Karl Rahner’s Work on the Assumption of Mary into Heaven By Mark F. Fischer, St. John’s Seminary, Camarillo [Mark F. Fischer is Professor of Theology at St. John’s Seminary, the seminary of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Hans-Georg Gadamer and the Catholic Theology of Tradition (Berkeley: Graduate Theological Union, 1985). In 2005 he published The Foundations of Karl Rahner, a paraphrase of Rahner’s Foundations of Catholic Faith.] Abstract Karl Rahner completed his Assumptio Beatae Mariae Virginis in 1951 but did not receive permission to publish it from his Jesuit superiors. The work was only published in 2004, twenty years after Rahner’s death. This essay examines his treatise on the Assumption of Mary and the objections of the censors. The relation between the treatise and Rahner’s publication of 1947, “On the Theology of Death,” receives special attention. The shorter work was appended to the Marian treatise as an “excursus” but laid the foundation for the later work. Rahner reinterpreted the dogma of the Assumption in light of the resurrection of the dead, which the assumption of Mary’s body and soul into heaven anticipates. Among Rahner’s many speculative comments, this essay focuses on three. First, at the final resurrection, the soul (separated at death from the body) re-creates a new and glorified body as its fulfillment and perfection. Second, the glorified body expresses a metaphysical holiness that matures between the moment of death and the final judgment. And third, the resurrection of the body completes the transformation of the world as a new heaven and a new earth that began with the Incarnation. -

{ Lecture 19 } FORERUNNERS TO THE REFORMATION * * * * * Long before Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg Door, there were those who recognized the corruption within the Roman Catholic Church and the need for major reform. Generally speaking, these men attempted to stay within the Catholic system rather than attempting to leave the church (as the Protestant Reformers later would do). The Waldensians (1184–1500s) • Waldo (or Peter Waldo) lived from around 1140 to 1218. He was a merchant from Lyon. But after being influenced by the story of the fourth-century Alexius (a Christian who sold all of his belongings in devotion to Christ), Waldo sold his belongings and began a life of radical service to Christ. • By 1170, Waldo had surrounded himself with a group of followers known as the Poor Men of Lyon, though they would later become known as Waldensians. • The movement was denied official sanction by the Roman Catholic Church (and condemned at the Third Lateran Council in 1179). Waldo was excommunicated by Pope Lucius III in 1184, and the movement was again condemned at the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215. • Waldensians were, therefore, persecuted by the Roman Catholics as heretics. However, the movement survived (even down to the present) though the Waldensians were often forced into hiding in the Alps. • The Waldensian movement was characterized by (1) voluntary poverty (though Waldo taught that salvation was not restricted to those who gave up their wealth), (2) lay preaching, and (2) the authority of the Bible (translated in the language of the people) over any other authority. -

Titus 2, 11), the Redeemer of mankind is associated jwith His Mother. The Lamb, the Ruler of the earth, will be sent-but I · from the rock of the desert; the flower will blossom but from the root of Jesse." 1 Hence where grace is concerned,1 when revelation announces something about the God-man,~ it does not overlook the Mother of the God-man. -

Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -

Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. CONDEMNATION OF COMMUNISM IN PONTIFICAL MAGISTERIUM since Pius IX till Paul VI Petru CIOBANU Abstract: The present article, based on several magisterial documents, illus- trates the approach of Roman Pontiffs, beginning with Pius IX and ending with Paul VI, with regard to what used to be called „red plague”, i.e. communism. The article analyses one by one various encyclical letters, apostolic letters, speeches and radio messages in which Roman Pontiffs condemned socialist theories, either explicitly or implicitly. Introduction And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. These words, written over 2.000 years ago, didn’t lose their value along time, since then and till now, reflecting the destiny of Christian Church and Christians – „those who guard the God words and have the Jesus tes- timony” – in the world, where appear so many „dragons” that have the aim to persecute Jesus Christ followers. -

The Perfect Consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary According to the Teachings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort By Fr. Thomas Steinke The Importance of Making the Consecration to Jesus through Mary I am basing my conference today on the book "True Devotion to Mary" which is universally acclaimed as the single greatest and most theologically authoritative book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever to have been written. In it De Montfort says that “the formation and education of the great saints who will come at the end of the world are reserved to her, for only this singular and wondrous virgin can produce in union with the Holy Spirit singular and wondrous things.”1 Literally, you could be one of those great saints and will be one of those great saints if you live out this consecration. After today’s talk, you should have a very good idea of how to live out this consecration and thus become a great saint. Papal Support I want to begin by talking about the importance of making the consecration to Mary according to the method of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. Since as Catholics we believe the Holy Spirit guides the Church in its papal documents, I want to establish papal support for this devotion. Pope Leo XIII encouraged everyone to make acts of consecration to the Virgin Mary based on the method of Saint Louis de Montfort. He also beatified de Montfort in 1888, adopted de Montfort's Marian terminology (calling Mary the "Mediatrix" and "Co-Redemptrix"), and wrote no less than ten encyclicals on the Rosary. -

They have come to the See of Peter not only to redeem their own faults, but also to expiate the sins of the world and implore the return of society to God, from Whom alone can come true peace of heart, civil concord and the well-being of nations. 2. And We know that these first groups of pilgrims form the vanguard of those who will come more frequently and in greater numbers during the favorable season. Therefore, the hope is warranted that from this still more salutary and abundant fruits will be harvested. Nevertheless, if these sights have given Us gentle comfort, reasons are not lacking for the anxiety and anguish which grieve Our paternal heart. And in the first place, although war has almost everywhere ceased, nevertheless, the longed-for peace has not come - a stable and solid peace which might happily solve the many and ever-increasing reasons for discord. Many nations are still opposed to each other; and as confidence lessens an armaments race begins, leaving the hearts of all overcome by fear and trepidation. -

Ad Caeli Reginam accepted so that with the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam, of October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary.[2] 2 Basic teachings According to Catholic teaching Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her divine motherhood of Je- sus Christ, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of salvation. Mary was cho- sen as Mother of Christ in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race: “As Christ, the new Adam must be called a King not merely because He is Son of God, but also because He is our Redeemer, so, analogously, the Most Blessed Virgin is queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, as the new Eve, she was associated with the new Adam.”[3] 3 Context The Church has always taught that Mary is far above all other creatures in dignity, and after her Son possesses pri- macy over all. Capizzi, Ph.D. Vatican II’s Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dignitatis humanae (DH), poses the problem of development in Catholic moral and social doctrine. This problem is threefold, consisting in properly understanding the meaning of pre-conciliar magisterial teaching on religious liberty, the meaning of DH itself, and the Declaration’s implications for how social doctrine develops. A survey of recent scholarship reveals that scholars attend to the first two elements in contradictory ways, and that their accounts of doctrinal development are vague. The dissertation then proceeds to the threefold problematic. Chapter two outlines the general parameters of doctrinal development. The third chapter gives an interpretation of the pre- conciliar teaching from Pius IX to John XXIII. To better determine the meaning of DH, the fourth chapter examines the Declaration’s drafts and the official explanatory speeches (relationes) contained in Vatican II’s Acta synodalia. The fifth chapter discusses how experience may contribute to doctrinal development and proposes an explanation for how the doctrine on religious liberty changed, drawing upon the work of Jacques Maritain and Basile Valuet.
