And I thank everyone who helped achieve this. Off the field, we had an excellent result with sponsorship and fundraising this year. We are very thankful to our loyal group of sponsors: Scarborough Toyota, Sports Specialists, Floreat Physio, MXT Tax for their continued support to the Club. The money raised from our fundraising initiatives this year was put towards the installation of air conditioning in the Clubrooms, synthetic wicket repairs, purchasing an additional sea container for equipment storage and, with the help of some generous part funding by Life members, manufacturing and delivering some new sightscreens. On the field, we also tasted success. One of our key objectives this year was the return of our top team to 1st Grade, which they achieved in emphatic fashion, beating Bassendean comprehensively in the Grand Final. This achievement was master-minded by the 2nd Grade Captain Wade Spilcker, while his long term lieutenant Shane Properjohn achieved his 200th game milestone for the Club during that memorable grand final match. Congratulations to all members of the squad, who all contributed throughout the season to achieving the ultimate prize. We also made great progress in the T20 competition this year, reaching the final but losing out to a well prepared and highly competitive Bentley side in the final. We knocked off a few highly fancied sides from 1st grade on our way to the T20 final, which can only help build our confidence for next season in the top flight. Special mention must also be made to 4th grade who also reached their Grand Final under the shrewd leadership of Jeff Booth. In particular their win in the semi-finals was well-earned and deserved. Unfortunately, our batting let us down on the day when it really mattered. However, it was a fine effort to reach the GF. The Senior Men were lucky to secure the services of two very talented English cricketers this year in Fred Daeche-Marshall and Mark Bott. Fred performed superbly for us this season and Mark also produced the goods when it really mattered in both the 2 day and T20 grand finals. We hope that both might return to us next season. For the females this season, we did really well to get all three teams into Grand Finals, even if the pink balls proved a little difficult to master. The Girls U17’s unfortunately lost their Grand Final, and our Women’s A grade lost their Grand Final for second successive year, which was disappointing. Let’s make sure this makes us even more determined to go one better next season! On a brighter note, however, the U15’s managed to secure their Premiership. Well done girls! No Junior Boys teams made finals this year. Whilst it is acknowledged that the approach of several Junior teams this year was to emphasise equal participation by all players, rather than a win at all cost attitude, we should aim to have at least one team making the finals next season. Our In2Cricket (age 5 yrs to 8yrs) numbers were excellent this year (120 this year, up from 60 last season). Thanks to those people who helped in the smooth running of the Club this season. To all the volunteers, coaches, managers, administrators, committee members, selectors, captains, a huge thank you for your efforts. In particular, I’d like to thank John Lucas, aka Mr Subiaco Marist Cricket Club, whose unswerving dedication and enthusiasm for the Club is incredible. Finally, congratulations to Ross Properjohn and Justin McGovern, who were both elected as Life Members of the SMCC this year after providing many dedicated years of service to the Club. • Ian Salisbury (England 1992 to 2001) Ian Salisbury Was a Prolific Wicket
Ian Salisbury (England 1992 to 2001) Ian Salisbury was a prolific wicket-taker in county cricket but struggled in his day job in Tests, taking only 20 wickets at large expense. Wisden claimed the leg-spinner’s googly could be picked because of a higher arm action, which negated the threat he posed. Keith Medlycott, his Surrey coach, felt Salisbury was under-bowled and had his confidence diminished by frequent criticism from people who had little understanding of a leggie’s travails. Yet Ian was a willing performer and an excellent tourist. Salisbury’s Test career was a stop-start affair. Over more than eight years, he played in only 15 Tests. Despite these disappointments Salisbury’s determination was never in doubt. Several times as well, he showed more backbone than his supposedly superior English spin colleagues; most notably in India in early 1993. Ian Salisbury also proved to be an excellent nightwatchman, invariably making useful contributions. His Test innings as nightwatchman are shown below. WOMEN’S TWENTY20 SATURDAY MELBOURNE STARS V JANUARY 2, 2016 FACT SHEET MELBOURNE RENEGADES LIBRARY Australian Women’s Domestic Twenty20 (T20) – A Brief History Victoria Spirit (4/135) defeated the New South Wales Breakers (6/118) by 17 runs in an unofficial women’s domestic T20 match which was organised by Cricket Victoria at the Richmond Cricket Ground on December 20, 2006. Victoria batted first with player-of-the-match Catherine Fitzpatrick top scoring with 42 runs off 30 balls (1 six, 4 fours). She was supported by Sarah Edwards 37 (32 balls, 1 four) and Rachael Haynes 25 (31 balls, 3 fours). In reply for NSW Lisa Sthalekar top scored with 36 (26 balls, 6 fours) supported by Kate Blackwell 30 (22 balls, 4 fours). Vic Spirit’s Clea Smith was the only multiple wicket taker of the match with figures of 2/19 off four overs. Although she went wicketless Vic Spirit’s Catherine Fitzpatrick, was the most economical bowler of the match conceding only 14 runs from her four overs. It was the tight bowling by the Victorians that contained the New South Wales batters and won the match. In November 2007 a series of five matches were played as part of a women’s interstate T20 tournament. Each state played two matches but no final was programmed. The participating teams were New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. In the 2008/09 season the women’s domestic T20 competition was expanded with two tournaments being staged. The Women’s Interstate T20 tournament consisted of a series of five matches played by the same states that had played the previous season.

  • Decolonisation and the Imperial Cricket Conference, 1947–1965: a Study in Transnational Commonwealth History?
Decolonisation and the Imperial Cricket Conference, 1947–1965: A Study in Transnational Commonwealth History? by Usha Iyer A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire September 2013 Student Declaration Concurrent registration for two or more academic awards *I declare that while registered as a candidate for the research degree, I have not been a registered candidate or enrolled student for another award of the University or other academic or professional institution Material submitted for another award *I declare that no material contained in the thesis has been used in any other submission for an academic award and is solely my own work Signature of Candidate: Type of Award : PhD School : School of Sport, Tourism and the Outdoors Abstract The game of cricket is often discussed as an enduring legacy of the British Empire. This dissertation examines the response of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) as the official governing body of ‘international’ men’s cricket to developments related to decolonisation of the British Empire between 1947 and 1965. This was a period of intense political flux and paradigmatic shifts. This study draws on primary sources in the form of records of ICC and MCC meetings and newspaper archives, and a wide-ranging corpus of secondary sources on the history of cricket, history of the Commonwealth and transnational perspectives on history. It is the contention of this dissertation that these cricket archives have hitherto not been exploited as commentary on decolonisation or the Commonwealth. Due attention is given to familiarising the reader with the political backdrop in the Empire and Commonwealth against which the ICC is studied.

  • 285 - November 2008
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 285 - NOVEMBER 2008 Wednesday 12 November 2008 – Meeting This year’s beneficiary, JOHN CRAWLEY, makes a welcome return to the Society this evening. His first visit was in October 2005 when members enjoyed a most pleasant evening in his company. John Crawley has endeared himself to Hampshire supporters during his seven years with the County. He has reinforced his penchant for making high scores by being the only batsman in the County’s history to record two triple centuries, both at the expense of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. He made 301 not out at Trent Bridge in 2005 and then followed it up with an unbeaten 311 at The Rose Bowl a year later. Virtually all Hampshire supporters felt it was a great pity that Shane Warne declared when our speaker was tantalisingly close to Dick More’s record 316 for the County. When he last spoke to us he felt that the former innings was the best crafted and that, in respect of the latter, the emphasis had to be on winning the match, which Hampshire duly did. Moreover, he made 272 on his Hampshire debut at Canterbury in 2002; he has therefore recorded three of the six highest innings for the County. All three innings are the highest made for Hampshire in the last 70 years – a phenomenal achievement. He might even have made a triple century in the latter innings but was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end when a Shaun Udal drive was deflected on to the stumps by Min Patel.
