Most of us will only get to see the start and finish of these races today, but make no mistake; there is a lot that happens in between. Just as in life, these athletes are learning that it is the journey along the way that matters most. The hard work and perseverance that it takes to be successful here will go a long way towards preparing them for many future challenges. To the athletes and coaches – good luck and continued success in pursuing all of your goals. To the parents and fans – cheer the runners on with pride and the knowledge that they are giving it their best. To the officials, volunteers and park personnel – thank you for providing a safe, fair and enjoyable experience for the athletes and spectators alike. To the winners – congratulations! The NJSIAA is composed of 435 member high schools. It provides more than 265,000 student-athletes opportunities to participate in nearly 3,000 games, workshops, clinics and other NJSIAA-sponsored activities within a given year. The NJSIAA offers more championships for its student-athletes than any other state in the nation: For Boys: Cross-Country, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Outdoor Track Championships, Tennis, and Volleyball. For Girls: Cross-Country, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Golf, Lacrosse, Softball, and Outdoor Track Championships. Competitive athletics is nothing more than playing according to a set of rules. Sports are the greatest example on earth of the practical application of the Golden Rule. Your support and encouragement of our high school sports program are earnestly invited. NJSIAA Assistant Director Don Danser Don Danser planned to retire this December from NJSIAA. He passed away suddenly in June, shortly after conducting the summary meeting for Spring Track and Field. Danser, who served as the track and field and cross-country tournament director for the NJSIAA for many years, was an Assistant Director with the NJSIAA since 2001. In 1972, he took a job at Rancocas Valley as an English teacher. After serving as an assistant coach of cross-country for a few years, Don became the head coach at Rancocas Valley in 1976. He went 81-39 with two league and one county championship in his 10 years as head coach. He was also an assistant track coach for eight years Don became a track and field official in the mid 1970s, and soon became the director of every major meet in South Jersey. In the early 1980’s, Danser became the Program Director for the South Jersey Coaches Winter Meets held at various colleges (Widener, Swarthmore, Haverford) and became assistant director for the NJSIAA State Group and State Track and field Championships. In the mid 1980’s, Danser became co-director of the state indoor and outdoor championships, and in 1991, the director. In 1997, he became director of the state cross-country championships as well. Don retired from teaching at Rancocas Valley in 1997 to take a position at the NJSIAA as project manager. He remained Tournament Director for cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track. In addition, Don became responsible for the championship souvenir programs. In 2001, Danser was promoted to Assistant Director of the NJSIAA in charge of Cross-Country and Track, major NJSIAA publications, and assisting with other sports and NJSIAA projects. Don Danser’s contributions to the sports of Track and Field & Cross Country were many. He was innovative in the integration of technology in scoring and recording results. He was the authority on rules and regulations and he led through his hard work and dedication to the sport. He will be missed. As we move forward in continuing to provide opportunities to our student athletes, Don will be remembered as a mentor, advocate and true friend to our track community.
