Rozdział III Godność człowieka i dobro wspólne w nauczaniu papieskim w latach 1878−1958 1. Christian Brugger Frontmatter More Information catholic social teaching Catholic Social Teaching (CST) refers to the corpus of authoritative ecclesiastical teaching, usually in the form of papal encyclicals, on social matters, beginning with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum (1891) and running through Pope Francis. CST is not a social science and its texts are not pragmatic primers for social activists. It is a normative exercise of Church teaching, a kind of comprehensive applied – although far from systematic – social moral theology. This volume is a scholarly engagement with this 130-year-old documentary tradition. Its twenty-three essays aim to provide a constructive, historically sophisticated, critical exegesis of all the major (and some of the minor) documents of CST. The volume’s appeal is not limited to Catholics, or even just to those who embrace, or who are seriously interested in, Christianity. Its appeal is to any scholar interested in the history or content of modern CST. Gerard V. Bradley is Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame. He has been a Visiting Professor of Politics at Princeton University, a Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and is currently a Senior Fellow of the Witherspoon Institute. At Notre Dame he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Jurisprudence and serves as Co-Director of the Natural Law Institute. E. ABSTRACT Ontology, Ecclesiology, Nonviolence: the Witness Against War in the Theologies of John Howard Yoder, Dorothy Day, and William Stringfellow Myles Werntz, Ph.D. Mentor: Barry A. Harvey, Ph.D. This dissertation argues that nonviolence bears witness to a particular form of social existence visible in the church. War, I argue, describes a form of social existence which is a counter social ontology to the existence given by Christ to the church. By examining the interrelationship of social ontology, ecclesiology, and nonviolence in the work of John Howard Yoder, Dorothy Day, and William Stringfellow, I argue that a nonviolence which is thoroughly Christian must account for how nonviolence is related to the structures and practices of the church, but also how nonviolence bears witness to a new form of social existence in the church. Discussion of these three figures occurs broadly within the context of the Vietnam War, exploring how nonviolence for each was not an abstracted ethic, but an act which witnessed to a new social reality present in the church. Discussing how nonviolence bears witness to a new social existence made known through the church occurs in uniquely configured ways for each figure, which I describe in chapters devoted to each one. The result is an ecumenical dialogue among Yoder (a Mennonite), Day, (a Roman Catholic), and Stringfellow (an Episcopalian) about how to describe this social existence, how the church structures and practices contribute to the articulation of nonviolence, and how to speak theologically about the normativity of nonviolence for Christian faith and practice. In the conclusion, I bring the insights from these three together, arguing for a more fulsome way to describe Christian nonviolence. -

Presidential Address
PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS It has been an idea of the Board of Directors that at the annual convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America in place of the report submitted by the President at the opening meeting there should be a brief Presidential address. The theme is to be, gen- erally, a summary of the theological progress of the year, or a period of time, or recent theological development and trends, a kind of gen- eral conspectus of the field. It is in this direction that I shall attempt tonight to make a beginning, and though the effort be feeble and the result but superficial, it may, under the Holy Spirit, lead others in succeeding years to more profound and enlightening achievements. With alacrity I have followed the suggestion to attempt to present a study of the theological content of the utterances of our happily reigning Pontiff, Pope Pius XII, to determine, if possible, what dogmas, what precepts His Holiness has emphasized and developed and to answer the question as to the extent of this influence on theo- logical thought and study and perhaps evaluate the contribution that the discussions of theologians have made to these pronouncements of the Vicar of Christ. Let me first speak of a few impressions that were made upon me in my study of the documents. The first was my amazement at the multitude of the utterances of our Holy Father and their universal range. I discovered that a bibliographical volume, Guide to the Documents of Pius XII,1 merely listing the titles and places of printing and comment, cover- ing a period of ten years, ran to a two column volume of 206 pages (excluding indices, etc.). -
