ISBN 978–1–4113–2612–5 iii Foreword This “History of the Topographic Branch” is being published to provide a view of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapping program from its inception in the various Surveys of the 19th century to approximately 1954. The manuscript has existed as a draft document within the USGS since 1955 with several unsuccessful attempts during the 1960s and 1970s to review it and make it more complete and up to date. We have chosen not to attempt to update the history for the years from 1955 to the present (2009), but rather to preserve the document as it was written in the 1950s. We have incorporated peer review comments that were developed in the 1960s and 1970s, and effort has been placed on maintaining the manuscript in the voice in which it was written with minor reorganizations to aid the reader in following the topical headings of the history. This manuscript utilizes a series of three asterisks separated by spaces (* * *) to indicate points of ellipsis. Ellipsis is the omission of words necessary for complete grammatical construction, but unnecessary for comprehension in the context of a sentence. Ellipsis is also used in the omission of material from quotations. Tables included in the original manuscript have been referenced in the text, as is now required under USGS publication standards. We have included a set of photographs as a separate section to illustrate some of the ideas and provide portraits of some of the people discussed. These pho- tographs were not a part of the original document and are not the complete set that would be required to appropriately represent the manuscript; rather, they are a sample of those available from the time period and history discussed. These photographs also are referenced in the text. We caution the reader that this is not an interpretative history of the USGS mapping program placed in the context of other events; it is more of a non-interpretative chronology including facts, dates, and events taken from USGS reports, Survey Orders, memoranda, and other docu- mentation. The writing is somewhat uneven and not wholly consistent, some items are empha- sized more than others, and all facts in the document have not been completely verifi ed. In many cases, particularly in the latter one-half of the document, Survey Orders and memoranda are included verbatim in the manuscript. Notwithstanding these comments, we think the document provides a valuable contribution to understanding the history and methods of topographic map- ping in the United States. The USGS is indebted to Thomas C. Miller, a 37.5-year employee of the USGS. Upon his retire- ment, he took a copy of this manuscript and over a period of several years scanned the docu- ment, converted the scanned pages to text, performed an exhaustive edit of the manuscript incorporating peer review comments that had been marked on the paper manuscript, and brought it to the USGS in March 2009, asking if it could be published. It is somewhat fortuitous that the year he brought the manuscript forward for publication is the 125th anniversary of the USGS topographic mapping program. About the authors: Richard Tranter Evans served more than 50 years with the USGS before his retirement in 1951 as the Survey’s senior topographer. He drew the fi rst topographic maps of Pikes Peak, the Grand Canyon, and Salt Lake City. He was an “instrumentman” in the Washing- ton, D.C., surveys in 1910–11, and a fi eld engineer in 1915. He also was detailed to the National iv Park Service as an Acting Superintendent in Zion National Park in 1925–26, and in Hawaii in 1927. He was a member of the Cosmos Club, the Explorer’s Club of New York, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a Member Emeritus of the American Society for Photogrammetry. After his retirement, he served as secretary and executive treasurer for the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping.

Many previously uncharted areas of Wyoming and Colorado were revealed in detailed text and maps in the Hayden reports, which were some of Gannett’s his first published works. While involved with the Hayden Survey, Gannett gained valuable experi- ence in the latest mapping techniques while also enjoying the outdoors, which appealed to his personal taste. On July 26, 1872, Gannett and others in his party ascended a yet unnamed mountain with surveying instruments to reach the summit. Working ahead of the rest of the team, and as a thunderstorm was approaching, Gannett came within 50 feet of the summit when he began to feel a tingling or prickling sensation in his head and also at the ends of his fingers. Soon the sensation increased to pain and his hair began to stand on end.

  • Federick Haynes Newell
    Federick Haynes Newell Donald J. Pisani Newell, Frederick Haynes(1862-1931), along with Francis Newlands, Gifford Pinchot, and John Wesley Powell, is remembered as a pioneer in the movement to reclaim the American West and as a principal architect of the Reclamation Act of 1902 (see photograph). While in the employ of the U.S. Geological Survey, Newell became chief engineer of the newly organized U.S. Reclamation Service (now the Bureau of Reclamation) in 1902. After Reclamation Service broke away from the Survey in 1907, Newell became the first director of the new organiza- tion. Federick Haynes Newell Newell was born on March 5, 1862, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, a small lumber and mining town in the northwest part of the state. "The people [in Bradford] were what might be called typical mountaineers and laborers in the lumber camps, rough, illiterate and with many queer old country habits and superstitions," Newell recalled in his unpublished memoirs, written in 1927. Newell’s mother died in childbirth the year after he was born, and so did the child she carried. So young Frederick grew up without siblings, and for most of his youth lived with relatives. As he put it, "I attended many public schools in different parts of the country not staying very long at any one as I moved from place to place." Nevertheless, Newell was a good student, and after attending high school in Newton, Massachusetts, where he lived with an uncle, he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1880, in part so that he could live at his grandfather’s house in Brookline, Massachusetts.

    A BIOGRAPHY OF CLARENCE EDWARD DUTTON (1841-1912), 19TH CENTURY GEOLOGIST AND GEOGRAPHER Robert Stewart Anderson 1977 PREFACE 2017 It has now been 40 years and 4 months since I finished writing this biography of Clarence Edward Dutton, my Masters thesis at Stanford. This has been on my shelf, and in the stacks at Stanford ever since, read by the few to whom I lent it, or who tripped across it while perusing the stacks. Since then no other biography of Dutton has been written. Stephen J. Pyne produced his tome on G.K. Gilbert about the same time I finished Dutton. So the hole in the history of American geology that this thesis was intended to fill remains open. I apologize for not making this available sooner. Dutton’s story deserves to be told. With Gilbert and Powell, Dutton helped to open the geological and geomorphic story of the American West. While I have spent 30 years as a teacher and a researcher of geomorphology, and therefore know much better than I did in 1977 the context for Dutton’s research, I have not delved back into this thesis to update it, nor have I corrected those impressions I had and interpretations I made at the time of writing. That would have taken too much time – and it is the sense of not having the time to do it right that has prevented me from getting this out. That and the fact that this was a 115 page type-written manuscript. I did manage in 1987 to have it converted to an electronic document.

The map was prepared in connection with the second survey of the park by Ferdinand V. Hayden, the first coming in 1872. This is one of the earliest maps to show Yellowstone as a national park. The map shows the entire park from the Montana state line south to well beyond Yellowstone, Shoshone, Lewis and Heart Lakes, and from the border with Idaho east to the Yellowstone Range and the east fork of the Yellowstone River. Terrific detail of topography is included with contour intervals at 100 feet, watershed, and numerous other features, all at a scale of 1 inch to 2 miles. Names the Upper, Shoshone, Gibbon, and Heart Lake Geyser Basins, Mud Geysers, Mammoth Hot Springs, and much more. The primary triangulation was undertaken by A.D. Wilson, with a secondary triangulation and topography by Henry Gannett, M.E, under the direction of F.V. Hayden.
