Outlandish Fictions: The Eighteenth-Century French Novel and Marriage on Women's Terms Abstract ABSTRACT OUTLANDISH FICTIONS: THE EIGHTEENTH-CENTRY FRENCH NOVEL AND MARRIAGE ON WOMEN'S TERMS Ekaterina R. Alexandrova Joan DeJean Focusing on plots that depict life after marriage, this dissertation studies the novel as a medium for imagining a spousal relationship transformed to promote new positive social, political, and familial roles and possibilities for women. I re-establish these fictions' thrust as primarily concerned with individual freedom and fulfillment, atherr than with affection in marriage. I begin by exploring the relationship between the rising appeal of conjugal sentiment and the novel, situating the genre within the general context of social and political shift in eighteenth-century France. Viewing emergent subversive marriage plots in light of the founding seventeenth-century tradition tying the novel genre to women's interests, I suggest that attempts to contain fictions deemed outlandish" " may have warped our present vision of the "heroine's plot," or the range of roles and experiences imagined for women by Enlightenment novelists. Chapter 1 examines how specific changes in marital legislation wrought by the centralizing French state progressively limited women's legal and social prerogatives, showing that the novel of marriage engaged with these concerns from the outset through a study of Lafayette's La Princesse de Clèves (1678). Subsequent chapters consider novels that envision marriage as a platform for societal transformation. In Chapter 2, I compare fictional utopian communities created through the heroine's conjugal union: the contained patriarchal autarky of Rousseau's La Nouvelle Héloïse (1761) and the expanding matriarchy of Le Prince de Beaumont's La Nouvelle Clarice (1767). Chapter 3 analyzes Riccoboni's portrayal of the platonic marriage of M. and Mme de Monglas in Lettres de Vallière (1772), an explicitly aristocratic vision of the ideal matrimonial relationship that insists on the fundamental importance of women's control of their body and their sexuality by privileging friendship and arranged marriage over the destructive forces of romantic passion. Finally, the mise-en-abîme of reading's effect on the conjugal relationship of the heroines of Charrière's Lettres de Mistriss Henley (1784) and Montolieu's Caroline de Lichtfield (1786), interrogates the genre's potential influence on marriage. The dissertation draws attention to eighteenth-century novels that have to date been understudied, and proposes new readings of prominent Enlightenment fictions that foreground questions of authority, the evolution of family relations, and women's roles in the private and public sphere.     AIEE ASSOCIATION INTERCOMMUNALE POUR L'EPURATION DES EAUX USEES COSSONAY - PENTHAZ – PENTHALAZ DAILLENS - BETTENS La station d'épuration de l'AIEE, qui collecte les eaux usées de Penthaz, Cossonay, Penthalaz, Daillens et Bettens a été mise en service en 1972. A ce jour la commune de Bettens n'est toujours pas raccordée à la STEP La station est sur la commune de Penthaz. L'AIEE est dirigée par un comité de direction composé de 3 membres et d'un secrétaire comptable. Le conseil intercommunal de l'AIEE, composé de conseillers municipaux et communaux des 4 communes, ratifie les décisions du comité de direction. L'exploitation de la STEP est assurée par un opérateur à plein temps et son remplaçant. Mise en service en 1972 la STEP avait été dimensionnée pour 8'500 habitants, alors que les trois communes fondatrices en comptaient environ 3'800. Durant 43 ans la station, qui fut dans les premières STEP intercommunales du canton, a rempli ses fonctions dans les normes de l’époque. Aujourd’hui avec 9'400 habitants raccordés elle est arrivée en bout de course et elle ne répondait plus aux normes actuelles. En 2008 le comité de direction a commandé une étude pour une nouvelle station d’épuration. La construction a débuté en 2012 et s’est faite en 3 étapes. Durant tous les travaux, l’ancienne STEP a continué de fonctionner. Ainsi la Venoge a toujours été alimentée avec de l’eau épurée Le réseau de conduites intercommunales a une longueur de 15 km pour amener les eaux usées à la STEP.

That production underlies much of this descussion of the interwoven themes of exoticism and the Jewish character as they are played out in Racine's two final plays.] Although the setting for every Racinian tragedy was spatially or temporally and culturally removed from its audience, the term "exotic" would hardly be applied to most of them. With the exception of Esther and Athalie, they lack the necessary 'local color' which might give them the aura of specificity.1 The abstract Greece of Andromaque or Phedre, for example, pales in comparison with the more circumstantial Roman world of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Titus Andronicus, to say nothing of the lavish sensual Oriental Egypt in which Gautier's Roman de la Momie luxuriates. To be sure, there are exotic elements, even in Racine's classical tragedies: heroes of Greco-Roman history and legend, melifluous place and personal names ("la fille de Minos et de Pasiphae"), strange and barbaric customs (human sacrifice in Iphigenie).     ABSTRACT Title of Document: PIETY, POLITICS, AND PATRONAGE: ISABEL CLARA EUGENIA AND PETER PAUL RUBENS’S THE TRIUMPH OF THE EUCHARIST TAPESTRY SERIES Alexandra Billington Libby, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., Department of Art History and Archeology This dissertation explores the circumstances that inspired the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia, Princess of Spain, Archduchess of Austria, and Governess General of the Southern Netherlands to commission Peter Paul Rubens’s The Triumph of the Eucharist tapestry series for the Madrid convent of the Descalzas Reales. It traces the commission of the twenty large-scale tapestries that comprise the series to the aftermath of an important victory of the Infanta’s army over the Dutch in the town of Breda. Relying on contemporary literature, studies of the Infanta’s upbringing, and the tapestries themselves, it argues that the cycle was likely conceived as an ex-voto, or gift of thanks to God for the military triumph. In my discussion, I highlight previously unrecognized temporal and thematic connections between Isabel’s many other gestures of thanks in the wake of the victory and The Triumph of the Eucharist series. I further show how Rubens invested the tapestries with imagery and a conceptual conceit that celebrated the Eucharist in ways that symbolically evoked the triumph at Breda. My study also explores the motivations behind Isabel’s decision to give the series to the Descalzas Reales. It discusses how as an ex-voto, the tapestries implicitly credited her for the triumph and, thereby, affirmed her terrestrial authority. Drawing on the history of the convent and its use by the king of Spain as both a religious and political dynastic center, it shows that the series was not only a gift to the convent, but also a gift to the king, a man with whom the Infanta had developed a tense relationship over the question of her political autonomy.
