REPORT BY MRS S SQUIRE, PARISH CLERK, ON ATTENDANCE AT A MEETING ON THURSDAY, 20 AUGUST 2015 AT THE GUILDHALL, BARNSTAPLE ORGANISED BY BARNSTAPLE TOWN COUNCIL TO LOOK AT POSSIBLE WAYS OF MANAGING GRASS AND VERGE CUTTING DUE TO A REDUCTION IN THIS CARRIED OUT BY DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL. Mr Will Austin, Barnstaple Town Clerk introduced himself and said that the invitation to the Meeting had been extended to all Parish and Town Clerk’s in the North Devon Council area. Five Clerks were present, representing South Molton Town Council, Braunton Parish Council, Fremington Parish Council, Mr T Squire representing Atherington, Bishops Tawton, Bratton Fleming, East & West Buckland and Goodleigh Parish Councils and myself representing Ashford, Berrynarbor, Chulmleigh, East Worlington, Georgeham, Horwood Lovacott and Newton Tracey, Kentisbury & Trentishoe and Romansleigh Parish Councils. A Councillor from Ilfracombe and a Councillor from North Molton were also there. Mr Austin explained that DCC had agreed to hand over verge maintenance in Barnstaple to the Town Council. Barnstaple has a sponsorship scheme in place with DCC which allowed businesses, community groups and individuals to take on green and planted areas. The relevant Licence is obtained and no fee is charged. 21 areas are sponsored in this way, some of which have a sponsorship sign. In connection with the sign, I asked about planning permission which was acknowledged as necessary. Barnstaple Town Council organise this on behalf of the people who have sponsored the particular area as it would be advertising the company or group. Disposal of green waste was discussed at length. Mr Austin advised that North Devon Council charge £50 per van load of green waste to dispose of this which is the responsibility of DCC.

  • Al160207osa Market Coastal Towns
EEC/07/63/HQ Environment, Economy and Culture Overview/Scrutiny Committee 5 March 2007 Market and Coastal Towns Report of the Director of Environment, Economy and Culture 1. Summary In January 2006, members received a report on the draft Devon Sites and Premises Strategy and as a result expressed concern about the shortage of premises for smaller businesses. It was resolved that a further report be submitted, which covered economic development issues relating to Market Towns, including the availability of sites for relocation of small businesses and the Market and Coastal Town initiative (MCTi). This report concentrates on work undertaken in association with the MCTi pending further analysis of specific matters relevant to business premises. 2. Background In the South West, the MCTi commenced in 2000 and was led by the Regional Development Agency, Countryside Agency and English Heritage, with support from many other bodies. The scheme received greater emphasis following the incidence of Foot and Mouth Disease and a number of towns adversely affected were included in the programme. Since October 2004, delivery of the initiative has been charged to the Market and Coastal Towns Association (MCTA). This is an independent organisation largely funded by the Regional Development Agency, English Heritage and Big Lottery Fund. The initiative is a community based regeneration programme focusing on the preparation, by local people, of a long term Community Strategic Plan covering the social, economic, environmental and cultural features of their town and its hinterland. The MCTA delivers capacity building support to communities, enabling them to prepare the plans and develop their skills and organisational capacity while sharing good practice with others.

  • DEVON AREA GROUP REPORTS 2019 Devon Bootlegs East Devon
DEVON AREA GROUP REPORTS 2019 Devon Bootlegs Devon Bootlegs has maintained good membership numbers over the last 12 months and indeed, continues to attract new walkers of all ages. We offer a strong and varied walks programme with walks every Sunday and when time allows, on Saturdays too. There was also a very successful adventure to Lundy earlier this year which all participants thoroughly enjoyed. In addition to regular walks, we continue to organise a variety of social events including cinema evenings, walks planning meetings and an annual Christmas party. Jenna Chynoweth East Devon We are the largest of the Devon Groups with nearly one fifth of Devon’s membership, reflecting in part our geographic size and population. Membership held up consistently in 2019, remarkably staying within 10 of an average level of 476 members throughout the year, and close to our historic peak. Most of all, our members appear to value our extensive programme of led walks. We are very pleased that this year we have been able to expand our programme to its greatest-ever extent. We offered, for the first time, two led walks on each of our regular walk days of Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. With additional walks outside this regular pattern, this amounted to some 330 walks per year. We know that this level of provision is an attraction not only to Ramblers resident in our area, but also to many outside. This has only been possible with a very enthusiastic walks programme team and a willingness of around 120 of our members to be leaders.
