Crusading, the Military Orders, and Sacred Landscapes in the Baltic, 13Th – 14Th Centuries ______
TERRA MATRIS: CRUSADING, THE MILITARY ORDERS, AND SACRED LANDSCAPES IN THE BALTIC, 13TH – 14TH CENTURIES ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the School of History, Archaeology and Religion Cardiff University ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in History & Welsh History (2018) ____________________________________ by Gregory Leighton Abstract Crusading and the military orders have, at their roots, a strong focus on place, namely the Holy Land and the shrines associated with the life of Christ on Earth. Both concepts spread to other frontiers in Europe (notably Spain and the Baltic) in a very quick fashion. Therefore, this thesis investigates the ways that this focus on place and landscape changed over time, when crusading and the military orders emerged in the Baltic region, a land with no Christian holy places. Taking this fact as a point of departure, the following thesis focuses on the crusades to the Baltic Sea Region during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It considers the role of the military orders in the region (primarily the Order of the Teutonic Knights), and how their participation in the conversion-led crusading missions there helped to shape a distinct perception of the Baltic region as a new sacred (i.e. Christian) landscape. Structured around four chapters, the thesis discusses the emergence of a new sacred landscape thematically. Following an overview of the military orders and the role of sacred landscpaes in their ideology, and an overview of the historiographical debates on the Baltic crusades, it addresses the paganism of the landscape in the written sources predating the crusades, in addition to the narrative, legal, and visual evidence of the crusade period (Chapter 1). -
The Relics of St Barbara at Althaus Kulm
Zapiski Historyczne t. 85, 2020, z. 1, s. 5 – 50 ISSN 0044-1791 http://dx.doi.org/10.15762/ZH.2020.01 GREGORY LEIGHTON* https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4203-2313 The Relics of St Barbara at Althaus Kulm: History, Patronages, and Insight into the Teutonic Order and the Christian Population in Prussia (Thirteenth–Fifteenth Centuries) Abstract This article summarizes the history of the relics of St Barbara in Althaus Kulm (Staro- gród Chełmiński), a topic with extensive research in Polish and German circles, but only recently addressed by scholarship in English. It begins with an overview of the relics’ his- tory and a summary of St Barbara’s vita, pointing out the quick rise in her cult in the Teu- tonic Order’s Prussian territory (Ordensland). Following this, it assesses the function of the relics through three lenses: warfare, daily life, and as a symbol of the Order’s power using three methodological frameworks. These are hierophany (manifestations of the sacred) for warfare, naming practices for studying the impact of St Barbara on the local population, and as a reflection of the Order’s territorial power (Landesherrschaft). The article ultimately demonstrates that the relics were a significant element of the multifaceted structure of re- ligious life in medieval Prussia, both within and outside of the Teutonic Order. Appended to the text are two previously unpublished accounts of the relics of St Barbara and their arrival in Althaus, demonstrating the reputation of the shrine not just in the Ordensland, but within Christendom. It concludes with a summary of the research findings, and a con- sideration of these findings in light of more ‘recent’ interpretations of the Teutonic Order and the Prussian Crusades. -

The High Castle in Marienburg (Pol. Malbork) has been continuously arousing scientific interest since the 57th century studies and publications by Ferdinand von 9uast i Conrad Steinbrecht. This has been greatly stimulated by renovation and reconstruction works conducted in changing historical circumstances since early 57th century (F. Gilly, C. Steinbrecht, B. Schmid) and giving testimony to the changing conservators’ attitudes and the understanding of original substance. An unfading interest in the castle and ever dynamically growing scope of modern knowledge on this monument resulted undoubtedly from the works on rebuilding the castle undertaken after 57BF (M. Kilarski). Vast contribution to the progress in the knowledge on the castle was made by an interdisciplinary conservation and research group who were active at the castle in the years KPPV–KPPZ, 5 and who conducted studies on the north wing of the High Castle. The climax of the post-war restoration was the reconstruction of castle church of Our Lady, St Ann’s Chapel and a figure of the Malbork Giant – arousing great interest but also sig- nificant controversies. -

FOREWORD It is worthwhile spending a moment to consider the problem which emerged after the conclusion of the second world war. It concerns the naming of the part of the former territory of Prusia, which was incorporated into post-war Poland. In view of the unfortunate traditions of German Prussianism and the associated worst possible memories, nobody wished to call this territory Prussia although it was to a substantial degree still inhabited by the indigenous descendants of the ancient Prusai, who saw no need to leave the land of their forefathers and talked of themselves us “ We are not Germans but we are also not Poles, we are locals”. After the war Stalin carried out another successive crime by ordering the deportation to Germany tens of thousands the descendants of the Prus people from the territory annexed by the USSR, the so called Kaliningrad region. -

ZAPISKI HISTORYCZNE — TOM LXXX — ROK 2015 Zeszyt 4 http://dx.doi.org/10.15762/ZH.2015.55 MACIEJ DORNA (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) ABOUT THE DATE WHEN THE FOUNDATION PRIVILEGE WAS GRANTED TO CHEŁMNO AND TORUŃ Key words: diplomatics, the Chełmno privilege, Kulmer Handfeste, the Teutonic Order, Chełmno Land “Acta sunt hec in Culmine anno incarnacionis dominice millesimo ducente simo tricesimo tercio, quinto Kalendas Januarii” – despite the fact that the authors of the foundation privilege for Chełmno and Toruń used this formula to clearly define the date when the document was issued, it lost its original clarity since, over time, the style of defining the beginning of a year which was used to date the document had been forgotten1. As a result, historiographers have not managed to generate one consistent point of view in relation to the issue of the Chełmno foundation privilege which, as we know, may be dated to 28 December 1232 (if the Nativity method was used), or to 28 December 1233 (if the writers used the Cir cumcision style or the Annunciation style). Among scholars, the opinion has invariably prevailed that the latter date is cor rect2. However, the recent attempt to revise this point of view by Marc Löwener has 1 Cited after Preussisches Urkundenbuch. Politische Abtheilung, Bd. 1, hrsg. v. The Statutes of the Teutonic Knights: A Study of Religious Chivalry Abstract From the Preface: The purpose of this study is to examine the role of the religious military orders, and of the Teutonic Knights in particular, within the process of change in developing the concept of a religious and a Christian warrior during the Crusades, or, in other words, how the existing Latin ideal of religious retreat was adapted, blended and attached to the chivalric image of Western Europe in the Holy Land, as reflected in the statutes of the Teutonic Knights. For this purpose the statutes of the other two prominent religious military orders, the Knights Templars and the Knights Hospitallers, and also the Rules and Constitutions of other contemporary religious orders are compared with, and studied as possible sources of, the statutes of the Teutonic Knights. Also the organization and membership of the Teutonic Order are described and analyzed. Basic to all this is the first English translation of the statutes, the Book of the Order, made from the German text of 1264, found in the oldest extant manuscript. -

ORDINE Dei CAVALIERI TEUTONICI E L’Ospedale Di S
