WORKS IN PROGRESS: [Under Contract-Ohio State University Press] Virginia Woolf, Jane Ellen Harrison, and the Spirit of Modernist Classicism. Completed manuscript. Cross-reads the work of Cambridge Classicist, Jane Ellen Harrison, with the work of Virginia Woolf to argue for a distinct feminist expansion of modernism, which I characterize as “transpersonal” in nature, a relationship of shared objectives, politics, and ideals. Publication forthcoming for Ohio State University Press’s Classical Memories/Modernist Identities Series editors at Ohio State University Press. “Girls’ School Novels as Modernist Feminist Tradition” which argues that three novels, Antonia White’s Frost in May; Kate O’Brien’s The Land of Spices; and Rosemary Manning’s The Chinese Garden comprise a modernist, feminist tradition as an alternative to the universal coming-of-age boy school stories, such as James Joyce’s Dubliners, commonly taught, respected, and learned in undergraduate classrooms today. Article currently under submission for The Symonds Prize in Gender and Sexuality Studies (December 2012). 1924: A Year in the Life of Virginia Woolf. I am currently working on a non-fiction book project for a general audience. This is a micro-history of a single year, which reads 1924 as a fulcrum year for Woolf, whose creativity was decisively fuelled and furthered by her own contemporary times. Formal proposal has been completed and is currently under review with a literary agent. Intensive work will begin Spring 2013. 1 | Page The White Narcissus: Virginia Woolf and Sigmund Freud in an Age of Insanity. This project, currently in the research stage, uses Virginia Woolf’s 28 January 1939 meeting with Sigmund Freud as a springboard for discussing Woolf, Freud, and their views and theories about each other and about the rise of political fascism in the late 1930’s. Seeking grant support by Summer 2013. “Of the Nymph and the Noun: Jane Harrison, Janet Case, and Virginia Woolf’s Greek Education,” which explores the pedagogical connections between Harrison, Case, and Woolf and their respective and related re-reading of the Greeks. Currently under review at The Philological Review (since January 2012). Three Waste Lands (with Jane Marcus). New feminist interpretations and annotations of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Hope Mirrlees’ Paris, and Nancy Cunard’s Parallax. I recently received a third PSC Grant for completing this project. We have a draft of our introduction. Annotations are nearly completed. I used the grant to research the newly created Hope Mirrlees Archive at Newnham College, Cambridge University, in Summer 2011. Virginia Woolf October 1924, the first English translation of The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum, a 17th century Russian text, was published to good reviews as the 41st imprint of The Hogarth Press.1 Avvakum joined an already impressive list of Russian titles at Hogarth, the press founded and managed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf.2 November 1926, the young publishing firm - The Nonesuch Press - issued its 35th publication, The Book of the Bear.3 Nonesuch shared neither Hogarth’s interest in Russian texts nor new authors.4 The Book of the Bear is the only translation from the Russian and one of only three children’s books among Nonesuch’s first hundred titles. Avvakum and The Book of the Bear were anomalous ventures for both these private Presses, differing though their practices and objectives were. This essay charts the course of their translator - classical archeologist turned historical anthropologist - Jane Ellen Harrison (1850-1928), and her role in facilitating a connection between the worlds of privileged Bloomsbury and impoverished Russian refugees.5 The story of how these charming, diminutive books came into the world offers a glimpse into the stark divergence between the social reality of Britain - sometimes viewed as relatively unchanged after the horrors of the Great War 6 - and that of the Russian intellectuals living in what they still believed to be a temporary exile after the cataclysmic events of revolution and civil war.

    LYRIC NARRATIVE IN LATE MODERNISM: VIRGINIA WOOLF, H.D., GERMAINE DULAC, AND WALTER BENJAMIN DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Cheryl Lynn Hindrichs, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Professor Sebastian Knowles, Adviser Approved by Professor Brian McHale ______________________________ Professor James Phelan Adviser Graduate Program in English ABSTRACT This dissertation redefines lyric narrative—forms of narration that fuse the associative resonance of lyric with the linear progression of narrative—as both an aesthetic mode and a strategy for responding ethically to the political challenges of the period of late modernism. Underscoring the vital role of lyric narrative as a late- modernist technique, I focus on its use during the period 1925-1945 by British writer Virginia Woolf, American expatriate poet H.D., French filmmaker Germaine Dulac, and German critic Walter Benjamin. Locating themselves as outsiders free to move across generic and national boundaries, each insisted on the importance of a dialectical vision: that is, holding in a productive tension the timeless vision of the lyric mode and the dynamic energy of narrative progression. Further, I argue that a transdisciplinary, feminist impulse informed this experimentation, leading these authors to incorporate innovations in fiction, music, cinema, and psychoanalysis. Consequently, I combine a narratological and historicist approach to reveal parallel evolutions of lyric narrative across disciplines—fiction, criticism, and film. Through an interpretive lens that uses rhetorical theory to attend to the ethical dimensions of their aesthetics, I show how Woolf’s, H.D.’s, Dulac’s, and Benjamin’s lyric narratives create unique relationships with their audiences.

She achieved a measure of celebrity as a result, attested to by the photograph of her, taken with her dog, published in a 1973 Travel and Leisure magazine with the caption: ‘A frequent guest over two decades, poet and novelist Hope Mirrlees and her pug, Fred, are very much at home in the foyer of the Basil’, a Knightsbridge hotel. i Mirrlees also wrote two other novels, a biography, several translations and a book of poetry. Early in her career she wrote what has only recently been hailed as ‘modernism's lost masterpiece’ ii a long, experimental poem Paris (1919), one of the first works published by Virginia and Leonard Woolf’s Hogarth Press.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] The Modernist roman à clef and Cultural Secrets, or I Know That You Know That I Know That You Know Melissa Boyde OMAN À CLEF, a French term meaning ‘novel with a key’, refers to fictional works in which actual people or events can be identified by a knowing Rreader, typically a member of a coterie. Seventeenth century writer and salonnière Madeleine de Scudéry (1607–1701) is attributed as the innovator of the genre creating it to disguise from the general reader the public figures whose political actions and ideas formed the basis of her fictional narratives. In taking up the genre a number of modernist women writers, including Djuna Barnes and Hope Mirrlees, reflected and reinterpreted this era in the early twentieth century avant-garde salon culture of Paris. From early on the salon had developed into ‘a tool of survival in a time of adversity’ (Kale 142) so it is no surprise that salons and coteries in modernist Paris, such as those of Gertrude Stein and Natalie Barney, flourished in a climate where lesbian/queer identities were increasingly being rendered secret in dominant medical and legal discourses.
