Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Mitchell Leisen was a noted director during Hollywood's Golden Age. He is credited with more than 40 feature films, which are celebrated for their stylishness and visual elegance. He excelled at witty, romantic comedies that are often tinged with a touch of melancholy, such as the classic "screwball" comedy Easy Living (1937) and the clever, cosmopolitan farce Midnight (1939). Leisen has also been hailed for his "gender role-reversal" films, where the male lead is cast as the sex object and the female lead as the aggressor. Not surprising for a bisexual director working in Hollywood, Leisen's other thematic obsessions included mistaken identity, role-playing, and deception. Leisen returned to the same performers film after film, developing strong working partnerships. Although he was instrumental in shaping the careers of such actors as Fred MacMurray and Ray Milland, Leisen became typed as a "woman's director" for the fastidious, detailed attention he paid to the costuming and art direction of his productions, as well as for the nuanced, spontaneous performances he coaxed from such actresses as Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert, and Olivia de Havilland. Among many film historians, Leisen's artistic reputation has been tarnished somewhat by the stormy relationships he became embroiled in with some of his screenwriters, most notably Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder. After working on several films with Leisen, both writers demanded to be allowed to direct their own scripts, in part because they objected to the sophisticated veneer of Leisen's directorial style and to the changes he frequently made to their screenplays. -

Her father's position as a civilian supply officer with the army took the family to Key West, FL and San Juan, Puerto Rico, but the majority of Swanson's childhood was spent in Chicago. It was in Chicago at Essanay Studios in 1914 that she began her lifelong association with the motion picture industry. She moved to California where she worked for Sennett/Keystone Studios before rising to stardom at Paramount in such Cecil B. -

GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything. -

Introduction The Limerick Athenaeum is comprised of two separate buildings at Upper Cecil Street Limerick. The original building, which now houses the Limerick Vocational Educational Committee [LVEC], was built as the offices of the Commissioners of St. Michael’s Parish in 1833. It was, in effect, the Town Hall of Georgian Limerick. The second building, the Athenaeum Hall was built by the Limerick Athenaeum as a Lecture Theatre in 1855. 1833 MINUTES OF St MICHAEL'S PARISH COMMISSIONERS [Source: From original manuscripts at the Limerick Archives] April 19th 1833: At a meeting of the above, with William White in the Chair, it was resolved that the proposal of John Stokes end Michael Guerin to build the new Parish Offices be accepted, for the sum of'£ 1,070 sterling. The contractors have to expend £300 before they get any money from the Board. Nicholas Hannon is appointed superintendent. Report in the Limerick Chronicle of the 20th April 1833: "The Commissioners of St Michael's Parish, yesterday, agreed with Mr Stokes, architect, for the sum of £1,070 to erect premises for a Watch-House, Board-Room etc in Cecil Street, to be accomplished on the 1st January next". BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORY NOTE: Mitchell Leisen, (born October 6, 1898, Menominee, Michigan, U.S. — died October 28, 1972, Los Angeles, California), American costume designer, art director, and film and television director. He entered the film industry in the 1920s, beginning in the art and costume departments. He directed his first film in 1933 with CRADLE SONG and became known for his keen sense of aesthetics in the glossy Hollywood melodramas and screwball comedies he turned out. His motion pictures — almost all of them made at Paramount — were often dominated by strong female leads such as Barbara Stanwyck, Paulette Goddard, Olivia de Havilland, Claudette Colbert, and Carole Lombard, who rarely were paired with a male actor of equal stature or presence. His best-known films include the Alberto Casella adaptation DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY (1934) and MURDER AT THE VANITIES (1934), a musical mystery story with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra, as well as MIDNIGHT (1939) and HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941), both scripted by Billy Wilder. -

Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts Cinema Miscellaneous Material MISCELLANEOUS MATERIAL The Belknap PHOTOGRAPH collection preserves thousands of shimmering PUBLICITY and PRODUCTION images dating back to the age of Victorian theatre and spanning 20th century vaudeville, Broadway, radio and television. The photos are filed alphabetically by performer name or show title. Performer Production Stills A treasure trove of eclectic information is available in the FLORIDA PERFORMING ARTS VERTICAL FILE highlighting the STATE OF FLORIDA ("Dance Associations", 'Story Tellers", "Theatre Conference", etc), individual CITIES AND TOWNS (from the Panhandle to the Keys in an alphabetical listing), and the city of GAINESVILLE (including the University of Florida) performing arts scene. Florida Vertical File Cities and Towns Vertical File Gainesville Vertical File Trevor "Tommy" Bale epitomized the versatile "circus man" who "did it all" in the center ring and behind the scenes. Noted as one of the world's greatest tiger trainers, Bale was also known as a gifted clown, acrobat, trick bicyclist, vaudevillian and ringmaster. Bale's unpublished and unedited autobiographical manuscript ( written under the guidance of famed ghostwriter and editor Walter B. Gibson - creator of THE SHADOW), paints an exciting picture of the early 20th century European vaudeville and circus circuits. Bale vividly describes the triumphs, glory, pain and agony of life on the road, culminating in Bale's headlining contract with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus in the mid 1950s. The TREVOR "TOMMY" BALE COLLECTION promises three rings (and more) full of circus lore. The John W.
