Research Justification The book proposes a radical transformation of existing church and training models in South African Reformed ecclesial circles. It takes the theological discussion, especially in ecclesiology, to the next level and argues for new ways to express belief in ecclesial practice. The book provides a provocative strategic vision which takes the ecclesial challenges of the twenty-first century seriously. The book will benefit not only theologians in the academy but also church leaders. Firstly, a situational analysis which focuses on the circumstances and social standing of mainstream churches in the twenty-first century, is done. Current difficulties and obstacles are identified. These can be contributed mainly to the secularisation and post-Christian tendencies of the era subsequent to the two world wars. Secondly, the responsible renewal of and much needed amendments to the structures of South African Protestant faith communities in a postmodern, postliberal, postcolonial context are proposed. The authority of Scripture and the creeds of these churches are foundational for sensible renewal. The book dialogues with the relevant existing literature as it develops its ‘missional’ approach to being church in the world today. The investigation is thorough, the argumentation sound and the book makes an original and thought-provoking contribution to the field. The contribution includes biblical perspectives on ecclesial communities, a historical overview of the growth and decline of mainstream churches, insights with regard to the available empirical data, and strategies for the future. The work attests to sound methodology and a strong theoretical foundation. Literature from various parts of the world is utilised, which provides both breadth and depth to the work. The author displays an impressive ability to integrate findings from various fields and disciplines.

For the Greek authors’ names and titles see Liddell & Scott (1996) and for the Latin ones Glare (1996). The Gospel texts translated into English were quoted on the basis of the King James Ver- sion of 1611. In some cases the Revised Standard Version of 1881 and the New American Bible of 1970 were relied on. These three translations often differ from each other considerably. Although they all, even the Catholic one, make use of the original languages rather than the Vulgate as a basis for translation, they have the tendency to read the text of the New Testament according to the current interpreta- tion and to amalgamate it with the Old, so that in critical points the newer transla- tions are overtly conflicting with the Greek original text, arbitrarily interpreting e. g. thalassa, properly ‘sea’, as lake, Christos, ‘Christ’, as Messiah, adapting the orthog- raphy of the proper names in the New Testament to those in the Old, e.g.

  • Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema Throughout North America
INTRODUCTION In December 2011, filmmaker Martin Scorsese traveled to Poland to accept an honorary doctor- al degree from The Polish National Film, Television, and Theatre School in Łódź. There, Mr. Scors- ese met with Jędrzej Sabliński (a digital restoration expert, now with DI Factory), and reviewed a list of new digital restorations of Polish films. In the months following this visit, with the help of The Film Foundation, the two men came up with the idea of a North American tour of a series of restored Polish cinema classics. From an extensive catalogue of digitally restored films, Mr. Scorsese chose twenty-one masterpieces. The Film Foundation executive director, Margaret Bodde then worked with Mr. Sabliński to develop the program and recommended Milestone Films as the North American distributor for the series. Milestone will be touring the 21-film retrospective Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema throughout North America. Premiering in New York City at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February 5th, 2014, the series features films from some of Poland’s most accom- plished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957–1987. Curated by Mr. Scorsese, each film has been digitally re-mastered and brilliantly restored on newly subtitled DCPs. The program was created and organized by Mr. Scorsese’s non-profit organization, The Film Foundation. 3 BIST, SIMPORE, TEMPORE, A STATEMENT FROM MARTIN SCORSESE Um volum, audae laccae seque natur, comnis ducienimus excest rendercillam laccupi endicit In 2011, I had the opportunity to visit the Polish National Film School in Łódź, Poland, at the atusda vitisitatur rentem vent.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION AESTHETIC UNFINALIZABILITY Narrative Irresolution at a Time of Great Conclusions The Polish science fiction writer Stanisław Lem’s novel Imaginary Magni- tude (Wielkość urojona, 1973) consists entirely of introductions to nonexistent books. “The art of writing Introductions has long demanded proper recogni- tion,” states Lem’s narrator, and he complains that contemporary art has be- come a forgery, “a promissory note without (transcendental) cover, a (counter- feit) pledge, and (unrealistic) forecast.”1 The author deems himself a “liberator” of the genre of introductions, setting beginnings free from such false promises, and his ode to introductions surfaces at a moment in Polish political history that can itself be charged as being one of “(counterfeit) pledges” and “(unrealistic) forecasts.” Poland in the late socialist era is remembered for its frequent revo- lutions and burgeoning public resistance, and yet it was still marked by an ideol- ogy of the permanence of the communist system. The end that followed nearly a half century of socialist rule, however, was not Communism fulfilled but indeed its shocking collapse. How did Polish cinema and literature figure into that uncertain moment when endings were so charged? What was the role of conclu- sions during a decades-long wait for a utopic eternity? And what happened with fictional endings at this time that itself turned out to be “the end”? I will address 1 © 2018 University of Pittsburgh Press. Corresponding with Lem’s prompt to emanci- pate introductions, artists at this time began to not only redeem beginnings but to reject narrative endings.

Outlandish Fictions: The Eighteenth-Century French Novel and Marriage on Women's Terms Abstract ABSTRACT OUTLANDISH FICTIONS: THE EIGHTEENTH-CENTRY FRENCH NOVEL AND MARRIAGE ON WOMEN'S TERMS Ekaterina R. Alexandrova Joan DeJean Focusing on plots that depict life after marriage, this dissertation studies the novel as a medium for imagining a spousal relationship transformed to promote new positive social, political, and familial roles and possibilities for women. I re-establish these fictions' thrust as primarily concerned with individual freedom and fulfillment, atherr than with affection in marriage. I begin by exploring the relationship between the rising appeal of conjugal sentiment and the novel, situating the genre within the general context of social and political shift in eighteenth-century France. Viewing emergent subversive marriage plots in light of the founding seventeenth-century tradition tying the novel genre to women's interests, I suggest that attempts to contain fictions deemed outlandish" " may have warped our present vision of the "heroine's plot," or the range of roles and experiences imagined for women by Enlightenment novelists.

2 POLISH CINEMA of DIGITALLY RESTORED MASTERPIECES MASTERPIECES RESTORED DIGITALLY CLASSICS INTRODUCTION Since the Polish Film School cinema has become the exceptional trademark of Polish culture. Throughout the years behind the Iron Curtain Polish filmmakers proved many times that despite the isolation they were still the citizens of the world, who significantly contributed to the discussion of its condition through their output. Today their films are an important part of Polish culture. For years, they have been shaping our national identity, raising important existential questions, and uniting us around certain values. They have also brought on the social, political and moral changes and encouraged us to act. We owe them successes at international film festivals as well as rendering the Polish school of cinematographers famous.
