the elementary and high school levels and has had a tremendous impact on his students. Outside of the lines of football, Coach B has been an in uential role model for the student-athletes in regards to getting them to understand the importance of academics in their future.

Last year as a new member of the New Jersey Super Foot- ball Conference, Coach Breschard led the team to a 5 – 5 record in one of the toughest public school conferences in the state of New Jersey. This successful season came together through the hard work of all of the players and coaches who serve under Coach B’s leadership.

In addition to being a successful coach and teacher at the High School, Coach B has stepped up to lead the Student Big L Club, which was formed to promote school spirit within the Lancer athletic de- partment. In this role, Coach B has volunteered countless hours to support Lancer athletics. In his time away from being a coach and teacher, Coach Breschard is actively involved with both his son Bobby and daughter Emma, and still makes time for his supportive wife Vanessa, who can be seen cheering the Lancers on at all of the games.

Congratulations to Coach Breschard for your contributions as a teacher and coach to Livingston High School and best of luck for many years of future success.

13 FOOTBALL Th e 2017 Livingston Lancer football team will be entering the year with some veteran returning players and some new faces. Th e returners will be called upon to provide leadership to build off last year’s season. With explosive and skilled players and a solid off ensive line, the off ense looks to continue to put pressure on opponents with a high-tempo, no huddle off ense. Th e defense this year is extremely fast and fl ies to the ball carrier. Th e team has put in tremendous work in the summer and through the work in a tough football camp. With opening day against Randolph on September 1st quickly approaching the Lancers are excited for the challenge ahead. FOOTBALL COACHES

35 BOY’S CROSS COUNTRY The 2017 Cross Country season promises to be a very exciting one on the boy’s side with a mix of experienced and inexperienced runners. The Lancers will be led by a strong senior class of runners. Senior varsity returnees Daniel Cao, Max Nunez, Eric Mooney and Raymon Yang look to build off their experiences and successes from last season and look to lead the team to victory in the season ahead. The team also welcomes back seniors Caleb Chow, Adrian Chun, Robert Chun as well as welcomes  rst time senior Johnson Feng to the team.

The team should bene t from added depth, the return of a very strong junior and sophomore class and one of the largest freshman classes in recent history. The team is looking forward to the return of Jona- than Ackerman, Jonathan Chen, Ido Kadouri, Jeremy Wong, Cristian Zapata, Andrew Brennan, Matt Leviss, Philmon Mehari and Evan Tomasco to the lineup. With 18 freshman names on the roster, the coaching staff is excited to meet and work with many new student athletes over the course of the season.

The team will be opening this season in early September at Branch Brook Park with the  rst of 4 dual meet competitions. The teams’ success this season will depend on a strong focused work ethic throughout the line-up, staying healthy and a positive cohesive team attitude that can stay focused on achieving team goals. 37 GIRL’S CROSS COUNTRY The 2017 Girls Cross Country program will shortly open their season competing in the Super Essex Conference (SEC). After a one year stint in the Liberty Division of the SEC, the girls return to the American Division to do battle with the top teams in the county. The season shows promise as the Lancers return all but one of the top 7 from last year’s squad. The team should also bene t from some new talent eager to earn a varsity spot. The coaching staff has challenging yet attainable goals for the lady lancers this season, as they look to show improvement on the Conference, County and State levels building off the 2016 season which had some bright spots and good memories. The squad will be competing in dual, invitational and championship meets on the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels. Many of the girls have been working all summer long to better their chances of obtaining the team goals. The schedule includes clashes with some of the top teams in the state which should prepare the squad for the championship season. The team should bene t from returning seniors Anna Levy and Amanda Clark along with juniors Samantha Keenan and Emily Arends who were top 7  nishers last season. Sophomore Erin Chang, who had a stellar rookie year making it to the Group 4 meet last fall, is back along with fellow sophomore Shannon O’Connor also a regular in the top 7 last season. These girls are eagerly looking forward to another season of hard racing in the woods. The addition of newcomers, sophomore Nicole Rong and freshman Katrina Leigh, should positively impact the program during the 2017 campaign as they have looked good in their summer training runs. Junior Rachel Drill, sophomores Kayla Hudson and Ririko Nakayama could also make strong contributions to the success of this season. The Lancers, while returning some strong competitors, will also be working on developing more depth and consistency throughout the lineup. This includes some returners and some new additions to the roster such as, Desiree Joseph, Carolina Lima, Jordyn Sharon, Shaney Sharon, Gabriella Rossi, Morgan Levy, Celeste Calderon, and Elizabeth Lam. A group of frosh including Carly Arends, Eliana Bershard, Samantha Lee, Gloria Liu, Ashley Pearl and Ellie Nadelman will also be looking to develop and contribute during their  rst XC season which should make this a memorable one. The squad is  nishing up its preseason summer training program laying a base for the fall training and racing schedule. The teams’ success will depend on a strong focused work ethic throughout the line-up, staying healthy, believing in each other and developing con dence in their own abilities. If everyone does their part to contribute to the team goals then the individual goals will take care of themselves. Coach Czeizinger, Coach Memory and Coach Chaudruc are all looking forward to working with the team to reach its goals and enjoy a memorable season. CROSS COUNTRY COACHES

47 BOY’S SOCCER

This season may  nd the Lancers Boys Varsity Soccer Team in a rebuild stage. Having graduated fourteen se- niors, and only returning  ve seniors, presents this year’s team with a number of question marks. Junior Brian Kelly is the only player on the roster to appear in every game last year. This year’s roster includes seniors Scott Grossman, Jesse Ma, Josh Feinberg, Jared Sakwa, and Christian Connolly. Joining junior Brian Kelly will be fellow juniors Ryan Melnick and Aria Navi, all three of these juniors will be relied on to log a large number of minutes on the  eld this year, and will also need to chip in on offense. Franco Burga another junior has been a nice surprise so far, Burga registered two goals in a scrimmage and has shown some play making ability. Defender Philippe Jallow, mid elder Chris Werner, goalkeeper Grif n Ehrich round out the junior class. A bulk of the roster this year will come from a talented sophomore class. Six of these sophomores saw extensive time last year with the varsity and they all will be battling for starting positions. Twin brothers Harrison and Zachary Berkley lead the way followed by Daniel Cho, Phillip Rodrigues, Cooper Grossman. Elijah Elster will get the starting job in goal, and Abe Rimatzki should compete for a starting spot on defense.

The team will be competing in the American Conference of the SEC, which is probably one of the top three conferences in the State of New Jersey. Teams to beat in the conference once again will be Seton Hall Prep, Essex County Champion Newark East Side, and power houses West Orange, Montclair, and Millburn. West Essex is primed for a breakout year so it’s going to be a dif cult season game in and game out with very few breaks on the schedule.

We will be looking to keep the games close, limit our opponent’s chances, and hopefully strike when given our opportunities. If we can play together as a team and work hard for eighty minutes we may be able to surprise some of the teams who are favorites to challenge for the conference title. BOY’S SOCCER COACH

54 GIRL’S SOCCER Last year’s 2016 Livingston High School Girls Soccer team will go down in the history books as one of the most successful and accomplished teams in girls soccer and LHS sports history. The team  nished with a 19-1-1 record, suffering it’s only loss in the last game of the season against Ridge HS in the Group IV semi nal. Along the way, the 2016 team won the SEC – American division title and the Essex County Tournament title without yielding a single goal! The team capped off its historic season with its third win over rival Montclair HS when it captured the North I, Group IV sectional championship. The Lady Lancers  nished the 2016 season ranked 11th in the state by NJ.com (1st in Essex County) and ranked #7 in NJ and #50 in the USA by topdrawersoccer.com.

This season, the 2017 seniors understand that the bar has been set VERY high, but they are excited to create their own legacy with a new group of players who also possess tremendous talent to bring home championships. During their four years at LHS, these nine young women have had a major impact on the girls’ soccer program, both on and off the  eld. These individuals bleed green and white and would love to add even more championship hardware to their already impressive resumes and the trophy case at LHS. Leading the way for the Lancers are seniors: Tori Belcuore (tri-captain), Christine Craitar, Nikki Eisen, Ally Levitt, Jocelyn McCauley, Tara McCormack, Hannah Oliveira, Ashley Reuter (tri-captain), and Nikki Schreiber. As team captains, Belcuore and Reuter lead by example with their skill, knowledge, and passion for the game. Craitar, Levitt, McCauley, and Oliveira will lead a new look defense that will limit opponents’ chances will also starting the team’s attack. McCormack and Reuter make up the mid eld and will look to both support the defense and start the offense. Belcuore, Eisen, and Schreiber will help to power the team’s high-powered offense and  nd the back of the net early and often. The Lancers always pride themselves on their defense, but this year it might be a potent offense that leads them to victory.

Supporting this year’s senior class is a group of highly skilled and talented juniors and sophomores. Leading the way for the junior class is Nicole Kwoczka (tri-captain) – who was a 1st team All-Conference and All-County keeper as a sophomore in 2016 (and is noted as a “player to watch” on NJ.com). Kwoczka, along with fellow juniors Jenna Cappuccino, Morgan Darrow, and Sarah Miller will bolster the “spine” of the formation and help to transition from defense to offense. 2016 all-conference mid elder Kayla Parsons, now a sophomore, will be asked  ll many different niches based upon the needs of the team (score…add depth to the mid eld…and be a shutdown defender). These talented players, along with a number of their fellow classmates and some highly skilled incoming freshmen, will compete mightily with the upperclassmen for key varsity spots in 2017.

Head coach Paul Raiz is entering his  fteenth season leading the Lady Lancers. Coach Raiz is very fortunate to have a group of very knowledgeable and dedicated assistant coaches at his side. Coach Brian Carr, now in his seventh year with the program, has completely immersed himself in all aspects of the program and again help to guide the varsity squad. In her  fth season, Coach Natalie Natale continues to help grow the freshmen team and assist with the program. Entering her  rst season back with the program, Kate Schwindel will lead the junior varsity team. Kate, the 2010 Star Ledger NJ player of the year, guided the soccer program to its  rst ever state sectional title (ultimately  nishing as Group IV runners-up) - also winning ECT and conference titles that same season. Rounding out the coaching staff is second year assistant Steven Brooks, who will provide an immense knowledge and love of the game to assist all levels of the program.

As is tradition with the girls soccer program, the 2017 varsity squad has its sights set on some very simple, yet lofty goals …winning championships! It should be another exciting year for our Lady Lancers, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. The girl’s soccer program would like to wish the best of luck to all the other sports programs. As always, the Lady Lancers appreciate all of your support and look forward to seeing you at their games.

55 Our #1 Lancer Fan

Joe Falcone was the fabric of the Township of Livingston. Wherever he would go – the pool, Seymour’s, the Post Of ce, ShopRite, LHS games – he was always warmly welcomed by all.

The Big L Club honored Joe with the Lancer #1 Fan Award for his life- time support of the Lancer athletes in 2012.

However, The Big L Club and the Livingston Community was awarded the bigger honor of having a resident named Joe Falcone.

Thanks for the memories Joey!

56 A Tribute to Joey Falcone

In honor of keeping Joey’s spirit alive, The Big L Club has created a scholarship that will be distributed annually to a student of the senior class that re ects Joey’s dedications and devotion to our Lancer sports.

64 LANCER GIRLS’ TENNIS The 2017 Livingston Girls Tennis Team looks to be a factor in Super Essex Conference, Essex County Tournament, Sectional and State Tournament competition. Senior Captains Abbie Bekov, Vivian Lin, and Pujan Neopane lead a veteran team with the addition of two talented freshmen.

For the second consecutive season the singles lineup consists of junior Nicole Bazhenov, and sophomores Emma Conforti and Brielle Schwartz. Bazhenov, Conforti, and Schwartz earned Super Essex All- Conference honors along with senior Vivian Lin and junior Alicia Li. Lin and Li were joined in the doubles lineup with Bekov, Neopane, and junior Komal Misra. Also seeing varsity action in 2016 were juniors Winnie Zhu and Harley Scherago. Juniors Nanki Ahluwalia and Samantha Klein have moved up to the varsity. Freshmen Emily Sze and Selena Zhu bring U.S. Tennis Association Tournament experience, they will make an immediate contribution to the varsity.

The team once again will play in the Super Essex Conference with state powers and defending State Champions Millburn and Newark Academy. The Lancers are anxious to win the North I, Group IV Sectional Championship for the  rst time since 2012 and the annual “September Smash” which has alluded the team since 2013. Coaches Elliot Lovi and Amanda Buyes have high expectations with a very dedicated, hard working group of players.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the season is the unveiling of the new Memorial Park Tennis Courts. The original courts were built in 1950 with two additions, the last being 1961.

The Livingston Tennis Teams would like to thank the Livingston Town Council and the Livingston Board of Education for joining together to make this one of the premier tennis facilities in New Jersey in its beautiful, natural setting. GIRL’S TENNIS COACHES
