The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and its members use sport as a vehicle for character development and administer programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the organization reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspect of sport. Through “Champions of Character,” the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of the following ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state: Bethany College, , , Kansas Wesleyan University, McPherson College, , Southwestern College, Sterling College, and . The KCAC is an affiliated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, , softball, golf, men’s and women’s cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor/outdoor track and field and tennis. 2013 Swedes volleyball 9 Volleyball Coaching Staff

Nathalea Stephenson - Head Coach Nathalea Stephenson has served as Bethany College’s head volleyball coach since 2008. During that time, she has coached one All-American, 17 Academic All-Americans, 36 All-Conference Academic award winners, and one Conference Player of the Year. She has also won the American Volleyball Coaches Award for Academics based on team GPA for six consecutive years. Stephenson has served as the rater for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) and been on several national committees representing the conference, including the National Head Coaches Committee. She holds a bachelor’s degree in math education from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in physical education from Emporia State University. Stephenson has a long history of involvement with schools in the KCAC. She previously coached at Bethany in 1997, at Kansas Wesleyan University as assistant coach, and at McPherson College from 2001 to 2008 as head volleyball coach and assistant athletic director. While at McPherson, Stephenson coached three Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, 14 KCAC Scholar Athletes, and two teams that received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Academic Award for team GPA. She was also an instructor in the math and physical education departments. Stephenson also has experience at the high school level and in club sports. She was the head volleyball coach at Great Bend High School, Ell-Saline High School, and Quivira Heights High School, and she helped start three club teams and organizations in Great Bend, Salina, and McPherson. Stephenson is active with the Kansas Volleyball Coaches Association, coaching in all-star matches and having served as the secretary/ treasurer, vice president, and president.

Dwila Busse - Assistant Coach Dwila Busse is a 2012 Bethany College graduate. Prior to coming to Bethany she attended Southwestern College for three years where she played volleyball. Busse then transferred to Bethany for her final year of volleyball and majored in criminal justice. Busse grew up in Wichita, Kan., and graduated from Wichita High School South in 2008.

Melissa Hardman - Assistant Coach Melissa Hardman returns to Bethany College as assistant volleyball coach. She will also serve as the intramural coordinator and teach physical education classes. Between playing and coaching, Hardman has over twenty years-experience with the game of volleyball. She spent three years as an assistant coach assistant coaching at McPherson College and two years at Bethany College from 2008-2010. Hardman attended and played volleyball for four years at Kansas Wesleyan University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and minors in health and psychology. She went on to earn her M.B.A. with an emphasis in sports management in May 2013. Hardman is married to David Hardman, a Bethany alum, and has a step-son Brenton.

Allison O’Neil - Student Assistant Allison O’Neil will be a 2014 graduate of Bethany College after she completes her student teaching this year. O’Neil played volleyball under Coach Stephenson for three years before becoming student assistant. During that time O’Neil was a setter and earned all-conference and all-American academic awards. She majored in elementary education with a special education endorsement K-12. O’Neil grew up in Scott City, Kan., and graduated from Scott City Community High School in 2010.

Manager - Sara McAfee Sara McAfee, Salina, Kan., is a junior transfer from Butler County Community College. She is majoring in elementary education with endorsement in Special Education.
