MCSP ACTIVITIES IN THE REGION

In the Analamanga region, MCSP supports the regional health office (DRSP) in the implementation of the Road map , particularly for the following activities:

• Strengthen health workers’ skills in basic obstetric care, BEmONC , Essential newborn care , and post-partum family planning (with a focus on LARC) • Strengthen the technical platform of health facilities for maternal and newborns care • Strengthen the capacity to plan, monitor and evaluate maternal and neonatal health programs • Strengthen midwifery preservice education within the Faculty of Medicine of

Strengthen the skills of health workers in basic obstetric and newborn care, BEmONC, and family planning It is an important component of the program, so that health providers can provide quality services for mothers and newborns. The training/update courses are conducted using a cascade approach for improved ownership and a humanistic approach to training (on anatomical models and live cases) for improved skills. The providers are trained on the essential care for women during pregnancy and childbirth and for the newborn: • prenatal care, normal birth, • essential care for newborn, • postpartum care, • obstetric and neonatal emergencies • family planning postpartum ( including IUD insertions or implants). In the Analamanga region, training of providers began late February 2016   10 Regional Trainers have benefited from technical upgrading and training of trainers  100 Health Providers in total will receive upgrade technical skills by regional trainers. The courses are spread over five weeks, including formative supervision. Map of targeted health facilities in 2016 is on page 2

Strengthen the technical platform of health facilities for maternal and newborns care

To enable health workers to practice learned skills, MCSP provides the facilities with basic equipment for maternal and newborns care . These are basic equipment that many CSB often do not have: maternal and newborn health kits (newborn resuscitation kit, vacuum extractor for prolonged deliveries, BP apparatus, stethoscopes), and kits for postpartum family planning (insertion kits for IUDs and implants). To be able to do clinical trainings, two CSB2 (CSB2 , CSB2 ) and two CHRD (CHRD2 , CHRD1 Ambohidratrimo) have been identified and will benefit from more substantial support in terms of training and equipment so that the trainings conducted there meet standards.

Build internal capacity of health facilities to improve quality of service

MCSP also supports the printing of register and MIS tools for the reporting of data / health statistics by health facilities. Data from health facilities are important in decision making at the district and regional level. To enable CSB & CHD and improve the quality of services, MCSP supports the implementation of a quality of care dashboard that will allow the staff of each CSB to visualize the evolution of 8 key indicators and make an action plan to improve the quality of care. Real-time decision making is possible as health facilities send and receive data through an SMS platform. Data are also available for districts from a web platform.

Strengthening midwifery sector

MCSP supports midwifery preservice education to meet ICM standards (International Confederation of Midwives ) . This includes the following components: • the revision of the midwifery curricula to meet ICM standards • the technical update and effective teaching for teachers and preceptors. Twenty (20) teachers will be trained for the Faculty of Antananarivo • the implementation of a laboratory skills to enable students to master the skills on models prior to clinical trainings . • strengthening of clinical training sites to allow students to practice under proper guidance .
