Join Bethany for Dedication of Renovated Nelson Lecture Hall & Keynote Address of David Rolph for Mauney Lecture Series in Business on February 6th Join us for two exciting events on Thursday, February 6. Bethany College will celebrate the renovated Nelson Lecture Hall at 10:30 a.m. The Nelson Flash Campaign kicked off with a $50,000 lead gift from an alumni couple as part of a match challenge to raise $130,000 for the Nelson building improvements. The updates to the lecture hall in include new carpet, desks, paint, ceiling tiles, projector, screen, sound system, lecture podium and the installation of air conditioning in the lecture hall for the first time. The remaining two phases—conversion of a classroom to office spaces and creation of a psychology lab--will take place during the 2020 summer break. Also, on February 6, David Rolph, co-founder and former CEO of Sasnak Management, Inc. (now Thrive Restaurant Group) will present a keynote address at 2 p.m. in Burnett, on Bethany campus, as part of the Mauney Lecture Series in Business. David Rolph grew up in the small town of Minneapolis in north central Kansas. Mr. Rolph is known for his involvement with Pizza Hut, Inc. During his college years he worked at Pizza Huts in Hays, Kansas and Iowa City. After graduating, he managed multiple Pizza Huts in the San Francisco Bay area. He was then promoted to Area General Manager for the San Francisco Bay Area at age 23. Later on, he partnered up with his brother Darrel, moved to Virginia, and began to open franchised Pizza Huts in northern Virginia, West Virginia, and Florida. They were able to develop 26 Pizza Huts in these locations and sold them to Pepsico in 1994. Join us to learn more about Mr. Rolph’s leadership and management. In 1984, Carl F and Catherine Herman Mauney Lecture Series in Economics-Business was established thanks to the generous $50,000 gift of Dr. and Mrs. C Herman Mauney of Albuquerque, New Mexico, named in honor of his parents, to establish an endowed fund for educational and professional development opportunities for students, faculty and friends of Bethany. Dr. Mauney was a former member of the Bethany College Board of Directors and a long-time friend of the college. Each year in consultation with the Academic Dean, the faculty of the Department of Economics-Business selects a distinguished scholar or business person who will lecture on current topics such as economics, accounting, small business management, marketing and labor relations. The dedication at 10:30 am in Nelson Science Lecture Hall and the keynote at 2 pm in Burnett, both on Bethany campus, are free and open to the public. B.C. Athletic Hall of Honor induction posthumously of Milton E. Rehnquist, Bethany College f.s.’24. [Graduate of Bethany Academy, and alumnus of Bethany College as former student class 1924] This was shared by A. John Pearson, class of 1959 at Bethany College, member of BC Athletic Honor selections committee, and former Director of Public Relations (1970-1992), Sports Information Director (1992-2004), and Director of Archives (2004-2006) at Bethany College Milton E. Rehnquist is the only known professional football player from BETHANY COLLEGE to play professionally in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE for nine consecutive years. The NFL this season is celebrating its 100th year anniversary. Also, Bruce Nelson, an alumnus of Bethany College in class of 1975, played just one season at tight end for Cleveland Browns as a back-up to starter Oscar Reed. Rehnquist, who was a student-athletic in the Bethany Class of 1924, was inducted posthumously into the Bethany College “Athletics Hall of Honor” in ceremonies last October 20, 2019. Rehnquist played professional football for six NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE teams – Kansas City Blues 1924; Cleveland Bulldogs 1925 and 1927; Kansas City Cowboys 1925; the Providence Steam Roller 1928,1929,1930,1931; New York Giants 1931; and Boston Braves 1932; and then he retired. He was voted as an All Pro in both 1928 and 1929, “NFL First Team All-Pro in 1929.” Rehnquist was born June 6, 1897 in Chicago, Illinois. Bethany College records indicate he came to Bethany Academy in Lindsborg, Kansas, from the Fairmont area in Minnesota. He attended the Bethany Academy (high school) and after his Academy years he entered Bethany College with the Class of 1924. He played college football for at least three years. He went on to play in the National Football League from 1924 to 1932 when he retired. During Rehnquist’s professional career, he played as a lineman at three different positions: guard, center, and tackle. He was listed as 6’0” tall, 229 pounds. He was an All Pro in both 1928 & 1929. He was probably one of the greatest athletes that Bethany produced. His individual pictures are in the Bethany College Daisy yearbook for 1921 (page 131). He is in the Bethany College MESSENGER student newspapers from September 27, 1919 through September 8, 1923. Rehnquist was named to the All Kansas Conference team in December 1922. He did not return to Bethany College in the fall of 1923 -according to a MESSENGER newspaper reference September 8, 1923. Bethany College alumni records indicate Rehnquist was a “former student,” rather than a graduate in his Class of 1924. Rehnquist’s professional football career was brought to light recently by Richard Bozzone, a member of Professional Football Researchers Association. The PFRA is an organization of researchers with a mission to preserve and in some cases to reconstruct professional football history. PFRA was founded June 22, 1979, in Canton, Ohio by writer/historian Bob Carroll and six other football researchers. Membership includes some of the world's foremost historians and authors. The organization publishes books and also gives awards each year for outstanding achievement in football research. According to Richard Bozzone of the Professional Football Researchers Association and other online researchers, Milt Rehnquist retired in Providence, Rhode Island. He worked as a high school coach with former teammate Jack Cronin. A Providence city directory from 1956 lists him as a guard at the R.I. State Prison. His wife was Mary Rehnquist. He died February 5, 1956. Women's Basketball Picks Up 65-56 Road Win at Ottawa The Bethany women's basketball team picked up a solid 65-56 win on the road at Ottawa University on Thursday. This is the Swedes' second of three contests this week. After making a second chance bucket on their first trip down the court, the Swedes took an early lead. However, the Braves answered quickly, netting a pair of free throws on their first trip. From there the Swedes went on a quick 10-0 run over two minutes to take a hearty lead. However, the Braves were able to swing things back to near even ground with an 11-1 run. The Swedes were able to drain a three-point goal in the last 10 seconds of the quarter to grab the lead back. The second quarter played out in Ottawa's favor when they tied the game and then immediately snatched the lead early on. While the teams traded points back and forth, the Braves were able to maintain the advantage throughout the quarter, taking a 30-27 lead into the break. In the early minutes of the third quarter, the Swedes tied things up twice before once again swinging things in their favor. Once Bethany did grab the lead, they pushed it to nine points immediately before the Braves scored again. Bethany was able to grab a double-digit lead twice in this quarter, eventually ending up with an eight-point advantage going into the final quarter of the contest. While the Braves scored first in the fourth, the Swedes rebounded with another 9-0 run to push their advantage to 14 points. However, Ottawa was once again able to tame the Swedes offense and the teams spent the remainder of the game exchanging buckets. Bethany was able to remain on top throughout this taking a 65-56 win.
