VOLLEYBALL FALLS ON THE ROAD AT BETHANY AND TABOR LINDSBORG/HILLSBORO, Kan. - The Southwestern College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend, falling in two different road contests at the Bethany Swedes and by scores of 3-1 and 3-0.

Match One (L 3-1 at Bethany) The Lady Builders were presented with a unique situation on Saturday, starting with a road game against the Swedes to start the day off before getting back on the road to head over to Hillsboro. Bethany started off the match with a 25-17 win, posting a 29 percent hitting effort on their way to a 1-0 lead in the match. Southwestern committed three more errors than their counterpart and hit just nine kills on 32 attempts in the opening game.

It was a much cleaner outcome for the Lady Builders in set two as they limited their miscues to just two along with helping force nine from the home team. Southwestern finished the second frame with a hitting percentage of 36 percent, converting 13 kills on one fewer attempt than the Swedes. The Lady Builders evened the match with a 25-17 victory of their own.

Southwestern and Bethany went even the rest of the way in terms of errors, but the Swedes were able to produce more efficiently on offense, taking sets three and four by scores of 25-18 and 25- 19. The Lady Builders hung around late in both games, with Bethany earning eight of the final 11 points in set three to take the 2-1 lead in the match. In the fourth game, the Swedes fended off a late rally by secure five of the final seven points scored.

It was a balanced attack for Southwestern in this one, led by eight kills from both Sydney Morris (FR/Garland, Texas) and Elizabeth Borgelt (FR/Tulsa, Okla.). Faith Smith (FR/Port Orchard, Wash.) was close behind with seven kills, while Cierra Harrison (FR/Cheney, Kan.) finished with six. Sydney Hancock (SR/Denver, Colo.) tallied 16 assists offensively, while Sophia Wicker (FR/Woodstock, Ill.) was the team’s top defender with 15 digs.

Match Two (L 3-0 at Tabor) Following their match at Bethany, the team hopped back on the bus and headed over to Hillsboro to take on the first-place Bluejays. In their first meeting earlier this season, Tabor was victorious 3-0 but all three of the sets were decided by two points. Things remained the same in the opening game of this one, with the Bluejays squeaking out a 25-23 win due to a plus-five margin in kills.

The home team continued to play well late in each of the next two sets, pulling out wins of 25-21 and 25-17 to claim the match at 3-0. The Lady Builders and Bluejays hit identical at 4.4 percent in game two, but Tabor came through down the stretch securing four of the final six points scored to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. In set three, the Bluejays outhit the Lady Builders 12 kills to eight on their way to wrapping up the 3-0 win.

Morris led Southwestern in kills for the second straight contest, finishing again with eight. Harrison was next with six. Maela Stevens (SO/Belle Plaine, Kan.) and Hancock each posted 11 assists in the match, while Wicker grabbed a match-high 20 digs.

With the results, Southwestern drops to 6-15 overall and 6-8 in KCAC play. The team will return home for a triangular match against Bethany and Friends on Saturday, February 27th. First match is scheduled for 3:00 pm from inside Stewart Field House.
