TO ALL

President’s Message

Inductees, Scholarship Recipients, Family and Friends,

It is with great honor that I welcome you tonight, to our 30nd Annual Newark Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner.

Since 1988, we have been honoring athletes from public and private schools in and around the City of Newark. Our initial purpose was to focus attention on Newark’s glorious past and its bright future by creating a positive environment where friendships, camaraderie and memories can be renewed. Tonight we continue that tradition with eighteen new Inductees and four Scholarship Awardees.

The Honorees have proven, as in the past, that they are to be recognized as true role models, a characteristic very much in need these days, whether in a large city or a small town. You can turn to a bio page in this or any one of the previous twenty-nine books of inductees and find a role model you can be proud to emulate.

The hallmarks of a good athlete are dedication, desire, teamwork, hard work, time management and good sportsmanship. These are the same qualities necessary to succeed in the classroom and the workplace. That’s why our Hall of Fame Family of Inductees are to be viewed as success stories, on and off the field.

To our Scholarship Award Winners, you have been recognized to possess the characteristics outlined above; therefore, we wish you good fortune in college and hope to see you back here one evening on the dais, as a future Inductee into the Hall of Fame.

Finally, as Newark has become a hotbed for professional and college sports alike, we must not forget the high school and recreation level athletes and support their efforts. Therefore, we continue our relationships with the teams involved and their connection with the youth of the city.

We are proud of our student athletes from the City of Newark.

Furthermore, let me thank the members of the NAHF Board, who have worked so tirelessly on making this night the success that it continues to be, and to the attendees out there who support our efforts each and every year.

Harry Snyder Class of 2005 Congratulations to the 2018 Newark Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees The following is a list of past inductees that continue to keep the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame striving for excellence in being able to give scholarships to our deserving youth. Born in Newark 1935, Ernie is a graduate of Barringer High, a graduate of Panzer College and recipient of the Phi Epsilon Kappa award for the highest men’s academic average. He subsequently studied at ’s graduate program where he wrote and earned a NJ research grant. Under the guidance of Dr. Roscoe Brown. ’69, Ernie was granted a patent t based on “Flattened Arc” baseball swing. Although most of his athletic career was limited to Track and Cross Country his sport of choice was gymnastics.

Ernie enlisted in the US Army (1957-59) which assured him the opportunity to be stationed in Germany, the birthplace of modern day gymnastics. In Germany, he initiated a variety of athletic and recreational programs for the American dependent children including 6 other American Army bases (in Bavaria) which earned him a Battalion Commendation for contributions to the quality of life of many American dependents and the local German Community.

He used these extensive educational experiences when he began teaching at Ann Street School in the Ironbound where he worked for 28 years. He developed some of the first and most innovative programs in physical education in NJ and throughout the country. Ernie received recognition for his dedication to physical education and athletics including:

1. Teacher of the Year for Newark and nomination for National USA Teacher of the Year for New Jersey 2. Creative Teacher of the Year award from Panzer University 3. Honored by the Mayor and Newark City Council twice for his dedication to the City for his programs with a day named in his honor. 4. Outstanding Community Service Award for Central Ward.

Awards aside, perhaps his biggest contribution and most prestigious achievement is the impact his teaching had on the lives of so many students. Ernie never looked at subject matter as his area of expertise. He looked at subject matter as a convenient way to compartmentalize the information that must be presented– he didn’t teach physical education – he taught students. In his gym the subjects of math, science, physics, sportsmanship and the pursuit of excellence were encompassed in every activity, every exercise, every game and every competition.

Many of his student athletes benefited and went on to achieve at the highest level including county, regional, state and national level competitions. During his tenure, Ann Street students dominated the physical fitness competitions sponsored by the Board of Education’s Physical Education Dept. At one point East Side High Schools starting baseball team was composed of 9 Ann St. graduates. They went on to excel in The Greater Newark Tournament and state-wide competitions. Two of Ernie’s students were drafted by the NY Yankees (Gerald Piccini) and Houston Astros (Al Cajide). In Football, Patrick “T” Ray , Tony Sanchez and many others forged outstanding careers. Also being inducted along- side Ernie is his former student, the classie Little Richie Stanchek.

After retiring in 1986 Ernie continued training athletes from New Jersey including his 4 sons who went on to compile 4 NJSIAA State wrestling championships, 6 National NAIA championships, 1 2nd place NCAA Div One medal and two 3rd place finishes. Daughter Joan was even more gifted but too much of a lady to embarrass her brothers on the wrestling mat so she proved her merit by achieving an MS in Bio Chem from Columbia University and a DMD from UMDNJ in 1991. Dr. Robert Monaco also graduated from UMDNJ and is one of the area’s most prominent physicians, specializing in sports medicine. Rusty Pace Barringer High School

Regina Trotter was born in Columbia, Mississippi. At an early age Regina’s family migrated to Newark, NJ where she attended Maple Avenue Annex and Elementary schools. During Regina’s 8th grade year her best friend invited her to join the track team. During that season Regina was not sure about running track for the upcoming high school year. In Regina’s freshman’s year she did not want to track, after discussing this matter with her coach Angelo N. Clark and beating the best senior girl in the 200 meter dash at the Newark Public School Track & Field Championships, Regina quickly changed her mind.

During Regina’s sophomore year she fell in love with running track. The older girls encouraged her to perform well on and off the fields. Regina and the other girls would hold study sessions prior to practices to ensure all work was done in a timely fashion because the training for track and field took up so much time.

During Regina’s senior year with Coach James Carter she won the N.J.S.I.A.A. Meet of Champions 55 meter dash in 7.05 which still stands in the top 15 of all times. During the outdoor season she won the State sectional, North 2 Group 3, 100, 200 and the 400 meter dashes to help her team win the state sectional title. After moving on to the Group 3 Championship meet, she also repeated her wins in those events. Then in the Meet of Champions she elected not to run in the 400 meter dash, but focus on and win the 100 meters, which she did in 11.95 and 200 meter dash in 24.37 seconds.

At the end of the regular season Regina was invited to the prestigious, Golden West High School track & field meet, she placed second in the 100 in 11.6 seconds and in the 200 meter dash 23.7 seconds.

After high school, Regina attended Essex County College, Newark, NJ where she continued competing in the 55 and 200 meter dashes, where she won their conference championship. Due to family illness, Regina elected to be a caretaker for her family. Regina has since raised a beautiful family and resides in Newark with her fiancé Johnny Rollins. Aundrea Williams Barringer High School

Aundrea was born in Damascus, Georgia the fourth of five siblings but was raised in Newark, New Jersey since the age of four. Aundrea attended Belmont Runyon Street Elementary School up until the first grade and then graduated from Thirteenth Avenue Elementary School. Aundrea then attended Barringer High School graduating in 1982. He received a football scholarship to play at Delaware State University where he played for Head Coaches Joe Purzycki and William Collick.

Aundrea enjoyed a stellar football career at Barringer High School playing for legendary Head coach Frank Verducci for three years and for the late Solomon Johnson his senior year amassing a record of 33-7 during his high school career. During his four years of varsity football at Barringer he achieved All-City League, All- Essex County, All-State 2nd team group 4, Centenary Prep All-American Team, and Essex County Scholar Athlete Award honors. While playing at Barringer, he played alongside former high school football greats such as Keith Hunter, Norman Granger, John Brooks, and many more. The Barringer teams Aundrea played on made the NJSIAA playoffs three out of his four years. While at Delaware State University, Aundrea was a four year starter and made the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Football Team as a junior and senior. In 1985 and 1987 he played on two MEAC Championship teams while playing with Super Bowl wide receiver John Taylor of the San Francisco 49ers. In 1987 he played in the Black College All-Star Freedom Bowl game which was coached by Head Coaches Willie Jeffries and NFL Hall of Famer Larry Little.

After college Aundrea began working as a manager for Footlocker, a division of the F.W. Woolworth Corporation. He was then contacted a year later by his college defensive coordinator Coach William Collick who had taken the head coaching position at Delaware State University. Aundrea was offered an assistant coaching position to coach the inside linebackers and special teams coordinator responsibilities. While at DSU Aundrea helped coach DSU teams winning the MEAC Conference Championship in 1989, ‘90, and ‘91 out of his six years coaching there. Aundrea’s greatest joy in coaching was being able to recruit high school student athletes from the New York, New Jersey metropolitan area and help them grow as productive citizens while they earned their college degrees.

Aundrea has coached at several high schools in the Newark school systems such as MX Shabazz, Central High School, and West Side High School where he was a coach on the 2007 Rough Rider Football Coaching Staff which won the NJSIAA Section 2 Group 3 Football State Championship.

In addition, Aundrea spends his spare time mentoring kids from the YAP (Youth Advocate Program) working with at risk kids and gang members. Currently Aundrea works at the Essex County Juvenile Detention Facility as a Captain in the Internal Affairs Unit. Aundrea lives in East Orange and is supported by his fiancée Roxanne Williams, brothers Raniero Williams and Maurice Williams, and Sisters Katrina Boseman and Sheila Allen, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Zeinab Kone Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year

October 2, 1999, around 6:00 in the morning a legend was born; destined for greatness with an ambition and fierceness of a panther. That legend is me, Zeinab Kone. Born in Evreux, France, I moved to Cote D’Ivoire to learn self-discipline, perseverance, respect and hard work. As I grew older my mother decided I needed a place with more opportunities, a place where I can excel. Traveling from Cote D’Ivoire to New Jersey at the age of 9 ½ was a prodigious move for me. I didn't speak English nor did I understand it. I first lived in E.O, then we moved to Irvington and finally Newark. I entered Weequahic High School in my sophomore year, the year which I decided will be the beginning of my legacy.

My whole educational experience was basically me making sure I never fail because my mother placed into my brain that “America is the land of opportunities, one mess and there’s no going back, I’m not from here like most of these people, so if I try to be like them, I won’t be able to recover; I don’t have a choice but to be better.” I’ve always sought after being the best, being number one and that type of greed isn’t good. Ambition and dedication are completely different from greed, hatred and jealousy. I learned to just give it my all, and not to be better than someone above me or someone who has been praised. I learned not to try to be someone else, to be myself, live for myself, live a fulfilling, giddy life. I’ve tried my best at everything I did. I set goals for myself as I grew older realizing that life doesn’t have to be so serious; I can have fun from time to time, I just have to know when to regroup myself. I entered many oratorical contests during my middle school year in hopes of bettering my speech, and sometimes won first, second and even third place. I was a very active girl, my gym teacher at the first school I ever attended noticed that in me, just by looking at me. Gym has always been my favorite subject, even till this day. During my freshman year of high school I decided I wanted to be very involved in my school community. I made a promise to myself in 9th grade that I would join track, volleyball, cheerleading and maybe basketball. I also wanted to be a part of the student body in the near future, and I wanted to pass all my classes, end high school with at least a 4.0 gpa. I didn’t let myself down- if anything I surpassed my own goals; became captain of the volleyball and track team, was elected president of the student body, couldn’t cheerlead because I had a promising future in my track career, and I graduated with a 4.2, as Valedictorian of my school.

I’m grateful for the values my family instituted in me, and the obstacles I’ve faced in my life. I am who I am due to these setbacks, and personal issues. I am an acting and modeling enthusiast, but I also love helping people. I want to be become a doctor, but I also want to be an actress, a journalist, and a model. I am now attending the School of Arts & Sciences at Rutgers New Brunswick, undeclared but tracking pre-med. My future is unknown, but I’m sure it will be a bright one. Prince Abimah Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year University High School

Prince was born in Ghana, West Africa but is a product of Newark, where he attended University High School. In the fall as a freshman, Prince played varsity soccer for Weequahic High School under Coach Hilton, where, for the first time since 2011 they qualified for the State Championships and Prince received the MVP award. He later transferred teams playing for West Side High School under Coach Henry obtaining 4 varsity letters, achieved MVP for the subsequent years, as well the Student Athlete award for maintaining an above 4.0 GPA all throughout the seasons.

Immediately after soccer season Prince jumped right into indoor track where he received 4 varsity letters, and the Student Athlete award for holding the highest GPA on the roster (including all students from the level freshmen to the senior level). Promptly following indoor track was Outdoor Track & Field where Prince received similar awards. Being a sprinter Prince, played an important role in taking University’s 4x100m relay team to the NJSIAA Group 1 Championship as he a gave a crucial handoff to the teams’ anchor and placing them in first place.

On the academic side, Prince was a Math Olympics Champion, President of SLAM (Student Learning About Medicine), and was Valedictorian of University High School’s Class of 2018. Currently enrolled at Rutgers University, Prince is majoring in Biology/Pre-Med Track, aspiring to become a Nurse Anesthetist. Tamara D. Johnson Female Athlete of the Year University High School

Tamara Danielle Johnson was born and raised to Vangela Crowe and Troy Johnson, Sr., in Newark, New Jersey. She attended Louise A. Spencer, Maple Ave. School, TEAM Academy, and University High School. From a very young age, it was easy to see the undeniable gifts in her. She was extremely inquisitive, active, loving, protective, and caring. There was nothing she couldn’t do when she put her mind to it. She was so confident, and accepted all challenges.

Tamara’s academic career is incredible. She skipped 2nd grade, but never skipped a beat, making her one of the youngest in her graduating class. In grade 4, Tamara earned a perfect score of 300 in Math on the NJ ASK assessment, the mandated state test at the time. She went on to University High and was inducted into the National Honor Society her sophomore year, and graduated #3 in her class. In addition, she earned a host of awards in English, Math, etc.

She earned the Essex County Scholar Athlete Award, 3-E Award for Effort, Top 5 Award from the Mayor, Superintendent’s Award, Special Congressional Award, and a host of others. She also earned the Bronze Shield Scholarship, Clifford Alford Lodge Scholarship, and Zonta Scholarship, and many, many others.

Tamara was introduced to sports at a very early age. She was top in her swim class at the Newark YMCA. She advanced to orca status by the age of 7. She excelled in gymnastics. Tamara was invited to try-out for the gymnastics team due to her advanced class performance by the age of 7, an opportunity granted to exceptional 9 year-olds, and made the team. She placed 4th in the state overall. Tamara also excelled in soccer, boxing, volleyball (All-Conference Honorable Mention), cross-country, track and field, and basketball. Having parents who excelled in track and basketball, it was of no surprise that track and basketball would come to be her main focuses.

Tamara has run track since the early age of 8. She is in Who’s Who among athletes for the high jump, and was #10 in the nation when she was 10 years old. She also ran cross-country, the 400m hurdles, and the 100m hurdles. Tamara also came in second place two consecutive years in the 55m hurdles at the Colgate Women’s Games, and earned two $500 college scholarships.

Although Tamara has great adoration for all athletics, basketball has come to be her true love. She has played basketball since 8 years-old. She has a solid intellectual I.Q. of the game. She has helped lead her high school, University High, to 3 sectional championships, and two Group 1 state championships. She earned a host of awards and a lot recognition, including: team captain for 2 years, most improved, defensive player of the year, 2nd team all conference, 2nd team all-tournament (Holiday tournament), etc.

Tamara has left the best roadmap for her younger sister, Tara.

Tamara is attending Rutgers Camden, and is majoring in Criminal justice. Newarker. Shamir Johnson Male Athlete of the Year East Side High School

Shamir Johnson was born and raised in the southward of Newark, New Jersey. He attended McKinley Elementary and East Side High Schools where he excelled as a student-athlete. Shamir discovered early in his life about his passion for and special talent in basketball. As a youngster, he participated in the Zoo Crew Basketball League, a grass root organization that provided a venue for young adolescents to play basketball in a premium setting, where his special talents were discovered by many observers. Shortly afterwards, Shamir continued his career as a student and basketball player at McKinley Elementary School where he led his team to the Newark Public Schools Championship title. After graduating from McKinley Elementary School, Shamir continued his strive for excellence in the classroom and on the court at East Side High School. During his tenure at East Side High School, Shamir led the Red Raiders to three conference championships, three Newark Public Schools Christmas titles, Two Essex County Basketball Tournaments titles and One North II Section IV Basketball Sectional title. In his senior year, his team finished with a 29 – 3 record, second best in school history.

Shamir also demonstrated outstanding academic success. He was on East Side High School honor roll throughout his career while taking Honors and AP classes, ultimately graduating with a 3.4 GPA. Based on his academic and athletic accomplishments, he earned the Men of Essex Scholar Athlete Award in his senior year. Two coaches who had great influence on, and impacted Shamir’s life, were Coaches Garvin and Tavares from East Side High School. Through the use of caring, mentoring and positive leadership in youth development and growth strategies, Shamir acquired the skills to be successful in his life’s aspirations. While Coach Garvin pushed Shamir in the weight room and on the court and Coach Tavares pushed him in the classroom, setting him on the pathway to high expectations and a high standard of achievement. Shamir is now enrolled into East Stroudsburg University, where he will continue to pursue his educational objectives and basketball career. Akbar H. Cook President’s Humanitarian Award

Akbar H. Cook Sr. was born and raised in Newark’s West Ward. He attended Essex Catholic High School, where he excelled as a student and basketball player. Mr. Cook attended college on two basketball scholarships, attending St. Catherine’s College in Kentucky before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University, a Division I university in Boca Raton, Florida. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Administration from St. Peters University in Jersey City in 2006.

As the principal of Newark's West Side High School, he identified a problem some of his students were experiencing. Some of the students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. The young people were being bullied to the extent that mean-spirited classmates posted photos of them in dirty collars or stained pants on social media. Cook shared this situation with the MCJ Amelior Foundation, which has adopted the school and pays for some of its programs. The PSEG Foundation was present during that conversation and provided a $20,000 grant to pay for the five washing machines and five dryers, as well as renovation advice. Ellen DeGeneres got wind of his efforts, invited him to her TV show where Cheerios presented him with a check for $50,000 to in his efforts. The community has responded with vigor, donating laundry detergents and dryer sheets so that students facing challenges can do their laundry at school for free. Cook cleared out the football team locker room to create a laundry room, which is open Monday and Friday, a teacher in an adjacent room will help students with school work while they wash their clothes. “With the laundromat, it’ll be a benefit to students because they’re still getting their education and they’re getting their clothes cleaned,” he said. “You can come to school smelling like Tide every day.” Before all this, as a Vice Principal, Mr. Cook started the “Lights Out” Program during the summer, where from 6:00 to11;00 pm he would open the W.S. gym for basketball, table games and dance music. There are X Box and Play Station games projecting on the walls with sports games being played by the kids, with adults lifting weights while their kids played in the gym.

And again with the help of the Amelia Foundation, they provided meals for the participants ( He would bring the extra food to Penn Station for the homeless on his way home at 11:30 pm ).

In addition, while a VP and Varsity basketball coach in 2016 & 2017, he brought two consecutive Group II State Championships to the Newark School and was Co-Director of Greater Newark’s LifeCamp, a summer camp for inner city youth.

Mr. Cook and his wife Sheridan are the proud parents of Yasin, Akbar Jr. and Ahmad. Newark Athletic Hall of Fame LAWRENCE D. FURLOW
