FEDECRAIL – PRESIDENT’S REPORT – 27.06.2017 Following the election of Jaap Nieweg to the Council at the AGM in May, it is intended that he should take over the Presidency from me at the conclusion of our Council meeting on 1st July, as I explained at the meeting in Antwerp. Therefore this will be the last President’s Report filed by me. I intend to remain on the Council until our next AGM in Scotland next April. It was during the celebration of 150 years of Nederlands Spoorwegen in 1989 that the idea of establishing a pan-European Federation of museum and tourist railways was first mooted, so it is fitting that my successor should be a Dutchman. Several years followed with meetings of a founding group set up at a conference held in Hameln in Germany in 1991. FEDECRAIL was finally established with its present constitution in1994 when the King of the Belgians signed the appropriate decree. -

Rail Transport Masterplan Rail Transport Masterplan Foreword by the Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Dear friends of the railways, During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen how important and reliable the railways are. At no time have we been without a stable range of basic passenger services and an uninterrupted supply of goods in the freight transport sector. The contribution made by the rail freight sector, in particular, during the crisis situation clearly illustrates that its capabilities are indispensable for the secure supply of goods to the population. Never in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany has rail transport been as important as it is today. It is, in the best sense of the phrase, “systemically relevant”. We will do our utmost to ensure that the rail sector comes through the pandemic unscathed and heads into the future in a strengthened condition. The Federal Government’s economic stimulus package currently earmarks more than 7.6 billion euros for rail transport alone, of which 5 billion euros is designed to shore up the state-owned DB AG. It is obvious that the Federal Government, as the owner, cannot leave its undertaking in the lurch. However, it also obvious Andreas Scheuer, Member of the German Bundestag that we will take care to ensure that this increase in equity Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is not allowed to result in a distortion of competition on the railways. Moreover, we will join forces with the federal states to establish a bailout for local public transport and provide a further 2.5 billion euros for this purpose. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract In the 1920s and 1930s, Czechoslovakia created a national railway network out of the fragments of the obsolete Habsburg system. The main aim of the construction project was to create a connection from the previously Cisleithanian Bohemian Lands to the previously Hungarian territories of Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia. The study examines how this new network contributed to the discursive development of a Czechoslovak national space. The railways in the twentieth century have been neglected as a research topic, since, unlike in the nineteenth century, they no longer represented the shift to industrial modernity. However, the two trajectories of the railway discourse in the inter-war period still evolved around the notion of modernity. On the one hand, the railways were considered an instrument of national unification capable of overcoming the geographic and ethnic fragmentation of the country. In highly organic imagery, the railway lines between Slovakia and the Bohemian Lands were imagined as the backbone of a healthy nation-state, and thus as material confirmation of a pre-existing unity. At the same time, railway lines never stopped at national borders. Due to their transnational character, they were turned into a symbol of Czechoslovakia’s modern cosmopolitanism. The study shows how these often incongruous goals were negotiated by examining the following themes: the railway plans developed by the geographer Viktor Dvorský, the new railway lines in Slovakia, the national conflict on trains, the new railway stations in Hradec Králové and Uherské Hradiště, the country’s representation in travel writing, and the discourse around a Czechoslovak high-speed train.
