It was directed by Steven Ives and featured by Ken Burns as executive producer. It was first broadcast on PBS for eight consecutive nights from September 15 to September 22, 1996. Producers Steven Ives and Ken Burns have worked together on several previous series, including Civil War (1990) and Baseball (1994). In 1988, Ives established his own production company, Insignia Films, and began working in the West as a director, and Burns signed the project as an executive producer. To create the West, the film crew traveled more than 100,000 miles (160,000 km) by plane, conducted 72 interviews, visited 74 archives and collections, and shot more than 250 hours of video footage. The research consultants were Peter Palmquist, an independent photo expert at the time. The film was financed by General Motors. Among the famous interviewees were historians Stephen Ambrose, J.S. Holliday and Richard White; novelists Maxine Hong Kingston and N. Scott Momaday; ecologists and writers Terry Tempest Williams and Mark Reisner; Editing by Mark Heinrich and politicians Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Anne Richards, Stuart Udall, and Ralph Yarborough. Many famous actors lent their voices to the West, including Adam Arkin, Matthew Broderick, Ossie Davis, Keith Kerradin, John Lithgow, Mary Stuart Masterson, Blythe Danner, acclaimed playwright Arthur Miller and Jimmy Smiths. The film's narrator, Peter Coyote, later also recounted Burns' documentaries, National Parks: America's Best Idea (2009), Roosevelts: An Intimate History (2014), Vietnam War (2017), The Mayo Clinic: Faith--Hope (2018) and Country Music (2019). West premiered on PBS on September 15, 1996. The series was divided into episodes, with one episode aired each night for eight consecutive nights. The episodes were reduced to about 90 minutes each in length, with a total duration of more than 12 hours for the entire series. The final episode aired on September 22, 1996.
