The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and its members use sport as a vehicle for character development and administer programs and championships in proper balance with overall educational experience. In 2000, the organization reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspect of sport. Through “Champions of Character,” the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student athlete, coach, official, and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: Respect, Integrity, Responsibili- ty, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship. The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference is a prominent inter- collegiate athletics conference comprised of the following ten outstand- ing independent or private institutions of higher education in the state: Bethany College, , , Kansas Wesleyan University, McPherson College, , Southwestern College, Sterling College, and . Every so often, there are nights in athletics that are, well, just special. Not just because of a highlight play, comeback win, or something along those lines. They say records are meant to be broken. Now that may be true, but when it happens, nine times out of ten you are still left in awe. That’s exactly how people felt as they left Hahn Gymnasium on January 22, 2014. People came to Lindsborg in hopes of watching another Swedes victory, or possibly they were there to support the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser. Whatever the case, the fans and media got a chance to witness something special. It was a night which the Swedes won easily over the Bethel College Threshers, 112-77. But one thing stuck out among all the rest: the play of senior guard Idris Ibn Idris. He led the way with 46 points and set the Bethany basketball record for most points scored in a single game. It was a night to remember for Swedes basketball fans. It seemed as though anything he put up was going in. The record was previously held by Ken McDonald at 43. McDonald was the record holder since the 1988-1989 season. “The Bethel game in Hahn Gym was special as it was our Coaches vs Cancer suits and sneakers game. To top it off, Idris had an incredible record setting game, which was more the norm than the exception for him all season long. Idris was also his usual humble self which made him a pleasure to coach and endeared him to our fans,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Clair Oleen. Idris started his scoring early, and he continued to score often. Idris scored 30 of his 46 points in the first half, and still found a way to dish out four assists. He was 12 out of 16 in the first half from the floor, and three of six from the line. He continued strong in the second half, making five of eight second half shots, including three more triples. The final stat line for Idris was: 46 points on 24 shots, while shooting 70 percent from the field (17-24) and six of ten from the free throw line. He grabbed seven rebounds, had five assists, and four steals. This wasn’t the only scoring outburst or record by Idris or the Swedes last season. The team was one of the most proficient scoring teams in the history of Bethany basketball. They ranked fourth in NAIA Division II for scoring offense per game with 89.52 points per contest, which was also first in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). The Swedes scored a total of 2,775 points in the season, which was 21st in the NAIA. They made 7.77 three point field goals per game (241 total), and shot 48 percent from the floor. Both categories ranked them 24th in the nation. Individually, Idris ranked second in NAIA Division II in points per game. He averaged 27.323 and scored a total of 847, third in the nation for total scoring. He also ranked in the top ten for three point field goal percentage shooting better than 45 percent from behind the ark. The Swedes were on a record breaking tear this year, and it seemed like any given night the record book would be rewritten. For example, Bethany College now holds the NAIA Division II team record for the largest margin of victory in an overtime game. The Swedes scored 23 points on December 14, to beat Southwestern College by 17 points, 108-91. Bethany had the best scoring average per game in program history. They averaged 89.5 points per game, with the total of 2,775 points over 31 games. The previous record was held by the 1988-1989 team that averaged 88.1 points per game. The 2013-2014 team holds the Bethany record for most field goals made and attempted in a season. The Swedes made 969 to best the previous record of 918, set again by the 1988-1989 team. They attempted 2,024 field goals last season, 498 more than the previous record in the 1968-1969 season of 1,526 shots. As a team, the Swedes had more free throws attempted than any other year. They shot 834 free throws last season compared to the previous high of 773 in the 1988-1989 season. They also made more, 596, than the 88-89 season, 516. Bethany pulled down 1,101 rebounds in 2013-2014. Before that, the highest was 980 in the 1970-1971 season. Bethany also set a new record for the most three-point field goals made in a game in a 106-103 win over Panhandle State on November 19, 2013. The Swedes made 16 of the 28 they attempted in the overtime win. “While this team won 20 games and was a record setting offensive team that was fun to watch, we were extremely disappointed we did not return to the National Tournament. We galantly fought through major injuries all season long, including two starters the last two weeks and during post season. However, the bottom line that ultimately kept us from returning to Branson was our deficient defense. We will be much improved defensively in 2014-15,” added Oleen. Idris set eight individual records, and Jordan Bieberle added another. Bieberle is the new record holder of most three-point field goals made in a game after he knocked down eight against Tabor College at a home game on December 7, 2013. Besides the single game record setting night against Bethel, Idris was a scoring machine. He has the best scoring average during a season, 27.3 points per game, and the best scoring average over his whole career, 25.6 points per game. Dale Gorsky held the average during a career with 18.7, and Jerry Krone scored 539 points in the 1978 season, an average of 23.4 points per game. Idris attempted and made more field goals than anyone in Bethany history. He made 284 of his 511, which was better than the 221 of Kirk Swenson in 1989-1990, and more than the 387 of Swenson in the same season. Idris also set the records for most free throws attempted in a season, 289, and most free throws made in a season, 224. Gorsky previously held the record for most free throws in a season with 204 in 1969-1970, and Krone made 163 free throws in 1977-1978. Idris finished the season with 874 points, and finished his career as a Swede with 1,000 points. Idris was a KCAC 1st team All-Conference award winner, a second team NAIA All-American, and also had the opportunity to play in the first ever NAIA All-Star game in Kansas City. Kirby Hawkins was named to the third team. Vincent Roybal received Honorable Mention in the KCAC. Derek Knopp was the Swedes KCAC Champion of Character and also was a NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete. 2013-14 Season Stats

The Bethany College men’s basketball team is coming off of one of the most successful season in recent years both as a team and individuals. The Swedes eclipsed the 20-win mark for the first time in the past 10 seasons. A season ago, the Swedes were known for their offensive explosiveness, but the team will look to the other end of the court for this season’s success.

“We have a long and athletic team all across the board,” said Head Cach Clair Oleen. “The expectation is to use our length, athleticism, physical con- ditioning and work ethic to create a lot of offense with our defensive pressure. The result will be a very high octane, up tempo style of basketball.”

As a team Bethany was fourth in the NAIA in scoring offense per game (89.516) and was first in the KCAC. They were 21st in scoring offense with 2775 points on the season. The Swedes made 7.774 three-point field goals per game which was 24th in the nation, they made 241 which was 27th in the nation, and Bethany ranked 28th in the nation by making 36.3 percent of their three-point attempts. As a team Bethany made 47.9 percent of their shots which was second in the KCAC and 24th in the nation.

Bethany set or broke nine team records while also having nine individual records broke through the 2013-2014 season. The Swedes also hold the NAIA Division II record for the largest margin of victory in an overtime game after the Swedes beat the Moundbuilders. Bethany scored 23 points on December 14, held Southwestern College to six points and won 108-91 in a 17-point OT win.

The Swedes will return only five players that saw playing time last year, as they lost a good amount, nine letterwinners total. Bethany will be with- out Idris Ibn Idris, Kirby Hawkins, Vincent Roybal, Jordan Bieberle, and Dwight Abad. All have moved on from the Bethany basketball program or have used up their playing eligibility. The five players accounted for the majority of the Swedes points last season, and they were the top five points per game averages on the team.

Without those five players, the Swedes will have a new look. Bethany will rely on a new five who have KCAC experience. The Swedes will look to guards Larry McLin, Nathan Coleman, Devin Smith, and big men Alex Loul and Brandon Huskey to stabilize a new and young group of players.

Coleman is the lone starter returning from last season’s squad. He averaged eight points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game and also shot 47 percent from the floor. In addition to a bigger offensive role, Coleman will again be counted on to be a key defender. Last season he had the challenge of guarding every position on the floor at one point or another.

“There are five returners who played significant roles last season and are good athletes. All five have continued to develop their skill sets as basket- ball players and will have the opportunity to have even more significant roles on this year’s team. The five are doing a tremendous job of leading this team. They are bringing us to a much higher level of work ethic while engraining us in a tremendous culture of defense, work ethic, and account- ability,” added Coach Oleen.

Loul and McLin earned considerable minutes, especially near the end of last season. McLin averaged 3.3 points a game and 2.1 rebounds per game. Loul added 2.4 points per game and another 1.5 rebounds while shooting over 50 percent from the field. Huskey also shot over 50 percent from the field and added 1.5 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game coming off of the bench. Smith added 1.1 points per game and a rebound per game for the Swedes.

The Swedes brought in length and athleticism to help with their defense. Coach Oleen and Associate Head Coach Denver Cobb are optimistic for newcomers Jonathan Gidson, a junior from Denver, Colo., Cody Harris, a junior from Rapid City, S.D., Gary Jones, a sophomore forward from Kansas City, Kan., and Alex Peterson, a freshman forward from Overland Park, Kan.

Coach Oleen said later, “We have added some experienced newcomers who come to us with some very good credentials. The have joined our leadership team in bringing an incredible work ethic and defensive culture to Bethany basketball. They too, are accountable and unselfish and have blended very well with this team in regard to chemistry.”

Bethany hits the court for their alumni scrimmage on Saturday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m. The Swedes officially open their season at home on Saturday, November 1 against Avila University, Kansas City. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. 2014-15 Men’s Roster

Clair Oleen-Head Coach- 22nd Season Alma Mater: Bethany College

The 2014-2015 season is Head Coach Clair Oleen’s 36th season on the side- lines in Hahn Gymnasium. He spent two years as the late George Stephens’ assistant coach (earning KCAC titles in 1980 and 1981) and 12 years as the head women’s basketball coach (winning 208 games, one KCAC title, 10 NAIA play-off appearances and numerous national rankings).

Oleen now enters his 22nd season as head coach of the men’s basketball program.

During his time as men’s coach, the Swedes have won 287 games, won three KCAC Tournament Championships, earned several national rankings and qualified for three NAIA National Tournaments. The 2003 team played in the NAIA National Championship game, finishing as national run- ners-up. That year Oleen was honored as the NAIA Division II Coach of the Year, while the team was honored by then Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius, with a state proclamation on April 10, 2003. Most recently the 2013-14 team won 20 games and received votes several weeks in the NAIA National Poll.

Coach Oleen is the all-time coaching wins leader at Bethany for both women’s basketball (208 wins) and men’s basketball (287 wins) as he approaches the 500 win mark at Bethany with a total of 495 wins entering the 2014-15 season. Prior to the 2013-14 season Coach Oleen ranked 8th in NAIA Division II for college head coaching wins among the active men’s basketball coaches.

Oleen insists that the reason for all the Bethany wins over the years is the fact that he has been blessed with good players, good people, good assistant coaches and that he has been mentored by some of the best in- cluding Dick Nagy (former longtime University of Illinois assistant coach), the late George Stephens (former Bethany Head Coach) and Tex Winter (National Basketball Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame).

As a basketball player, Oleen was a two-year starter and a captain at Barton County Community College before he joined the Swedes at Bethany. In a Swede uniform he earned All-KCAC, All-District 10 of NAIA, and All-Lutheran honors nationally. He was a Bethany co-captain for the 1976-77 KCAC co-champion team, while he also received the Most Valuable Swede award. Following his college playing days, Oleen received numer- ous AAU basketball awards, including induction into the Kansas Independent Basketball Tournament Hall of Fame. Coach Oleen was inducted into the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Honor in 2000.

He received his bachelor’s degree in 1977 from Bethany College and his master’s in physical education from .
