Conservare e studiare gli archivi di persona Materiali dalla giornata di studio organizzata da Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche, Treviso, 26 ottobre 2007 Il fondo Angelo Marchesan STEFANO CHIOATTO (Seminario vescovile, Treviso) L’archivio del Seminario vescovile di Treviso viene a formarsi con l’inizio dell’isti- tuzione, all’immediato ridosso del Concilio di Trento. Il primo registro che si possiede risale al 1567. Gli otto trasferimenti di sede succedutisi da quel tempo fino agli anni 1841-1842, allorquando definitivamente il Seminario venne a stabilirsi nei locali dell’ex convento di San Nicolò, acquistato dalla diocesi dal demanio, insieme all’occupazione delle truppe francesi negli anni a cavallo tra Sette e Ottocento, alle vicende belliche delle due guerre mondiali e i relativi bombardamenti, ne hanno ovviamente danneggiato la con- sistenza. E tuttavia anche nell’attuale dimora l’archivio non deve aver trovato per lungo tempo una collocazione precisa e stabile. In uno di tali locali era stata trasferita, su armadi appositamente predispo- sti alla fine degli anni ottanta, una parte considerevole di esso. Finalmente dall’autunno del 2003 riposa, per così dire, in un unico locale, utilizzando un piano mezzano, tra il primo e il secondo, del reparto San Giuseppe, costruito all’inizio degli anni cinquanta. Tale problematica situazione logistica è la probabile conseguenza della non chiara attri- buzione di competenze all’interno dell’istituzione su chi dovesse ricoprire il compito di archivista.

It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological.

    Paolo Aranha Vulgaris seu Universalis Early Modern Missionary Representations of an Indian Cosmopolitan Space Early Modern Oriental Knowledge and Missionary Debates in India The history of religious missions, in particular the early modern European Catholic ones, has drawn a remarkable interest in recent years, both among scholars and by the general public.1 Such a trend can be explained by several reasons, although all of them seem to be related to the processes of globali- zation or mondialisation that are seen at work with special intensity in our time. The religious missions are indeed a phenomenon that exemplifies in an eloquent way the intellectual exercise of a global history aiming to find connections and exchanges, both material and cultural, among different parts of the world. Missionaries can be seen also as professional brokers of cultural diversity, evoking just too easily—and not necessarily in a very pertinent way—current debates on multiculturalism and encounters of cultures. More- over, European religious missions are an obvious benchmark for endorsing or criticising the category of “Orientalism,” as developed—both influentially and controversially—by Edward Said (1978). As religious missions draw a growing attention, it has been recently suggested that these might be considered less predominantlySpecimen than in the past in terms of a religious specificity. Pierre- Antoine Fabre and Bernard Vincent claimed in the introduction to a recent collective book that the historiography on early modern missions has been developed lately in function of “a research horizon independent from the traditions connected to religious history.”2 Such an observation seems to be confirmed in the case of the Jesuits, the single most studied religious order of early modern Catholicism, to the point that “currently, in danger of being lost sight of is precisely the religious dimension of the Jesuit enterprise” (O’Malley 2013: 33).
