Sehr gedehnt, mit schmerzvollem Ausdruck DIRECTION CORNELIUS MEISTER COR STEFAN DOHR 2 À l’origine, Stefan Dohr apprend l’alto et, après avoir entendu le célèbre corniste Hermann Baumann, il en conclut que « ce cor sonne mieux que mon alto ». Aujourd’hui, Stefan est le cor solo de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin. À Strasbourg, il montrera toute l’étendue de son talent en interprétant Mozart. Cornelius Meister dirigera l’une des plus belles œuvres de Zemlinsky que l’on entend peu en concert, Die Seejungfrau (La Sirène) d’après le conte d’Andersen. Armin Jordan l’avait révélée au public strasbourgeois en 2002. 3 Smetana fut l’un des artisans de l’émergence d’une musique natio- nale tchèque et signa l’un des pre- miers chœurs en langue tchèque : La Chanson tchèque en 1860. Ce musicien-citoyen conçut son métier comme une mission patriotique, se dévouant à l’enseignement et, à partir de 1861, exclusivement au Théâtre national. -

Bernard Rands Cello Concerto No. 1
PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Bernard Rands Born March 2, 1934, Sheffield, England. Currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts, and Chicago, Illinois. Cello Concerto No. 1 Rands composed this cello concerto in 1996, on a commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the seventieth birthday of Mstislav Rostropovich, to whom it is dedicated. The first performances were given by Rostropovich and the Boston Symphony, with Seiji Ozawa conducting, on April 3, 4, and 5, 1997, at Symphony Hall in Boston. The orchestra consists of three flutes, two alto flutes and piccolo, two oboes and english horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones and tuba, two harps, piano, timpani, percussion (vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, tubular bells, bongos, triangle, medium and large tam-tams, bass drum, almglocken), and strings. Performance time is approximately twenty-seven minutes. Concertos are often written for a particular performer. Sometimes that player is the composer himself, writing for his own instrument—Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, Bartók, and Stravinsky, for example, all composed piano concertos which they introduced themselves. Many concertos were written for virtuoso soloists—Brahms’s Violin Concerto was composed for Joseph Joachim and Elgar’s for Fritz Kreisler; Copland’s Clarinet Concerto was designed with Benny Goodman in mind; Ravel’s Left-Hand Piano Concerto was written on a commission from Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in World War I. Like Britten’s Symphony for Cello and Orchestra and Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, this cello concerto by Bernard Rands was composed for Mstislav Rostropovich, one of the most formidable performers of our time. -

Beethoven arrived in Vienna in 1792 and qUickly became popular in musical circles for his quick wit and an ability to improvise at the piano that was the envy of many. By 1796, he had established himself sufficiently to have the confidence to write two celio sonatas and dedicate them to none other than Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia. We are hearing the first of these two sonatas this evening. The opening Adagio evinces searching and yearning, the ensuing Allegro apositive release from these doubts. Beethoven relished pianistic virtuosity as ayoung man, and he doesn't spare himself here. Both this, and the lively second movement, are the work of ayoung spirit not yet aware of his destiny. The Sonata in DMajor, Opus 102 #2, is of another world. Beethoven's deafness had manifested itself as early as 1797, perhaps following about with rheu matic fever. -

Drei Werke des Fin de Siècle stehen heute auf dem Pro- gramm. Mit Maurice Ravels Menuet antique erklingt ein historischer Tanz, gekleidet in ein klanglich verführerisches Orchestergewand. In Claude Debussys sinfonischen Skiz- zen La Mer verwandelt sich die Natur selbst in Musik: das Orchester murmelt, wogt und rauscht, glitzert, gleißt und blendet, um das Spiel der Wellen und den Dialog von Wind und Meer hörbar zu machen. -

Composed over a period spanning four decades, IntermissiON the cycle chronicles critical points of the composer’s life and String Quartet no. 3, op. 19 (1924) career. Following the Romantically Brahmsian First Quartet, the Allegretto: Gemachlich, innig bewegt Second, written in response to a spurned marriage proposal, Thema mit Variationen: Geheimnisvoll bewegt, nich zu schnell – Variationen I–VII Romanze: Sehr mäßige Achtel, Andante sostenuto NCHE CONCERTS turns turbulent. In his Third Quartet, Zemlinsky departs from Burleske: Sehr lebhaft, Allegro moderato A his earlier tonal language towards an Expressionist idiom String Quartet no. 4, op. 25 (1936) L influenced by his famous brother-in-law, Arnold Schoenberg.
