Literatura Japonesa – Um olhar curioso sobre produções curiosas Por Neide Hissae Nagae* *Neide Hissae Nagae é docente e pesquisadora do Curso de Graduação em Língua e Literatura Japonesa e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Língua, Literatura e Cultura Japonesa do De- partamento de Letras Orientais da Faculdade de Filosofi a, Letras e Ciências Humanas da USP. Desenvolve trabalhos nas áreas de Língua e Literatura Japonesa Clássica e Moderna, tradução e pensamento japonês. RESUMO: Este texto é uma apresentação sucinta do percurso da literatura japonesa por meio de sua produção literária resultante das transformações do Japão, com o propósito de mostrar parte de suas peculiaridades e das condições de produção que favoreceram o seu desenvolvimento. Sem a pretensão de situar a literatura japonesa no tempo e no espaço, ou de tecer considerações minuciosas sobre as infl uências externas, em possíveis comparações com outros universos lite- rários como o brasileiro, traz uma breve consideração sobre a divulgação da literatura japonesa no Brasil. As produções literárias foram organizadas em forma de quadros com obras e autores enquanto uma mostra restrita a partir de uma escolha livre. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: percursos da literatura japonesa; autores japoneses; obras japonesas; revis- tas e prêmios literários japoneses; adaptações de obras literárias para o cinema. Os Primórdios da Literatura Japonesa Uma rica e vasta produção de obras desenvolve-se em solo nipônico desde o início do sé- culo VIII a partir da cultura importada do continente chinês, sobretudo dos ideogramas, uma vez que os japoneses eram ágrafos. A escrita chinesa foi empregada inicialmente pelos burocratas, religiosos e homens cultos da aristocracia japonesa. -

2 Interview with Roland Kelts, contributing editor of MONKEY Magazine MONKEY Magazine Exchanges Literatures Between the US & Japan By Japan SPOTLIGHT Roland Kelts, a distinguished Japanese culture expert, is contributing editor of the English-language edition of the literary magazine MONKEY – a journal that focuses on contemporary Japanese literature and American literature in translation. He is also author of the best-selling book Japanamerica, and his articles, essays and stories appear in several publications. He has taught at many universities, including New York University and the University of Tokyo. In an interview with Naoyuki Haraoka, editor-in-chief of Japan SPOTLIGHT, he talks about the birth of MONKEY, the improving quality of translation, Japanese women writers, commonalities between Japan and the United States, and cultural exchange in Asia. Everyday Fascism in Contemporary Japan Etsko Kasai Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2013 ©2013 Etsko Kasai All rights reserved Abstract Everyday Fascism in Contemporary Japan Etsko Kasai This dissertation uses the concept of fascism in order to examine the socio-culture of contemporary Japan. Defined in terms of its commodity structure, fascism turns out to be a relevant concept to Japan not only prior to and during the Asia-Pacific War (1931-1945) but also from the postwar days to date. Against various forms of culturalism that claim that the country is essentially totalitarian and its culture is innately violent, I will argue that the country has shared fascist conditions with those other countries and regions that operate in the mode of mechanical reproduction. While the overall mode of mass-reproduction has been further articulated by different moments, such as late capitalism or post-modernism, the cultural and political condition of reducing singular lives and events into standardized forms has continued in these countries and regions roughly since the 1920s. My view will expand the horizon of studies of fascism, which has hitherto been limited to Europe between the two World Wars. At the same time, the view of fascism’s generality should not be blind to local inflections and historical specificities. In this dissertation, I will examine such trans-war Japanese institutions as the ideologies of emperorship, formation of the petty bourgeois class, and corporatist organizations of gender and locality. -

The Creation of a Japanese Writer for the Global Age The Case of Haruki Murakami Alona U. Guevarra Ateneo de Manila University Abstract The case of Haruki Murakami’s rise to dominance in both the Japanese and global literary fields is truly exceptional. It is rare for a single author to intro- duce so much innovation in a literary field in his own lifetime. However, due to the fruitful combination of Murakami’s own talent, the cooperation of his literary collaborators, Murakami, Inc., the advancement in technology (i.e., the Internet) that has allowed Murakami to be in touch with his readers, and his exceptional understanding of English, Murakami has contributed much to Japan’s contemporary literature in the age of global literature. In addition to these factors, it must be emphasized that Murakami’s agency of transforming the conservative literary field of Japan into something more accessible to both the Japanese and the non-Japanese has made Murakami a force that has also transformed Japan’s Post-World War, modern literary field into a field that is open to accommodate postmodern techniques in writing, reflective of its historical position or context and global in its reach.
