Introduction The Limerick Athenaeum is comprised of two separate buildings at Upper Cecil Street Limerick. The original building, which now houses the Limerick Vocational Educational Committee [LVEC], was built as the offices of the Commissioners of St. Michael’s Parish in 1833. It was, in effect, the Town Hall of Georgian Limerick. The second building, the Athenaeum Hall was built by the Limerick Athenaeum as a Lecture Theatre in 1855. 1833 MINUTES OF St MICHAEL'S PARISH COMMISSIONERS [Source: From original manuscripts at the Limerick Archives] April 19th 1833: At a meeting of the above, with William White in the Chair, it was resolved that the proposal of John Stokes end Michael Guerin to build the new Parish Offices be accepted, for the sum of'£ 1,070 sterling. The contractors have to expend £300 before they get any money from the Board. Nicholas Hannon is appointed superintendent. Report in the Limerick Chronicle of the 20th April 1833: "The Commissioners of St Michael's Parish, yesterday, agreed with Mr Stokes, architect, for the sum of £1,070 to erect premises for a Watch-House, Board-Room etc in Cecil Street, to be accomplished on the 1st January next". Extracts from the Minute Books of the Commissioners of St. Michael's Parish: Page 2: Creagh & Charles McMahon act as guarantors for contractors. Page l7: Letter from John Stokes re £200 payment for building costs. Page 20: Donel Barrington is agent for Earl of Limerick. John Fogerty is awarded £ 3-10-0 for plans of the new building. Page 24: £100 awarded to the builder. Page 31: Pery Street and Barrington Street named by the Commissioners. Page 35: £200 awarded to builder. The Commissioners use Commercial Buildings as temporary accommodation. 1 1834 Page 40. Feb 7th, 1834. A letter from Joshua Mark, stating that the levy on his concerns in Griffith's Row is too high. Resolved that the valuation therof be ten pounds. The draft leases from the Earl of Limerick re site have been submitted. Approval of 5 lives, namely Richard Keene, son of Daniel Ryan Keene BL, aged about 5 years and Michael O'Brien, son of Cornelius O'Brien, aged about 8 years, and Michael Quin, son of Michael Quin, grocer, aged about 7 years, under the Act of Parliament for the improvement of this parish without any personal liability. Page 41. Request for £200 from builder. The Commissioners approve carts with straps to handle drunks in city. Page 47. Letter from John Griffin re sewer between the laneway end Parish offices. Page 49. £200 on account awarded to builder re John Griffin. Page 57 or Page 59]. 25th August 1834; The Minute Books of the Commissioners note the address as The New Parish Office, Upper Cecil Street in the rooms formerly held in the possession of the late Earl of Glentworth. June 29: Limerick Reporter re the Haverty painting, the "Limerick Piper", at the Cork Exhibition. Sept 17: Limerick Reporter that the artist Haverty visits city. Oct 10: In Jan 11th 1917 there is a Memory Lane article in the Limerick Chronicle re the location of the Art School at George's Street, which overlooks Roche’s Hanging Gardens in 1852 [10th Oct 1852]. Nov 12: Advert in Munster News that Mr Wm Lane Joynt is to give the Inaugural speech at the Literary & Scientific Society. Note: Speech by Lord Monteagle re opening of Limerick Art School published by George McKern, Printers, in Limerick City Library Local Collection Limerick Literary & Scientific Society Nov 17: Report in Munster News of the speech by Wm Lane Joynt where he gives the history of the Limerick Literary & Scientific Society and that he proposes the establishment of a Limerick Athenaeum. Dec 31: The Limerick Reporter notes that 155 students are attending the Art School A photo-copy of the Prospectus of the Art School is located at the Limerick Museum. 3 1853 The Limerick Improvement Act (16th Vic) The Limerick Corporation Act (16th & 17th Vic., c.93) March 2/5: Limerick Chronicle re advert seeking a site for the Athenaeum with a letter of support from. Wm. Fitzgerald and a £50 subscription from Robert Tighe, who commends Wm. Lane Joynt for the proposal to establish an Athenaeum. April 6: As above Munster News. Lecture 1 by Wm. Lane Joynt April 9: Limerick Chronicle re "The Establishment of a Limerick Athenaeum", Part 1 by Wm. Lane Joynt. He discusses history of cultural societies in city. Lecture 2 by Wm. Lane Joynt April 13: Limerick Chronicle re fundraising. The Limerick Athenaeum Part 2 by Wm. Lane Joynt. He outlines his ideas on management of the Athenaeum and suggests that it should follow example of the Manchester Athenaeum. He examines sites at the Crescent and Catherine St and Henry St. Letter of support from Lord Cloncurry. Lecture 3 by Wm. Lane Joynt April 16: Limerick Chronicle re Report of Art Exhibition in Dublin. Speech on the The Limerick Athenaeum Part 3 by Wm. Lane Joynt. He discusses finances and makes the point that the Athenaeum 'must be open to all classes'. He mentions the Manchester and the Leeds Athenaeum. April 20: Munster News re the growing support for the idea and notice of a public meeting by the citizens to discuss the proposal. Report on the present use of the Philosophical Buildings at the Havergal Hall [site of the Lyric cinema] as a lace industry centre employing 640 girls. [Francis Spaight re-possessed the building] List of supporters in city for the Athenaeum. Lecture 4 by Wm. Lane Joynt The Limerick Athenaeum Part 4 by Wm. Lane Joynt, who summarises his ideas and concludes by saying: "Let this year; also be famous in our annals for the establishment of an Athenaeum". April 23: Munster News re Editorial on proposed public meeting of The Limerick Athenaeum. Leamy Institute April 26: Limerick Chronicle re the Public Meeting re the Athenaeum held at the Leamy Institute, where the proposal is discussed. There is already £321 in funds. A proposal to incorporate the School of Art, Harmonic Society and the Literary & Scientific Soc under one roof in the Athenaeum is adapted. 'The people of Limerick were to have a sort of Literary Republic in the proposed Athenaeum'. April 27: Munster News re the above meeting. Letter from 'Amicus' suggests the Crescent as a site and 'not hid in a back street'. April 30: Munster News re additional report of the meeting. The building was located at 19 or 49 George Street overlooking Roche’s Hanging Gardens. [The LPYMA society is located there at present]. Over 300 people were present as the names of the prize-winners announced]. Lecture 3 by Dr. Kidd June 8: The Limerick Athenaeum Part 3 by Dr Kidd.
