Welcome to the 29th Annual Newark Athletic Hall of Fame (NAHF) Dinner. It’s good to gather with friends and supporters to celebrate another anniversary of this great sports institution. As a member of the Hall myself, I can tell you that it is an honor to be an inductee.

Each year, outstanding athletes are inducted into the Hall in recognition of their achievements, both here as high school students and later on in college. The money raised tonight will go to scholarships for younger Newark scholar-athletes to defray educational costs. Athletes often become community leaders, as so many of our inductees prove, and stand as role models. We appreciate the participation of past inductees in the mentoring program we initiated, which has had a positive impact on the lives of these Newark students.

Thank you for being part of our community of friends. Your participation here tonight will help make the dreams of some young scholar- athletes come true. We greatly appreciate your commitment to the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame, and look forward to seeing you next year.

Sincerely,

Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Essex County Executive

Inductees, Scholarship Recipients, Family and Friends,

It is with great honor that I welcome you tonight to our 29th Annual Newark Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner.

Since 1988, we have been honoring athletes from public and private schools in and around the City of Newark. Our initial purpose was to focus attention on Newark’s glorious past and its bright future by creating a positive environment where friendships, camaraderie and memories can be renewed. Tonight, we continue that tradition with eighteen new Inductees, a high school team and four Scholarship Awardees.

The Honorees have proven, as in the past, that they are to be recognized as true role models, a characteristic very much in need these days, whether in a large city or a small town. You can turn to a bio page in this or any one of the previous twenty-eight books of inductees and find a role model you can be proud to emulate.

The hallmarks of a good athlete are dedication, desire, teamwork, hard work, time management and good sportsmanship. These are the same qualities necessary to succeed in the classroom and the workplace. That’s why our Hall of Fame Family of Inductees are to be viewed as success stories, on and off the field.

To our Scholarship Award Winners, you have been recognized to possess the characteristics outlined above; therefore, we wish you good fortune in college and hope to see you back here one evening on the dais, as a future Inductee into the Hall of Fame.

Finally, as Newark has become a hotbed for professional and college sports alike, we must not forget the high school and recreation level athletes and support their efforts. Therefore, we continue our relationships with the teams involved and their connection with the youth of the city.

We are proud of our student athletes from the City of Newark.

Furthermore, let me thank the members of the NAHF Board, who have worked so tirelessly on making this night the success that it continues to be, and to the attendees out there who support our efforts each and every year.

Jose Barros East Side High School

I was born in Portugal. I immigrated to this great Country in February 1978 when I was 11. I attended East Side HS from 1981 to 1985. We had very successful Cross Country and Track teams under the leadership of the great Coach Ollie Dickerson. Although I did well in Cross Country, I did better as a middle distance runner. I was the runner-up in the 800 meters All Groups championship meet in 1985. This achievement earned me a full scholarship to Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Running has been a passion of mine since my freshman year in High School to this day. Because of this sport, I was able to go to college for free and maintain my fitness over that last 30+ years.

A couple of years after graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson with a Communications degree and a minor in Business, I decided to go back to school and pursue a Master’s Degree in Corporate Finance while working part-time for the Company I work for today.

After obtaining my MBA, I was offered a full time position to be an accountant. I have been promoted to various positions over the years. At the moment I am the Royalty Accounting Manager for the biggest Higher Education Company in the World, which is Pearson Education. I’ve been with this company since 1994.

I enjoy anything that has to do with the outdoors, especially running, hiking, and biking.

I have married recently to my beautiful wife, Bela Barros. I have two wonderful teenagers. Patrick Fagan Vailsburg High School

Dr. Evangeline Grover also known as Van to her Blue Devil and Charger family, has always possessed the ability to not only achieve the goals she set but to surpass them. She truly exemplifies the qualities of a global achiever. As a child, it would appear that she was motivated by her parents, coaches, and professors but the true motivation came from within Van. Van we are so proud of you.
