TO ALL President’s Message Inductees, Scholarship Recipients, Family and Friends, It is with great honor that I welcome you tonight, to our 30nd Annual Newark Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner. Since 1988, we have been honoring athletes from public and private schools in and around the City of Newark. Our initial purpose was to focus attention on Newark’s glorious past and its bright future by creating a positive environment where friendships, camaraderie and memories can be renewed. Tonight we continue that tradition with eighteen new Inductees and four Scholarship Awardees. The Honorees have proven, as in the past, that they are to be recognized as true role models, a characteristic very much in need these days, whether in a large city or a small town. You can turn to a bio page in this or any one of the previous twenty-nine books of inductees and find a role model you can be proud to emulate. The hallmarks of a good athlete are dedication, desire, teamwork, hard work, time management and good sportsmanship. These are the same qualities necessary to succeed in the classroom and the workplace. That’s why our Hall of Fame Family of Inductees are to be viewed as success stories, on and off the field. To our Scholarship Award Winners, you have been recognized to possess the characteristics outlined above; therefore, we wish you good fortune in college and hope to see you back here one evening on the dais, as a future Inductee into the Hall of Fame. Finally, as Newark has become a hotbed for professional and college sports alike, we must not forget the high school and recreation level athletes and support their efforts. Therefore, we continue our relationships with the teams involved and their connection with the youth of the city. We are proud of our student athletes from the City of Newark. Furthermore, let me thank the members of the NAHF Board, who have worked so tirelessly on making this night the success that it continues to be, and to the attendees out there who support our efforts each and every year. Allen, the “T” stands for “Teddy” as many of his respected friends, teammates and coaches refer to him. He was born and raised in Newark, NJ. Clarence began his education in Newark Public Schools, attending Cleveland Elementary School, and both Science and Central High Schools where he found his gift in baseball. Under the leadership of Coach Jerry Battigilini, he excelled as a varsity player both his Junior and Senior years. His athletic ability as a Central Blue Devil got him selected to the All City, All County, All Group and All State teams both years. As a junior, Clarence led the Blue Devils as a sleek fielding and clutch hitting First Baseman, hitting .489 batting average as a junior and .449 during his senior year. This excellence in sportsmanship and athleticism lead to him receiving a full scholarship to Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina under Coach Henry White, here he lettered all four years. During his junior year as a Saint Augustine College Falcon he earned top ten rating in several offensive and defensive categories in the weekly magazine Baseball America. He finished with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene and Safety. After which, Clarence earned an Operation Certificate in Safety in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, and then a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Jersey City University. He found his passion following the footsteps of his GODFATHER, Jerry Battiligini and became an educator and a coach. Over the past 18 years, he has demonstrated his excellence in leadership to students, staff members and parents of Newark Public Schools holding the positions of Vice Principal at George Washington Carver for 6 years and for the past 11 years as the Principal of South 17th Street Elementary School. His greatest accomplishment and his proudest moments in life are his two children, Nia Donae and Miles. Like their father, education is their passion. In May 2018, Nia earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from Tuskegee University and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at the University of Minnesota. Miles has just entered his freshman year at Burlington County Institute of Technology, where he will work hard to achieve great accolades as well. It is clear to see Clarence “Teddy” Allen has hit the ball out of the park when it comes to his success and the legacy he leaves with the students of Newark public Schools, South 17th Street Elementary School and as a father to his children. Anthony Baskerville Science/West Side HS Anthony was born September 22, 1990 to Adrienne Armstrong and Anthony Baskerville Sr. Anthony attended West Side High School his 9th grade year, before transferring to Science Park High School. During his high school career he was fortunate to lead the West Side High School Football Team to it’s only NJSIAA State Championship. Anthony was selected to numerous post season honors, including: All-State, North Jersey Section 2, Group 3; Essex County Player
