APPENDIX 2-E WILD & SCENIC RIVER ELIGIBILITY EVALUATION BRIDGER-TETON NATIONAL FOREST Background Under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, Congress declared that there are certain rivers in the nation that possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, and cultural values that should be preserved in a free-flowing condition. These rivers and their environments should be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. During forest plan revision, a comprehensive evaluation of the forest‘s rivers is required to identify those that have potential to be included in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Forest planning must address rivers that meet one of these criteria: Are wholly or partially on National Forest System lands Were identified by Congress for further study Are in the Nationwide Rivers Inventory (NRI) Have been identified as a potential Wild and Scenic River by inventory conducted by the agency. The BTNF identified 31 river segments as potential Wild and Scenic Rivers during an inventory in 1991-1992; a number of additional eligible segments have been identified since and they have been added to the total list of __ river segments and __ miles in each of the following categories. In order to be considered eligible rivers must be essentially free flowing and have one or more outstandingly remarkable values. Rivers identified as eligible will be managed to maintain eligibility until suitability is determined. Rivers determined to be eligible were given a tentative classification as wild, scenic, or recreational according to their proximity to development and level of access. -

E-mail: [email protected] The Teton Range is a normal fault block that contains older reverse faults (Love et al., 1992). Although generally considered to be Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary structures, the timing, kinematic style, and history of these faults is conjectural. Faults include the Forellen Peak Fault to the north, the Buck Mountain Reverse Fault (BMRF) to the west and south, and the Teton normal fault to the east (Love et al., 1992). The BMRF is rooted in Precambrian crystalline rocks and dips steeply to the east about 60°. The fractured Cambrian Flathead sandstone, an orthoquartzite (90%+ quartz), rests nonconformably on the Precambrian. Its stratigraphic position and relative isotropic mineralogy make the Flathead an ideal horizon for studying brittle deformation. Oriented Flathead hand samples were collected from the footwall of the BMRF along a partially overturned syncline (Figure 1). Continuous SEM-Cathodoluminescence (SEM-CL) scanlines of these samples allow for a systematic kinematic analysis of the cemented opening-mode fractures. We quantify attributes such as; geometry, spacing, orientation, and cross-cutting relationships. In isotropic rock, mode-I fractures primarily propagate along the plane perpendicular to Shmin; therefore, microfractures can be used to indicate paleostress trajectories, strain, and relative fracture timing (Anders et al., 2014; Hooker et al. -

Many previously uncharted areas of Wyoming and Colorado were revealed in detailed text and maps in the Hayden reports, which were some of Gannett’s his first published works. While involved with the Hayden Survey, Gannett gained valuable experi- ence in the latest mapping techniques while also enjoying the outdoors, which appealed to his personal taste. On July 26, 1872, Gannett and others in his party ascended a yet unnamed mountain with surveying instruments to reach the summit. Working ahead of the rest of the team, and as a thunderstorm was approaching, Gannett came within 50 feet of the summit when he began to feel a tingling or prickling sensation in his head and also at the ends of his fingers. Soon the sensation increased to pain and his hair began to stand on end. -

Federick Haynes Newell
Federick Haynes Newell Donald J. Pisani Newell, Frederick Haynes(1862-1931), along with Francis Newlands, Gifford Pinchot, and John Wesley Powell, is remembered as a pioneer in the movement to reclaim the American West and as a principal architect of the Reclamation Act of 1902 (see photograph). While in the employ of the U.S. Geological Survey, Newell became chief engineer of the newly organized U.S. Reclamation Service (now the Bureau of Reclamation) in 1902. After Reclamation Service broke away from the Survey in 1907, Newell became the first director of the new organiza- tion. Federick Haynes Newell Newell was born on March 5, 1862, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, a small lumber and mining town in the northwest part of the state. "The people [in Bradford] were what might be called typical mountaineers and laborers in the lumber camps, rough, illiterate and with many queer old country habits and superstitions," Newell recalled in his unpublished memoirs, written in 1927. Newell’s mother died in childbirth the year after he was born, and so did the child she carried. So young Frederick grew up without siblings, and for most of his youth lived with relatives. As he put it, "I attended many public schools in different parts of the country not staying very long at any one as I moved from place to place." Nevertheless, Newell was a good student, and after attending high school in Newton, Massachusetts, where he lived with an uncle, he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1880, in part so that he could live at his grandfather’s house in Brookline, Massachusetts. -

White Grass Stories from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Web Site - Downloaded May 2014 “Share Your Story” The entries below are from a web site established by the National Trust for Historical Preservation as a supplement to its fund raising efforts to support the rehabilitation work at the historic White Grass Ranch, Grand Teton National Park, Moose, Wyoming. Called “Share Your Story,” former dudes, wranglers and special friends of the dude ranch era (1913-1985) were invited to enter a story/post a story on the Trust’s web site. The site was taken down in 2014 after the Trust closed its fundraising efforts having met its goal of over $970,000. Through an agreement with the National Trust, the White Grass Heritage Project is able to archive and republish those stories, and preserve an important part of White Grass Ranch history. NOTE: When the individual stories below were first posted on the National Trust’s web site, some posting dates were inaccurate due to a computer glitch. Information contained in “White Grass Ranch: A Compilation of Stories from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Website and More, 2014” created by Rachel Terhune was used to correct noted inaccuracies.
