  • National Box Office Digest Annual (1940)
Ho# Ujjfice JbiaeAt Haui: «m JL HE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS of many moons to this industry is the matter-of-fact announcement by Technicolor that it will put into effect a flat reduction of one cent a foot on release prints processed after August 1st. "There is a great industrial story of days and nights and months and years behind the manner in which Dr. Kalmus and his associates have boosted the quality and service of color to the industry, beaten down the price step by step, and maintained a great spirit of cooperation with production and exhibition. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION HERBERT T. KALMUS, President , 617 North La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, Subscription Rate, $10.00 Per ■Ml ^Ite. DIGEST ANNUAL *7lie. 1/ea>i WcM. D OMESTIC box office standings take on values in this year of vanished foreign markets that are tremendous in importance. They are the only ratings that mean anything to the producer, director, player, and exhibitor. Gone—at least for years to come—are the days when known box office failures in the American market could be pushed to fabulous income heights and foisted on the suffering American exhibitor because of a shadowy "for¬ eign value.” Gone are the days—and we hope forever—when producers could know¬ ingly, and with "malice aforethought,” set out on the production of top budgetted pictures that would admittedly have no appeal to American mass audiences, earn no dimes for American exhibitors. All because of that same shadowy foreign market. ^ ^ So THE DIGEST ANNUAL comes to you at an opportune time.

Bolig The advent of this online discography is a continuation of record descriptions that were compiled by me and published in book form by Allan Sutton, the publisher and owner of Mainspring Press. When undertaking our work, Allan and I were aware of the work started by Ted Fa- gan and Bill Moran, in which they intended to account for every recording made by the Victor Talking Machine Company. We decided to take on what we believed was a more practical approach, one that best met the needs of record collectors. Simply stat- ed, Fagan and Moran were describing recordings that were not necessarily published; I believed record collectors were interested in records that were actually available. We decided to account for records found in Victor catalogs, ones that were purchased and found in homes after 1901 as 78rpm discs, many of which have become highly sought- after collector’s items. The following Victor discographies by John R. Bolig have been published by Main- spring Press: Caruso Records ‐ A History and Discography GEMS – The Victor Light Opera Company Discography The Victor Black Label Discography – 16000 and 17000 Series The Victor Black Label Discography – 18000 and 19000 Series The Victor Black

Creating “Paradise of the Pacific”: How Tourism Began in Hawaii by James Mak Working Paper No. 2015-1 February 3, 2015 UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MANOA 2424 MAILE WAY, ROOM 540 • HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I 96822 WWW.UHERO.HAWAII.EDU WORKING PAPERS ARE PRELIMINARY MATERIALS CIRCULATED TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION AND CRITICAL COMMENT. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE THOSE OF THE INDIVIDUAL AUTHORS. Creating “Paradise of the Pacific”: How Tourism Began in Hawaii James Mak Professor Emeritus of Economics and Fellow, University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization University of Hawaii at Manoa Honolulu, HI. 96822 U.S.A. February 3, 2015 Abstract This article recounts the early years of one of the most successful tourist destinations in the world, Hawaii, from about 1870 to 1940. Tourism began in Hawaii when faster and more predictable steamships replaced sailing vessels in trans-Pacific travel. Governments (international, national, and local) were influential in shaping the way Hawaii tourism developed, from government mail subsidies to steamship companies, local funding for tourism promotion, and America’s protective legislation on domestic shipping. Hawaii also reaped a windfall from its location at the crossroads of the major trade routes in the Pacific region. The article concludes with policy lessons. Key words: Hawaii, tourism, tourism development Acknowledgement: I thank Dore Minatodani, Senior Librarian, Hawaiian Collection at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Library, for her kind assistance. 1 Introduction Hawaii is a dream vacation destination for millions of people around the world. U.S. News and World Report rates Maui the best vacation destination in the U.S.1 Maui is also rated fourth best place to visit in the world, the second best place to honeymoon, and the best summer vacation destination.2 Kauai is second in the world in having the best beaches; Honolulu is number five in best family vacations; and the island of Hawaii (Big Island) is fourteenth in the best islands category.

  • Messages of American Popular Song to Women During World War II
“I’m Doin’ It for Defense”: Messages of American Popular Song to Women during World War II A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Amy Brooks BM, Bob Jones University, 2008 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD Abstract World War II presented many new opportunities for American women. In this time of need, they were called upon to take an active part in the war effort, whether by means of working in a factory, growing a victory garden, or serving as a volunteer for wartime organizations. Women made great strides forward in areas such as the workforce and the military. The American popular song industry promoted these new roles for women. I have compiled over 150 songs from 1940 to1945 that relate to women’s roles during the World War II era. Of these songs, I have chosen a select number of songs that best demonstrate popular culture’s attitudes and actions towards women during the war. These songs can be divided into five categories: women in the military, women in the workforce, women’s war effort, women’s responsibilities to men in uniform, and women in the immediate post-war period. I have studied the representative songs by considering their lyrics to identify the objectives supported by the popular song industry. I took into consideration the venues in which they were presented and how these performances influenced their reception.

Abstract. In the early 1930s, Hollywood studios developed a model for the musical comedy that would become emblematic of Hollywood cinema until the mid-1960s. To that end, they bet on the most popular vocalist of this period, Bing Crosby, the crooner whose style has influenced generations of American singers, including stars like Dean Martin, Doris Day, Elvis Presley and Pat Boone, who were the main protagonists of a trend in the Hollywood musical film that favoured popular naturalistic-style singers, capable of interpret songs without showing off the vocal technique. Keywords: Musical Comedy, Classic Hollywood Cinema, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Pat Boone. 1 Claves 2020.1 Introdução Com o nascimento do cinema sonoro em 1927, nasceu também um novo género cinematográfico, o filme musical.
