Downton Abbey and a Culinary Travelogy: Histories of Anglo-Indian Imperial Cooking Downton Abbey and a Culinary Travelogy: Histories of Anglo-Indian Imperial Cooking Arup K. Chatterjee Abstract This paper explores recent trends in culinary representations in British television, and global food biographies, going back to Victorian or Edwardian Raj, i.e., the popular imperial television saga, Downton Abbey (2010-15), and two histories on the Curry, by Lizzie Collingham (2006) and Colleen Taylor Sen (2008). Just as Bengali or other subregional specializations in Indian cuisines could not entirely disavow nineteenth- century European influences, the British too could not entirely retreat from their culinary miscegenation, which they later sought to refine and reify into their own culture, in a brand of food described herein as currigatawny. While historians like Susan Zlotnick, Sharmila Sen, Modhumita Roy, and others contend that British imperial politics was closely linked to the domain of food, Collingham and this paper argue that the culinary domain was not consequential but indeed fundamental to British imperialism. In doing so, the paper offers a travelogy of the curry, in imperial and contemporary Britain, which has recently seen the shutting down of over one thousand curry-houses, since the time of the Brexit-leave-campaign (November, 2016). The paper ends with a comparative perspective into the place of the curry in contemporary Britain, and in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars (1815)—a phase marked by industrial revolution, growing middle-class literacy, print cultures, and a subsequent rise in the publication of Victorian cookbooks, that are beginning to be fetishized today. -

Demand for more transparency grew during the 1990s. The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 introduced national regulation, but in March 2006 it became clear that further regulation of loans to parties was also necessary, when details emerged of loans made during the general election campaign of 2005. The Electoral Commission reviewed the question of funding in 2003-4 and both the Constitutional Affairs Select Committee and Sir Hayden Phillips have published reports recently. On the publication of Sir Hayden’s report on 15 March 2007, the Prime Minister backed his call for inter-party talks, designed to reach a resolution by the summer recess. CRESC Report for FSB Wales WHAT WALES COULD BE Lucy Brill, Luke Cowie, Peter Folkman, Julie Froud, Sukhdev Johal, Adam Leaver, Michael Moran, Karel Williams WHAT WALES COULD BE Foreword For some time many of the Federation of Small Businesses’ members in Wales have had concerns about the Welsh economy, and have questioned whether economic policymaking in Wales really meets the needs of their businesses and the communities they serve. With this in mind, FSB Wales decided to commission a substantial piece of work – one which would look at what is going on within the Welsh economy, and suggest alternative approaches to yield a better future for small businesses and communities within Wales. We felt that an outside perspective would be essential to that task. With that in mind, the team at CRESC was a natural choice for us, as we felt their previous work on the foundational economy and industry supply chains would bring valuable insights to the work. The result of the project is this independent report What Wales Could Be. It is a report that challenges much of the received wisdom that exists around the Welsh economy. However, in its recognition of the role of grounded firms it reflects many of the experiences of the FSB’s 10,000 members from across Wales. Not all of the recommendations in this report will find their way into FSB Wales policy, but it has shaped key recommendations in the FSB Wales manifesto for the next Welsh Government. The conclusions reached by CRESC may be challenging to some in Wales, but I think that the emphasis on grounded firms and its call for government to ‘up the ask’ from big business strikes a chord with many of our members here in Wales. -

10 indulge rude food ir sanghvi S G The World’s Best Indian Chefs s As Gaggan closes, a look at the other stars of Indian cuisine around the globe n foodie circles, the most famous Indian restaurant in the world is Bangkok’s Gaggan. It has two Michelin stars (the highest in Thailand), was rated as Asia’s Number One restaurant for four years and this year, it Icame fourth in the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. By the time you read this however, Gaggan will be on the verge of closing. Gaggan will serve its last meal on August 24 and then shut down forever. The chef Gaggan Anand and his team will move to a new location in Bangkok and reopen, with a different ownership structure and probably, a slightly different name. I am sure the new restaurant will see the hottest opening in the world – Gaggan Anand has promised to outdo even his own epic performance – but I am still sad to see Gaggan close. It was the first (and only) Indian restaurant to appear high up on lists of the world’s best restaurants, to attract so much foodie attention and to host such great global chef su- perstars as Massimo Bottura, Vladimir Myshkin and Dabiz Munoz, who all came to cook with Gaggan. The truth is that Indian food abroad has never quite got A RECORD-MAKING RESTAURANT the respect it deserves. Even in London, long a centre of Gaggan in Bangkok was the first and only Indian restaurant to Indian cooking, it has been a hard struggle for Indian chefs appear high up on lists of the world’s best restaurants to earn the accolades they deserve. -

Star for Soul Curry The culinary edifice that is Veeraswamy, a nine decade-old Indian restaurant on London’s Regent Street, has been awarded the highly coveted Michelin Star for 2017. Written by Shantanu David | Published:October 11, 2016 12:15 am Interiors of the restaurant When the “British Empire Exhibition” was officially opened by King George V on his namesake saint’s day, April 23, 1924, it was a spectacle like London had never seen before. Stretched over the expanse of Wembley Park, it featured the wonders and mysteries from all four corners of the empire, which encompassed 58 regions at the time, and was the first exhibition ever to feature food stalls. Exotic goods from around the world clamoured for attention, each in their own pavilion and inspired from the nation they represented. If the Burmese pavilion was built into a temple, the Arab nations were represented by a fort in the desert. And on one side of the high-towered and domed Indian Pavilion, lay an Indian restaurant with cooks imported from the country, and excellently run by one Edward Palmer, of E. P. Veerasawmy & Co.. Palmer was particularly well-versed in various Indian cuisines and would go on to write and publish Indian Cookery: For Use in All Countries by E.P. Veerasawmy, a comprehensive tome on the subject in 1936. It was in his blood, one might say; his great-grandmother was the Indian princess Begum Faiz Baksh, while his grandmother was another Indian lady, possibly named Veeraswamy. After the exhibition finally shut its grounds two years later, Palmer having run a highly successful food operation, decided to expand, and opened UK’s first Indian restaurant — the more authentic-sounding Veeraswamy, located just off the venerable Regent Street in the West End of London. -

There are few who would disagree with that sentiment, and we have made significant progress in the intervening years. The inclusion of universal health coverage (UHC) in the Sustainable Development Goals is both cause and symptom of a wider global movement. Whilst the argument for UHC has been won, what this means in reality is less clear for many countries. If we fail to provide the levels of care needed to fulfil the promise of UHC then the progress we have made will be meaningless.
