“Kentisbury” Herd of 110 Pedigree Charolais Cattle Dispersal Sale Of The “Kentisbury” Herd of 110 Pedigree Charolais Cattle On behalf of Mr AJ Cottle FRIDAY 23RD AUGUST 2019 12.15PM following the commercial Suckler Cows EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 [email protected] www.kivells.com The Kentisbury Herd Foreword Kivells are delighted to have received instructions on behalf of Mr AJ Cottle of Ryepark Farm, Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple to disperse his entire herd of Pedigree Charolais Cattle. After moving from Longdown to the edge of Exmoor some 19 years ago, we found our Blonde Aquitaine Cattle didn’t like the Exmoor climate and so the Kentisbury Charolais herd began. We started with a few heifers from the Penpoll herd and a few cows from the Rowley herd, bought from a local farm. At Carlisle Sales we bought two good bulls, Gretnahouse Dick & Thrunton Damon. Ravensworth Edwin was another easy calving and very quiet bull that left some lovely stock. Later we bought an imported French bull Escadron, which left easy calving, well-muscled Calves. Our latest import was a bull we bought over from Ireland, Dereskit Lancelot, a bit strong, quiet and easy calving bull. We AI Heifers to bring in new bloodlines. Due to retirement and with some regret the entire Kentisbury herd is to be dispersed. Alan Cottle Herd Health The entire herd became BVD accredited in March 2014. Cows, In-Calf Heifers & Stock bulls have been vaccinated for BVD, Lepto and IBR. Bravoxin 10 was administered in November 2018, and they were IBR vaccinated on 15th February. The Bulling Heifers were vaccinated with Bravoxin 10 in November 2018. The whole herd passed their TB test on 1st July. Vet Comment As a practice we have been looking after the health of the cattle in the Kentisbury herd for 4 years. The quality of the stock in the herd is consistently excellent and are a pleasure to work with. The cattle have a very quiet temperament when being handled at TB testing and scanning etc. The herd had been accredited BVD free with the Biobest HiHealth Herdcare accreditation scheme since March 2014. The calving ease in this herd has improved greatly with no vet visits for calving being required over the last 2 years. Antibiotic usage on this farm is exceptionally low indicating very good management and resilience within the herd. Lorna Pillar, Molecare Veterinary Services Auctioneers comments This is an excellent herd of Pedigree Charolais cattle which have been carefully bred over the last nineteen years and Alan has developed a super herd with medium sized, well-muscled cows. Bulls are sold from this herd on a yearly basis and they always go away and please, with buyers coming back regularly to buy which is a huge credit to Alan’s breeding and management. We have no doubt that these commercially managed cattle will go in to new herds and perform well continuing to produce quality calves for the store, prime or bull and female breeding market. These cattle are very quiet and we highly recommend attendance at this genuine dispersal sale. REPORT BY MRS S SQUIRE, PARISH CLERK, ON ATTENDANCE AT A MEETING ON THURSDAY, 20 AUGUST 2015 AT THE GUILDHALL, BARNSTAPLE ORGANISED BY BARNSTAPLE TOWN COUNCIL TO LOOK AT POSSIBLE WAYS OF MANAGING GRASS AND VERGE CUTTING DUE TO A REDUCTION IN THIS CARRIED OUT BY DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL. Mr Will Austin, Barnstaple Town Clerk introduced himself and said that the invitation to the Meeting had been extended to all Parish and Town Clerk’s in the North Devon Council area. Five Clerks were present, representing South Molton Town Council, Braunton Parish Council, Fremington Parish Council, Mr T Squire representing Atherington, Bishops Tawton, Bratton Fleming, East & West Buckland and Goodleigh Parish Councils and myself representing Ashford, Berrynarbor, Chulmleigh, East Worlington, Georgeham, Horwood Lovacott and Newton Tracey, Kentisbury & Trentishoe and Romansleigh Parish Councils. A Councillor from Ilfracombe and a Councillor from North Molton were also there. Mr Austin explained that DCC had agreed to hand over verge maintenance in Barnstaple to the Town Council. Barnstaple has a sponsorship scheme in place with DCC which allowed businesses, community groups and individuals to take on green and planted areas. The relevant Licence is obtained and no fee is charged. 21 areas are sponsored in this way, some of which have a sponsorship sign. In connection with the sign, I asked about planning permission which was acknowledged as necessary. Barnstaple Town Council organise this on behalf of the people who have sponsored the particular area as it would be advertising the company or group. Disposal of green waste was discussed at length. Mr Austin advised that North Devon Council charge £50 per van load of green waste to dispose of this which is the responsibility of DCC.

Report on Housing Needs Surveys RURAL ALLIANCE North Devon – September 2012 Bratton Fleming East Down Kentisbury Arlington Challacombe Goodleigh Marwood Stoke Rivers Loxhore Shirwell Trentishoe RURAL HOUSING PROJECT Exmoor, North Devon & West Somerset The Rural Housing Project has been running since 2002 and is a partnership between Exmoor National Park Authority, North Devon Council, West Somerset Council, English Rural Housing Association, Falcon Rural Housing, Hastoe Housing Association, North Devon Homes, Devon and Cornwall Housing Association and Magna Housing Association. It has been working hard to address the shortage of affordable housing within a predominantly rural area. The area covered by the project displays an extreme disparity between incomes and house prices, which makes it hard for many to gain secure footing within the housing market. The Rural Housing Project is designed to help promote and deliver affordable rural housing strategically across the project area and helps deliver Exmoor National Park housing policies within the Park. This is being achieved by informing people about affordable rural housing, providing help and advice, carrying out research at parish level to assess the affordable housing need and bringing together the community and various partners to help deliver housing where it is needed. One of the tasks for the project is to work with the Parish Council and the local community to assist them in carrying out a housing needs survey, in order to identify whether there is a need for affordable housing for local people in the parish. Colin Savage, Rural Housing Enabler Introduction The “Rural Alliance” is made up of the North Devon parishes of Arlington, Bratton Fleming, Challacombe, East Down, Goodleigh, Kentisbury & Trentishoe, Loxhore, Marwood, Shirwell and Stoke Rivers.
