2 PRINCIPAL’S NOTE Dear Lancers: I wish you all the best as you begin your new season of Lancer Athletics. No matter what sport in which you participate or support, you are bringing a tremendous sense of Lancer pride to Livingston High School. Athletics have the uncanny ability to bring a school and community together in common interest. Athletes, I thank you for choosing to represent our school in this arena. Being a member of a Lancer sports team means committing to a common goal, sharing a work ethic focused on excellence, and expending your greatest effort every time you step foot on the court, diamond, or field. What I am most proud of is the manner in which our student athletes conduct themselves with class and sportsmanship. Although developed on the practice fields of LHS, these are character traits that will serve you long after graduation as you become leaders in the workforce and community. I thank our Big L Club for their continued and growing sponsorship of our athletic programs and entire student body. Last year, the Big L started a new spirited tradition with the end-of-year pep rally for seniors, which created the awesome opportunity for graduating students to celebrate each other and their successes as a class. I am confident that this partnership will continue to flourish in support of our school and students throughout the 2016-2017 school year. I look forward to a year a cheering together and celebrating our successes on and off the field of competition. Go Lancers! Mark Stern

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

With the 2015 -2016 athletic year behind us, we are ready to build on the energy, success and community spirit that led to a memorable past year. Under the umbrella of ACCOUNTABILITY, LEADERSHIP and TRADITION our Lancer sports teams will be energetic with respect to the spirit of competition, while at the same time building upon the rich athletic tradition established at Livingston High School. Please come out and show your support as our Lancer sports teams begin another great year!

Go Lancers! Dave Cohen

4 WHAT IS THE BIG “L” CLUB? The Big “L” Club was established in 1958 and was formed by a group of dedicated supporters to become the official sports booster of LHS. The Club’s primary purpose is to support the Lancer Athletic Program while boosting morale. The athletic program now fields more than 60 teams at the varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen levels.

The Big “L” Club supports the Athletic Program throughout the entire year sponsoring the Fall, Winter, and Spring Awards nights presenting award plaques to the athletes who have received outstanding recognition at the conference, county, and state levels. The Big “L” Club continues to induct into the Hall of Fame, honoring the recipients at a Hall of Fame Brunch in October. Each year in May, our senior athletes look forward to participating in our Lancers on Parade Fundraiser, where our very own LHS student athletes get to showcase outfits and enjoy food donated from local vendors. It is truly an inspiring night for our community to come together, as local businesses, restaurants, and clothing vendors embrace Livingston’s finest, making it a special night for our seniors. In June, as the school year comes to a close, The Big ”L” hosts a Pep Rally for the entire senior class where the LHS male and female athlete of the year is announced, and we honor all of our senior athletes, cheerleaders and band members. At the Pep Rally we provide a motivational speaker to motivate the senior class and also announce our gift of the year to Livingston Athletic Department.

The Big “L” Club also contributes time and funds to a variety of projects to benefit Livingston High School athletes and the student body at large. In the past, we have gifted exercise equipment for the fitness and wellness center, helped purchase the softball scoreboard and golf cart for our LHS sports trainers, donated a Hall of Fame Wall which proudly presents all of our time honored athletes in the Wellness Center. The Big “L” provided video cameras and software for all of our LHS coaches and teams to use for instructional purposes. To boost the spirit of LHS, The Big “L” Club has purchased a mascot, Sir Lawrence the Lancer, who attends various school and sporting events through out the year. Recently, two portable speakers and a tunnel of success was donated for all teams to use for their big games.

The Big “L” Club gives our community a reason to come together to participate and cheer for our LHS sports teams. Thank you for your support, as The Big “L” Club will continue to dedicate ourselves to honor tradition and continue to enhancing our athletic program.

5 DEDICATION

Big L Club Dedicates 2016 Fall Sports Journal To: Jason Daily Jason Daily just completed his 17th year as a teacher at Livingston High School, and his 16th season as head coach of the Lancer Girls Softball team. Jason grew up in Bridgewater and was graduated from Bridgewater West (now Bridgewater-Raritan) in 1988. He went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Raritan Valley Community College, where he also played baseball, before earning his Bachelors Degree at Kean University. Throughout the course of his decorated career, Coach Daily has left his mark in each of the roles in which he serves at Livingston High School.

As a teacher, Jason was recognized in 2016 as the Teacher of the Year for Livingston High School. In his role as teacher in the TV Studio and supervisor of the highly successful AM Wired program, he continues to be an integral part of the school community and the growth of the program in the district.

According to Principal, Mark Stern, “Mr. Daily sets high expectations for his students. He is careful to take into consideration the diverse levels of proficiency and plans and implements his instructional strategies accordingly. Most importantly, Mr. Daily balances high expectations for achievement in authentic assessment with a genuine nurturing and caring for his students. He has created an environment of mutual respect where all students are treated with dignity, are valued, and feel safe.”

Outside the boundaries of the classroom and inside the baselines of the softball field, Mr. Daily has been an outstanding, NJSIAA recognized coach, leading the Lancers to three state sectional championships in recent years. Jason has been at the helm since 2001 for the Lancers. Just this past season, Coach Daily won his 300th game as Livingston’s head coach, when the Lancers defeated , 6-3, on May 14. Additionally, he has guided the Lancers to three Essex County titles (2006, 2012, 2013), three state sectional crowns (2012, 2013, 2016) and back-to-back SEC titles in 2012 and 2013. From 2012 through May of 2014, Livingston was 40-1 in SEC play under Daily’s leadership.

When talking about his teams and players, you can sense the respect and admiration that Coach Daily has for each and every athlete he has coached throughout the years. However, his most important role as a teacher and coach is evident in his relationship with his daughter Alexa, and son Garrett.

Congratulations to Coach Daily for your contributions as a teacher and coach to Livingston High School and best of luck for many years of future success.

32 BOY’S CROSS COUNTRY The 2016 Cross Country season promises to be a very exciting one on the boy’s side with a mix of experienced and inexperienced runners. The Lancers will be led by a strong senior class of runners. Returning senior varsity members Michael Ciccone, Brendan Lindsey, Max Shapiro and Kevin Sweeny will look to build off their experiences and successes from last season and look to lead the team to victory in the season ahead. The team also welcomes back Nahshon’s brother Jalon Robinson to the lineup as well as senior twins Yuki and Tsubasa Nakayama who transferred to Livingston a year ago and will be joining the team this fall for the first time.

The team should benefit from added depth, the return of a very strong junior and sophomore class and a large incoming freshman class. The team is looking forward to the return of juniors Steven Arnold, Nathaniel Berkley, Daniel Cao, Ben Hodes, Eric Mooney, Max Nunez and Raymon Yang to the lineup. The coaches are also looking forward to the return of sophomores Jonathan Ackerman, Jonathan Chen, Cameron Izadi, Kevin Izadi, Ido Kadouri, Will Osborne, Cristian Zapata and Brian Zou to the team. With over 20 new names on the roster, the coaching staff is excited to meet and work with many new student athletes over the course of the season.

The team will be opening this season in early September at Branch Brook Park with the first of 4 dual meet competitions. The teams’ success this season will depend on a strong focused work ethic throughout the line up, staying healthy, and running as a team. The team will also be focused on developing more depth and consistency throughout the lineup. The team and coaches are eagerly excited to get the season started and we wish them the best as they compete against many of the top teams in the state this fall. Go Lancers!

34 GIRL’S CROSS COUNTRY The 2016 Girls Cross Country program will shortly open their season competing in the (SEC). The season shows promise as the Lancers return a few of last year’s top runners, with some developing talent now in their second cross country campaigns. The team should also benefit from some new talent eager to earn varsity spots. The coaching staff has challenging yet attainable goals for the Lady Lancers this season. They are looking to show improvement on the Conference, County and State levels, building off of the 2015 season which had some bright spots and good memories. The squad will be competing in dual, invitational and championship meets on the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels. The girls will battle in the Liberty Division of the SEC. Many of them have been working all summer long in preparation for a push to obtain their team goals. The schedule includes clashes with many of the top teams in the state which should prepare the squad for the championship season.

The team should benefit from senior Toni Pauwels who is coming off a great 2015 campaign. Returning sophomore Samantha Keenan is looking to make her mark on this year’s squad. Both girls are eagerly looking forward to another season of hard racing in the woods. Senior Mikaili Anderson, juniors Amanda Clark, and Anna Levy and sophomore Emily Arends are looking to step it up a notch this season. They all could heavily contribute to the success of this season. The squad should be positively impacted by the addition to the program of freshman Erin Chang and Shannon O’Connor who have looked good in their summer training runs. The Lancers are also returning some strong competitors in Judlynn Julceus, Judanicka Julceus, Dianah Graham, Ervana Scotland and Nicole Levenback. The team will be working on developing more depth and consistency throughout the lineup with new additions Yana Sang, Mary Yang, Hannah Feinberg, Colleen Peck, Tina Li, Evelyn Grace and Avika Bansal. With additional frosh Celeste Calderon, Ruby Chen, Aline Chow, Kayla Hudson, Elizabeth Lam, Morgan Levy, Courtney Rosen and Shani Winkler all coming out for their first XC season, it should be a memorable one.

The unit is finishing up its preseason summer training program, laying a strong base for the fall training and racing schedule. The teams’ success will depend on a strong focused work ethic throughout the line up, staying healthy, believing in each other and developing confidence in their own abilities. If everyone does their part to contribute to the team goals then the individual goals will take care of themselves. Coach Czeizinger, Coach Memory and Coach Chaudruc are all looking forward to working with the squad to reach its goals and enjoy a memorable season. CROSS COUNTRY COACHES

37 LADY LANCER FIELD HOCKEY

The Lady Lancer Field Hockey team is back and excited for the start of the 2016 season. With the return of 13 seniors, this is the biggest graduating class to come through the program in the last four years. With their tremendous work ethic, skill and passion these tenacious seniors look to make a name for Livingston Field Hockey this fall. After losing some tough overtime games last season, the Lady Lancers can’t wait to compete with cross town rival Newark Academy, Cranford, Union and Westfield. Senior defenders Abby Hauptman, Emily Fidler, Olivia Freschi, Elyssa Gordon and Sharon Perlmutter will bring strength and poise while defending their cage and protecting senior goalie Daniella Terry. Goalkeeper Daniella Terry had an outstanding season last year recording over 250 saves and earning First Team Honors in the conference for her dominance in the goal. The midfield will be led by seniors Kelly Wolfe, Julia Felsenheld, Jane Ryzhik and Victoria Zotti as they look to bring the speed and skill necessary to balance the field. Senior Kelly Wolfe was awarded the Best Teammate Award last year for her commitment, selflessness and positive leadership on and off the field. The forward line will be led by seniors Maisy Coyne, Emma Kelly and Abby Levy as they aim to help their team finish when in their offensive end. Seniors Maisy Coyne and Emma Kelly were their team’s high scorers last season with Coyne earning Second Team Honors and Kelly earning Honorable Mention in the conference for their efforts on the field. The program is honored to have named Maisy Coyne, Abby Hautpman, Daniella Terry and Kelly Wolfe as their captains for the 2016 season.

Supporting this year’s senior class will be several highly motivated juniors and sophomores. The Lady Lancers are thrilled to bring back Juniors Marley Arzonico, Beth Goldberg and Bari Greenwald as they look to continue to gain experience at their respective positions. The sophomore class will be led by Juliette Banner, Klareena Sheena Cainglet, Rachel Dambrot, Dylan Dansky, Emma Frankstein, Lindsay Haaker, Sarah Haber, Rachel Leibel, Juliet Nangini, Melanie Sanoff and Emily Schaefer as they look to challenge each other on the field while working hard to earn their spot come game day.

The Lady Lancers also look to welcome the following incoming freshman Madelyn Arsht, Mia Bucich, Christina DiTonno, Brianna Flaherty, Isabella Freschi, Halle Goldberg, Jesse Halper, Chloe Heller, Meghan Kelly, Lauren Kravetz, Jaynie Leavy, Grace Levey, Jaclyn Lockwood, Jamie Mager, Briana Melucci, Shreya Pandya, Lauren Rakow, Samara Rhodes, Amanda Weissman, and Devin Wiseberg to the program. This freshman class is by far the biggest group to come through the program in the last ten years and we can’t wait to see what they will accomplish throughout the season.

The field hockey program is looking forward to a great 2016 season where improving on last season’s success is their goal. The Lancers can’t wait to get on the field and compete after a great deal of hard work in the preseason.

44 BOY’S SOCCER

This year’s Boy’s Varsity Soccer team will have its work cut out for them after graduating a large nucleus of starters from the past two years, which saw the teams advance to two Essex County Championship games. This year’s team does return six starting players from a year ago, but two pressing questions will be who will step up from the junior varsity and freshmen teams to claim the remaining starting positions, and can the team stay away from the injuries this year.

Senior Captains Ben and Jason Neyer will help to lead the way along with fellow seniors Philippe Halaban, Tommy Falus, Austin Siegel, Eric Silverstein,Josh Leibowitz. In goal for the Lancers will be senior Josh Sampson who will need to be technically sound and use his size to help thwart goal scoring opportunities inside the penalty box area. Newcomers Brian Kelly and Ryan Melnick, both sophomores, will also get a good look this year and see plenty of action. First year varsity player Matt Santola will look to lock up a spot-on defense, while Zach Schwartz will look to add some offense from the outside midfield position. Both players are seniors.

The team finished ranked 15th in the Star-Ledger Top 20 last year and will open up once again on the road at Newark East Side, the Lancers defeated East Side 3-2 last year in a thriller. This will be a very difficult test as Newark East Side also finished in the Top 20 last year. Add the always talented and loaded Seton Hall Prep, Montclair Mounties, West Orange Mountaineers and the Millburn Millers and once again it should be a very entertaining season for the Lancer soccer team.

51 GIRL’S SOCCER

Last year’s 2015 Livingston High School Girls Soccer team should be remembered as a team that never surrendered. The team finished with a 10-5-3 record, that included memorable battles against rival Montclair… such as their county semi-final come back (ultimately succumbing 3-4 in OT) and their hard fought 1-2 OT loss in the state sectional quarterfinals with less than 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Even with these two heartbreaking losses, the team finished tied for 2nd in their conference (the SEC – American division) and top 4 in the year end Essex County rankings.

This season, the 2016 seniors are poised to “flip the script” and return the favor against the Mounties and anyone else who gets in their way. During their four years at LHS, these young women have had a major impact on the girls soccer program, both on and off of the field. These nine individuals bleed green and white and would love to cap off their career by adding multiple championships to their resume and the trophy case at LHS. Leading the way for the Lancers are seniors: Jessie April, Alex Franchino, Kaitlyn Kelly, Abby Kuznick (tri-captain), Megan Leffler (tri-captain), Jolie Price, Marissa Rivera, Olivia Shevrin, and Caitlyn Sugarman (tri-captain). As team captains, Kuznick, Leffler and Sugarman lead by example with their skill, knowledge, and passion for the game. Franchino, Kelly, Leffler, Price, and Rivera will lead a stout defense that looks to thwart all attackers. Kuznick and Shevrin make up the midfield and will look to both support the defense and start the offense. April and Sugarman will look to find the back of the net often. The Lancers pride themselves on their defense, but this year it might be their balance and strength down the center of the field that leads them to victory.

Supporting this year’s senior class is a group of highly skilled and talented juniors and sophomores. Leading the way for the junior class is Tori Belcuore – who was a 1st team All-Conference and All-County player as a sophomore in 2015 (and is noted as a “player to watch” on NJ.com). Belcuore, along with fellow juniors Christine Craitar, Tara McCormack, Hannah Oliviera, and Ashley Reuter will bolster the midfield and lead the attack this season. Morgan Darrow and Sarah Miller look to break into the varsity starting lineup and begin to make their mark in the program, as well. This season, two young keepers (Jocelyn McCauley and Nicole Kwockza) will man the net and create one of the best duos in the entire state. These talented players, along with a number of their fellow classmates and some highly skilled incoming freshmen, will compete mightily with the upperclassmen for key varsity spots in 2016.

Head coach Paul Raiz is entering his fourteenth season leading the Lady Lancers. Coach Raiz is very fortunate to have a group of very knowledgeable and dedicated assistant coaches at his side. Coach Brian Carr, now in his sixth year with the program, has completely immersed himself in all aspects of the program and will assist the varsity squad. In her third season, Coach Natalie Natale continues to help grow the freshmen team and assist with the program. Two new additions to coaching staff are former Lancers Joe Gill and Steven Brooks. Both Joe and Steven will utilize their immense love and knowledge of the game to assist all levels of the program.

59 LANCER GIRLS’ TENNIS

The 2016 Livingston Girls Tennis team combines experience with talented first year players. The team competes in the North I, Group IV Section in the State Tournament. In the Super Essex Conference and Essex County Tournament returning state championship teams from Millburn and Newark Academy provide the Lancers with very challenging competition.

This season promises to be an exciting, demanding year. Sophomore Nicole Bazhevon returns in singles and is joined by Alicia Li, Abbie Bekov, Laine Esralew, Vivian Lin, Pujan Neopane, and three-year senior starter Jacqueline Gelman. Gelman suffered a broken ankle in early August and her return was uncertain. She earned Super Essex All-Conference Honors in doubles in 2015. Bazhenov and Li are sophomores, while Bekov, Esralew, Lin, and Neopane are juniors. Returning players with varsity experience are seniors Janis Li, Antra Patel, Annie Song, Ashley Wang, and sophomore Komal Misra. Emma Conforti and Brielle Schwartz are 9th graders with U.S. Tennis Association Tournament experience and will greatly enhance the starting lineup. A number of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen are also competing for varsity positions.

The tennis team will look to improve on last year’s 13 & 8 win-loss record. Coaches Elliot Lovi and Amanda Buyes have high expectations with a very dedicated, hard working group of players.
