We will read a range of authors including Haruki Murakami, Yoko Ogawa, Hiromi Kawakami, Mieko Kawakami, and Yoko Tawada. Through a close study of the fiction as well as the publication venues, we will explore the diverse themes and styles of contemporary Japanese literature and how selected works have been introduced and circulated in the global market. The course will be conducted in English. Although the readings will be offered in English translation, you are encouraged to read the stories in the original Japanese as well. Vishnu Vardhan, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli-17 [email protected] and Dr. Suresh Frederick, Associate Professor and UG Head, Department of English, Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli-17 [email protected] During an interview in a smoky subterranean cafe in Jimbocho, Tokyo’s book district,Ms Muratais regarded as one of the most exciting contemporary writers in Japan. She mainly focuses on adolescent sexuality in her works. It includes asexuality, involuntary celibacy and voluntary celibacy. Her works are “Jyunyū (Breastfeeding)”, ” Gin iro no uta (Silver Song)”, “Mausu (Mouse)”, ” Hoshi gasūmizu (Water for the Stars)”, ”Hakobune (Ark)”, “Shiro-iro no machi no, sono hone no taion no (Of Bones, Of Body Heat, of Whitening City)”, “Tadaima tobira”, ” Satsujinshussan”, “Shōmetsusekai (Dwindling World)”, “Konbininingen (Convenience Store Woman)” and “Clean Breed (A Clean Marriage)”. Contemporary Japanese writers of Sayaka Murata - Hiromi Kawakami, Fuminori Nakamura, Hitomi Kanehara, Risa Wataya ,Hideo Furukaw, Mieko Kawakami, Nao-Cola Yamazaki and Ryu Murakami. “When something was strange, everyone thought they had the right to came stomping in all over your life to figure out why” (Murata, Convenience Store Woman 36). The tale began with a girl named Keiko Furukura, who was the protagonist of this short novel. She was a simple and normal innocent girl;she was living as a spinster. She never had a relationship even lovemaking. But she was happy with it. She recognized that she was being different from others. She decided to fit her in the machine of society. -

We discussed Tokyo Ueno Station by Yu Miri, translated from the Japanese by Morgan Giles, and published in paperback and as an eBook by Tilted Axis Press. About the Book ‘Kazu's painful past and ghostly present are the subject of … the latest book by Korean-Japanese author Yu Miri ... It's a relatively slim novel that packs an enormous emotional punch, thanks to Yu's gorgeous, haunting writing and Morgan Giles' wonderful translation’ Michael Schaub, npr.org ‘How Kazu comes to be homeless, and then to haunt the park, is what keeps us reading, trying to understand the tragedy of this ghostly everyman. Deftly translated by Morgan Giles’ Lauren Elkin, Guardian We chose this book for its restrained but powerful portrayal of a homeless man who had worked on building sites for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and now, as preparations for the 2020 games are being made, finds himself one of many living in the park next to the station. This year only about thirty had turned up so far. The festival was going to be a quiet affair. It wasn’t just a matter of numbers – there were no children running about, no youngsters in bright-patterned yukata: almost everybody was in their fifties or sixties. No young ones, and nobody older either. Perhaps the old folk didn’t have the energy to come out in the heat – still almost 30C in late afternoon. Or maybe they weren’t in the village at all – perhaps they’d lost the will even to come home, and were spending obon at their emergency pre-fabs in distant towns. The old folk of every family had lived here for decades. They’d never had the feeling of ‘coming home’. ‘Home’ wasn’t something far away. It was here. They were here. Home was at the soles of their feet. Not much good for running or jumping, those flat feet were always firmly planted on home ground. To the youngsters, they were tied down – they un- derstood that in a way; but they’d never thought twice about staying – they’d spent their lives here with no uncertainty, no complaint. They’d believed it was only the call of heaven that would lift their feet away from home. RESUMO: Este texto é uma apresentação sucinta do percurso da literatura japonesa por meio de sua produção literária resultante das transformações do Japão, com o propósito de mostrar parte de suas peculiaridades e das condições de produção que favoreceram o seu desenvolvimento. Sem a pretensão de situar a literatura japonesa no tempo e no espaço, ou de tecer considerações minuciosas sobre as infl uências externas, em possíveis comparações com outros universos lite- rários como o brasileiro, traz uma breve consideração sobre a divulgação da literatura japonesa no Brasil. As produções literárias foram organizadas em forma de quadros com obras e autores enquanto uma mostra restrita a partir de uma escolha livre. Everyday Fascism in Contemporary Japan Etsko Kasai Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2013 ©2013 Etsko Kasai All rights reserved Abstract Everyday Fascism in Contemporary Japan Etsko Kasai This dissertation uses the concept of fascism in order to examine the socio-culture of contemporary Japan. Defined in terms of its commodity structure, fascism turns out to be a relevant concept to Japan not only prior to and during the Asia-Pacific War (1931-1945) but also from the postwar days to date. Against various forms of culturalism that claim that the country is essentially totalitarian and its culture is innately violent, I will argue that the country has shared fascist conditions with those other countries and regions that operate in the mode of mechanical reproduction. While the overall mode of mass-reproduction has been further articulated by different moments, such as late capitalism or post-modernism, the cultural and political condition of reducing singular lives and events into standardized forms has continued in these countries and regions roughly since the 1920s. My view will expand the horizon of studies of fascism, which has hitherto been limited to Europe between the two World Wars. At the same time, the view of fascism’s generality should not be blind to local inflections and historical specificities. In this dissertation, I will examine such trans-war Japanese institutions as the ideologies of emperorship, formation of the petty bourgeois class, and corporatist organizations of gender and locality. -

Guevarra Ateneo de Manila University Abstract The case of Haruki Murakami’s rise to dominance in both the Japanese and global literary fields is truly exceptional. It is rare for a single author to intro- duce so much innovation in a literary field in his own lifetime. However, due to the fruitful combination of Murakami’s own talent, the cooperation of his literary collaborators, Murakami, Inc., the advancement in technology (i.e., the Internet) that has allowed Murakami to be in touch with his readers, and his exceptional understanding of English, Murakami has contributed much to Japan’s contemporary literature in the age of global literature. In addition to these factors, it must be emphasized that Murakami’s agency of transforming the conservative literary field of Japan into something more accessible to both the Japanese and the non-Japanese has made Murakami a force that has also transformed Japan’s Post-World War, modern literary field into a field that is open to accommodate postmodern techniques in writing, reflective of its historical position or context and global in its reach.
