J. Ross Opening Ennouncement Boys and Girls, Did You
10/3/48 - J. Ross Opening ennouncement Ni Boys and girls, did you ever hear the famous legend of the Trojan Horse? It's a story that goes way back to ancient times. Thousands of years ago, the Greeks and the Trojans had a war, For ten yeare the Greeks besieged the city of Troy, but they couldn't force their way inside. Yinally they resorted to trick- ery, They built this phony horee. It was a huge statue, made of wood and hollow inside. In the hollow part the Greeks hid their best warriors. Then they told the Trojans "Hey, we're your friends. See, here a nice present for you, Open your gates and take it inside the city." Well, the Trojans were a bunch of saps. They fell for the gag. They couldn't resist this beautiful statue that their enemies were handing 'em for free. Rut the minute they dragged the horse inside the city, out popped the Greek soldiers. And that was the and of the city of Troy. Even today, boys and girls, we still use the expression 'trojan horse". When an outside enemy poses as a friend and tries to beat us by means of a iy trick, we say he'a using "trojan horse taotics". For instanoe, the troublemakers who want to weaken our country. They use very special trojan hone tactice. They invent a lot of falsehoods about the different racial and religious groups who live in our country. They dress up these falsehoods vith fancy oateleword slogans. Then they sidle up to some unsus- pecting fellow and pretend to have his welfare at heart. -

EMPIRICAL INQUIRY TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AFTER THE LAWYERING PROCESS RICHARD K. NEUMANN, JR. & STEFAN H. KRIEGER* One of the many ways in which The Lawyering Process was a pioneering book was its extensive reliance on empirical research about lawyers, lawyering, and activities analogous to some or another aspect of lawyering. To what extent has the clinical field accepted Gary Bellow and Bea Moulton's invitation to explore empirical stud- ies generated outside legal education and perhaps engage in empirical work ourselves to understand lawyering more deeply? Although some clinicians have done good empirical work, our field as a whole has not really accepted Gary and Bea's invitation. This article ex- plains empirical ways of thinking and working; discusses some of the mistakes law scholars (not only clinicians) make when dealing with empirical work; explores some of the reasons why empiricism has encountered difficulty in law schools; and suggests that empiricism might in some ways improve our teaching in clinics. -

The 2019 Garnish Scholar Awards
The 2019 Garnish Scholar Awards Saturday, September 7, 2019 The 2019 Garnish Scholar-Athlete Awards From the Director’s Chair George VanderZwaag Executive Director of Athletics oday we recognize ten of our senior students as Garnish TScholars. The Garnish Program was created in honor of Lysle “Spike” Garnish, coach and mentor to many Rochester students from 1930 to 1948. He became a trainer and assistant basketball coach in 1931. He was named an assistant baseball coach in 1932. Spike was an assistant football coach from 1945-48. The Friends of Rochester Athletics, through an alumni committee, reviews nominations of students from our varsity teams who have achieved at a high level in both their athletic and academic pursuits through their junior year. From these nominees, a small number are selected as Garnish Scholars. Harleigh Kaczegowicz (r.) starred in softball in all four years. She was elected as an Academic All-American and graduated with Phi Beta Periodically, the Garnish Memorial Citation is given to a Kappa honors. She is ranked in the top 10 in 19 career stat categories. graduate, faculty member, or a staff member for dedication and contributions to the intercollegiate athletic program. These students represent the ideal of the scholar-athlete. They lead our teams on the field of play, while doing outstanding work in the classroom. I am continually inspired by what our students are able to achieve when given the opportunities at a great institution like Rochester. What we know about the students that we recruit is that they set high goals for themselves inside and outside the classroom. -

Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America Exhibition Script Turf Pylon Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America Our love of sports begins in our hometowns. We play on ball fields and sandlots, on courts and on ice, in parks and playgrounds, even in the street. From pick‐up games to organized leagues, millions of Americans of all ages play sports. Win or lose, we yearn to compete and play another day. If we’re not playing sports, we’re watching them. We sit in the stands and root for the local high school team, or gather on the sidelines and cheer on our sons and daughters as they take their first swing or score their first goal. Hometown sports are more than just games — they shape our lives and unite us and celebrate who we are as Americans. Turf Every sport has its place. Yet every one of us alive probably owes our existence to this obscure Russian. Why? Well, on 26 September 1983, Petrov was a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defence Forces. He was serving as the chief officer on duty at Serpukhov-15, a bunker just outside Moscow. This facility was home to OKO, the Soviet missile early warning system – Russia’s eye on its enemy. These were fraught times. The Cold War was at its zenith, and deployment of US nuclear-missile systems across Europe had enraged the Kremlin. -
