I-ee tlamilon (D-Ind"). There will also be meetings at the National Security Council. Mr. Claes is President of the EC Council of Ministers since Belgium assumed the six-month EC Council Presidency on July l. The meetings are expected to focus on assistance for the New Independent States and tlre countries of Central and Eastem Europe following the latest G-7 summit in Tokyo, the development of the Community's Common Foreign and Security Policy once the Maasricht Treaty is ratihed the situation in Yugoslavia, and the Middle East Peace Process. Alles is weg, ook de knipsels. Ik was in Chicago geweest en had een lezing in Omaha, Nebraska gegeven. Lunchte met leden van de ‘Ad-Sell Club’ in de Kamer van Koophandel aldaar. Had ook een televisie-interview in Omaha gegeven en een slaapwagen van de Burlington Railroad terug naar Chicago genomen. Gaf vervolgens een lezing in Evaston, Illinois en arriveerde hier met een Greyhoundbus vanuit Chicago. 19 januari 1961 Patrice Lumumba is nu in handen van Moise Tshombe in Katanga, wat me absoluut razend maakt. Zweedse UNO-troepen kwamen niet tussenbeide, toen soldaten van Tshombe de voormalige premier in elkaar sloegen. Hij werd in een jeep gesmeten, nà nog verdere mishandeling. Vier soldaten van Tshombe gingen boven op Lumumba en twee van zijn medestanders zitten. Hij is nu opgesloten in de gevangenis van Jadotville, in het hartje van het koperrijke gebied van Katanga. Ik vrees het ergste. Om 18:30 sprak ik voor de ‘Dutch Treat Club’ in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. 20 januari 1961 Mijn broer Theo schrijft onder meer uit Kaapstad: ‘This country is completely entangled in the most hopeless human relations. -

German reunification, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the re-established independence of the Baltic States and the liberation of Eastern Europe set in motion a process that has not yet come to an end. This chain of events released energy, which had previously been held back by the command economy, and gave impetus to a comprehensive modernization process of societies. The gap in living standards between East and West began to shrink. A major milestone was the enlargement of the European Union by ten new Member States in May 2004. To quote Willy Brandt: "What belongs together, grows together". Ukraine’s Orange Revolution has finally proved that freedom without democracy does not work. On the other hand, democracy does not function without the safeguards guaranteed by the rule of law and the democratic control exercised by civil society, a political opposition and the media – in other words a system of checks and balances. The bloodless dissolution of the Soviet Union and the ideological system it represented was a historic event, the uniqueness of which is accentuated by the violent collapse of Yugoslavia. Freedom is a mighty power. German re-unification became possible only after the birth of true freedom brought about by the collapse of the Berlin Wall. -

79 The Idea of Europe at the Origins of the European People’s Party. The Making of the European Manifesto and of the EPP’s Political Programme Jacopo CELLINI The history of an idea. European Christian Democracy and the idea of Europe after the Second World War After the Second World War, Christian Democratic parties (hereinafter, CD parties) of Western Europe had no institutionalized form of party cooperation.1 The frail transnational organisation Secrétariat International des Partis Démocrates d’Inspira- tion Chrétienne (SIPDIC), created in the 1920s, had been dismantled in the early 1930s, when most of its members were forbidden from doing political activity by authoritarian regimes in their home countries. Contacts between Christian Demo- cratic representatives were mostly maintained on a personal and informal level, often by personalities who were forced to live in exile.2 After the war, when political freedom was restored in Western Europe, a new or- ganisation had to be built from scratch. Thanks to the initiative of the Swiss Katholisch- Konservative Partei der Schweiz, the first official meeting between CD parties took place in Lucerne in 1947. Here two main lines confronted each other: the Swiss party, the Italian Democrazia Cristiana (DC) and the Austrian Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP) pushed for the creation of a strong International, ideologically consistent and institutionally formalized, while the French Mouvement Républicain Populaire (MRP) and the Belgian Christelijke Volkspartij-Parti Social Chrétien (CVP-PSC) pre- ferred a looser network, impervious to accusations of confessionalism. The second line prevailed, leading to the creation of the Nouvelles Équipes Internationales (NEI), which consisted of individuals or groups (and also political parties) that shared some general principles like a personalist and communitarian view of society, and the pursuit of peace and international cooperation, especially in Europe. -

With implications for the Varieties of Capitalism model Bob Schenk 3276783 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for obtaining the Master of Arts degree in History of Politics and Society Faculty of Humanities Utrecht University 18 November 2018 © b.j.e. schenk, 2018 Abstract This thesis argues that significant changes in Dutch industrial policies between the late 1960s and the late 2010s ultimately have been the result of active and purposeful involvement of corporate agents rather than corporatist intermediation. Apart from increasing absenteeism of labour unions, the changes involve a retreat of the gov- ernment as entrepreneurial initiator of industrial policy outputs (measures). Instead, the gov- ernment has increasingly accepted a compliant position with respect to preferences held by big businesses (or MNEs). The long-term development of industrial policy shows that more or less original ideas about where the country’s industries ought to be heading have been in- creasingly abandoned in favour of generic fiscal support for especially large and/or listed firms. These changes have moved the Dutch variety of capitalism tighter into what the literature qualifies as a Liberal Market Economy. The current study thus confirms earlier studies that have demonstrated that the Dutch variety of capitalism has moved away from the Coordinated Market Economy form. However, whereas several earlier studies have suggested that this change in form is the result of globalisation, thus rather implicitly proposing that what is at stake is simply a convergence to best practice, the current study does not find evidence for this suggestion. -
