Cooke Technology, Market, and Complexity (2017) 3:9 DOI 10.1186/s40852-017-0060-5 RESEARCH Open Access Complex spaces: global innovation networks & territorial innovation systems in information & communication technologies Philip Cooke Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract Center for Innovation and Regional Development, West Norway This paper brings together two related bodies of theory that assist understanding University of Applied Sciences, of processes of socio-technical system change on the global scale. These are, first, Bergen, Norway the Global Value Chain perspective (GVC) that has now mutated into Global Production Networks (GPN) and, more recently, Global Innovation Networks (GIN). Examples of why this should be are exemplified (e.g. Scandinavia’smobile telephony ‘creative destruction’). The second perspective is that of Territorial Innovation Systems. This addresses the innovative core of ‘creative destruction’ events which, in turn, explains economic growth and development. In recent times this has been significantly undergirded by means of concepts like ‘relatedness’, ‘proximity’ and ‘path dependence’. These perspectives are combined to produce a framework for analysing the contribution of an increasingly commoditised ICT assembly industry to high-value, customised ‘chipset’ and ‘apps’ design around smartphones, netbooks and flat panel display (FPD) technologies that express the GIN/TIS complex in global ‘value curve’ integration. Here ‘creative destruction’ recombinations arise because, from an evolutionary perspective, the regions in which they emerge display technological ‘relatedness’ and regional ‘regimes’ that foster co-innovation, in this case ICT-based co-innovation. Introduction This paper will home in on a spatial understanding of today’s rapidly changing ICT technology platforms in convergent ICT in the smartphones, tablets, netbooks and flat screen products businesses in key innovative growth and transitioning regions of northern Europe, California and Asia Pacific, notably China, Taiwan and South Korea.

Media Contact: Atomic PR for shopkick Martha Shaughnessy 415.593.1400 [email protected] From Browsing to Buying, shopkick’s New iPad App Makes Shopping More Interactive from the Couch to the Cash Register Adapting to Cross-Platform Consumption Habits Supports Physical Retail PALO ALTO, Calif. (March 21, 2013) – Shopkick, the most widely used real-world shopping app, today releases an iPad app to make an increasingly interactive shopping experience across mobile devices and into the physical store. Users can window shop at home, browsing content from shopkick’s “lookbooks” and accruing rewards on the home’s best planning device: the iPad. The iPad app perfectly positions shopkick for new feature rollouts that will deepen the social shopping experience and boost the contextually aware digital layer shopkick adds to the physical shopping world. “Consumers love to use their iPad at home on the couch, and their phone at the store, but they are the same person, and they want the same app to solve all their shopping needs,” said Cyriac Roeding, CEO of shopkick. “We’re working toward integrating discovery, payment, loyalty, promotions in one app across mobile platforms, and retailers welcome that. They want to be relevant in shoppers’ new multi- screen environments. shopkick delivers the right touch points at the right moments in a shopper’s journey from couch to cash register.” In 2013, Forrester Research predicts that the web will influence $1.3 trillion dollars of in-store sales, more than five times of the $230 million that will be spent online this year. People are spending more time online via apps than traditional web: 70 minutes per day on the web vs.

January 11, 2011 (1/11/11) iYear One (2010 Being The “Zero Index” Into the i-Time Array) I'm going to wear the CTO “hat” here at MLD for a minute. Mainly so I can look back at this a few years from now and review myself. In the technology division I'll call this a “Technology Discussion” - and see if somehow without leveraged speculation this “knowledge” (tech) can't be used by “management” to capitalize – somehow. January 7, 2011 A couple of observations are of note for the 7th. • In visiting the local hospital I saw all of the doctors, nurses and staff carrying around big, fat stacks of paper (charts, inserts, notes, prescriptions). No iPad, no Tablet-PC, no PDAs or Palms, no iPhone or Droid, no laptop – mountains of paper and everyone looking for pens. In 2011. *** • Visiting the patient of the above hospital after the paper-mountain and surgery: Something I haven't seen in... well, maybe 15 years: An 80 year old, a 40-something, a 50-something, a 5-1/2 year old all gathered around a “light box” telling stories and looking at pictures – an iPad. (Off to the side was a 30-something fingering the nonsense out of a droid/android phone, but since not “social” the droid- isolationist only gets parenthetical mention for now.) *** RE: first bullet – paper hospital. I am, after 30 years in the digi-computer industry, shocked endlessly that we are back (devolved) to the redundant, wasteful, un-green, error prone, risky (loss, theft, HIPAA?) practice of the “one copy” of medicine being scribbled illegibly by the “initialed” people; then transported, cared for (sort of) and transcribed by the “almost minimum wage non-initialed clerical” people.

THE APPSMITHS: COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, AFFECT AND IDEOLOGY AMONG COCOA DEVELOPERS FROM NEXT TO IPHONE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy| by Hansen Hsu May 2015 © 2015 Hansen Hsu THE APPSMITHS: COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, AFFECT AND IDEOLOGY AMONG COCOA DEVELOPERS FROM NEXT TO IPHONE Hansen Hsu, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 This dissertation is an ethnographic study, accomplished through semi-structured interviews and participant observation, of the cultural world of third party Apple software developers who use Apple’s Cocoa libraries to create apps. It answers the questions: what motivates Apple developers’ devotion to Cocoa technology, and why do they believe it is a superior programming environment? What does it mean to be a “good” Cocoa programmer, technically and morally, in the Cocoa community of practice, and how do people become one? I argue that in this culture, ideologies, normative values, identities, affects, and practices interact with each other and with Cocoa technology in a seamless web, which I call a “techno-cultural frame.” This frame includes the construction of a developer’s identity as a vocational craftsman, and a utopian vision of software being developed by millions of small-scale freelance developers, or “indies,” rather than corporations. This artisanal production is made possible by the productivity gains of Cocoa technology, which ironically makes indies dependent on Apple for tools. This contradiction is reconciled through quasi-religious narratives about Apple and Steve Jobs, which enrolls developers into seeing themselves as partners in a shared mission with Apple to empower users with technology.
