MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Friends, Hopefully, the front cover intrigued you to learn more about the family MICHAEL J. KALVORT, CPRE photographed and their story. This past June, Keeton Nimrod, a 14-year- old from Kansas battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, visited the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center with his family to fulfill his wish: to take care of sea turtles. Over a few days, he lived his dream as an Honorary Sea Turtle Technician: going on a Turtle Walk, helping to release sea turtle hatchlings, CITY COUNCIL OF BOCA RATON and providing care and examinations of the turtles in Gumbo Limbo Nature 201 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33432 Center’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility. Gumbo Limbo, the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, and the City of Boca Raton have a strong partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. MAYOR Scott Singer Over this summer, Gumbo Limbo hosted three other “wishes.” During the wish experience—lending a helping hand to our technicians, feeding, and DEPUTY MAYOR Jeremy Rodgers assisting with animal care—a remarkable thing happens: The children see COUNCIL MEMBERS Monica Mayotte the other side of treatment. They become the doctor, not the patient. This provides perspective and impacts healing. I would like to thank the entire Andrea Levine O'Rourke Gumbo Limbo team, including volunteers, for their ongoing assistance in Andy Thomson providing amazing experiences for every person (and animal) who visits the nature center. CITY MANAGER Leif J. Ahnell, CPA, CGFO The other thing you might have noticed in the cover photo is the beautiful artwork at the entrance to the central tunnel located in Spanish River Park. This one-of-a-kind piece, masterfully painted by Tom D’Auria, is one of six unique installations of art. Each of the Spanish River Park beach tunnels was painted by a different local artist, and all the pieces enhance the GREATER BOCA RATON BEACH and PARK DISTRICT serenity of nature within the park and the beach. Kudos to the Mayor and 21618 Saint Andrews Boulevard, Boca Raton, FL 33433 City Council, the Art in Public Places Advisory Board, and the Development (561) 417-4599 Services Department for their vision to further enhance our community. I challenge you to take some time to visit Spanish River Park, take a walk, enjoy the artwork, and take a break and a breather from your hectic life. You’ll leave refreshed and will believe in the restorative power of nature! CHAIR Susan Vogelgesang Parks have the ability to nurture, heal, inspire, challenge, and capture your VICE-CHAIR Erin A. Wright imagination! Every day, the 800-plus team members in your Recreation Services Department work hard to provide amenities that enable our SECRETARY-TREASURER Craig F. Ehrnst citizens and visitors to enjoy the best things about Boca Raton: our green spaces, native preserves, and areas to reconnect with nature. COMMISSIONERS Robert K. Rollins, Jr. Steven M. Engel Finally, you’ve most likely already seen information on our ongoing Community Needs Assessment.
