  • Dead Heroes and Living Saints: Orthodoxy
Dead Heroes and Living Saints: Orthodoxy, Nationalism, and Militarism in Contemporary Russia and Cyprus By Victoria Fomina Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Professor Vlad Naumescu Professor Dorit Geva CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2019 Budapest, Hungary Statement I hereby declare that this dissertation contains no materials accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions and no materials previously written and / or published by any other person, except where appropriate acknowledgement is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality.

  • Ozlem Dagman Thesis
THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF TEACHER IDENTITY: AN INTERGENERATIONAL COMPARISON OF TURKISH CYPRIOT AND GREEK CYPRIOT TEACHER NARRATIVES ÖZLEM DAĞMAN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2018 University of Brighton ABSTRACT This research focuses on the social construction of teacher identities of state primary school teachers in Cyprus. It is a comparative, bi-communal study based on the life stories of three generations of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot teachers in relation to historical and cultural contexts of Cyprus. State primary school teachers have been selected as the focus of the study as their education/training has been standardised and led by state-run institutions across the divide in Cyprus. The purpose of the research is to present an analysis which Cypriot teachers across the borders can relate to and learn from. The main areas of enquiry in this thesis are teachers’ perceptions of their professional identities and the influence of individual and collective memory on constructing those professional identities. The study employs Qualitative Research Methods, specifically Narrative Approach and Life History Methodology. Constructionist and Interpretivist epistemological positions have informed the thesis. An analytical framework has been devised using Ivor Goodson’s ‘Narrative Theory’, Berger and Luckman’s ‘Social Construction of Reality’, Vivien Burr’s Social Constuctionism, Maurice Halbwachs’ ‘Collective Memory’ and Keith Turvey’s Narrative Ecologies works. The participants of the study have been organised into three generational cohorts, which have been divided with reference to 1974, the division of the island, and with reference to the shifting historical periods during which they were educated.

Kostiantyn BALABANOV, rector of Mariupol State University, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Cyprus in Mariupol, Corresponding member of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, PhD in political sciences, Professor, Head of NDA International Relations and Foreign Policy Department CYPRUS IS THE PARTNER OF UKRAINE he article is dedicated to the issues of formation and development of cooperation between Ukraine and the TRepublic of Cyprus. Modern state of diplomatic, political, juridical cooperation between two countries is under consideration. Current state of political contacts between Ukraine and the Republic of Cyprus has also been analyzed in the article. The Republic of Cyprus is one of the most energetically developing states in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Since its independence in 1960 Cyprus has achieved economic progress, thus securing its leading positions in tourism and international investments. Despite of that fact that the country was de facto split in two parts in 1974 the Greek Cypriots have achieved spectacular results ranking among the most developed countries worldwide. In 2004 the Republic of Cyprus became the member of the European Union. Nowadays the country plays key roles in the region from the economic and geopolitical standpoint. Cyprus’ experience of the EU integration is very valuable for Ukraine. Historically, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic established the diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cyprus at the ambassadorial level on August 16–18, 1960 right after Cyprus had declared its independence as the result of the long national liberation movement. The Soviet Union supported the Cyprus independency; the USSR government maintained close contacts with archbishop Makarios, the leader of national liberation movement who was elected the first President of Cyprus.

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the invention of Cyprus’ ancient history through the diaspora of Cypriot antiquities in the latter half of nineteenth century and the role of the modern museum in it (1860-1900). It maps the movement of the objects from their excavation sites, to their circulation in metropolitan museums and, finally to their display in museum galleries. In doing so this thesis explores the emergence of archaeology as a field-based discipline in the broader colonial, imperial and geopolitical context. The research of this project was conducted mainly at the Cyprus State Archives, the Greek and Roman Departmental Archives (British Museum), Dartmouth College Archives (NH). The first part of the thesis provides the theoretical framework in which this research is situated. Chapter 1 introduces the project, its research questions, its research questions and outcomes. Chapter 2 discusses the literature providing the main concepts that formed the arguments of this thesis. Chapter 3 contextualizes the diaspora of Cypriot antiquities within the broader history of archaeology and Chapter 4 overviews the methodology followed and the archival sources that were used for this project.
