Women and Rock Music1
Atlantis Vol. 10 No. 1 Fall/ Automne 1984 Women and Rock Music1 Deborah Harding New Zealand and Emily Nett The University of Manitoba ABSTRACT Rock music is the most misogynistic and aggressive form of music currently listened to. Women's place in it since the 1950's is described and analyzed in this article. Rock music was originally a working-class male challenge to the established symbolic order. In terms of the revenue generated by the industry thirty years later, it is the most important cultural expression of popular music. The enterprise is almost exclusively male, the majority of listeners are male, and even though women singers contributed in the early 1960's, there have been only a few female performers. An analysis of feminine representations in rock music lyrics and album covers in 1981 reveals a variety of male-identified images of women. In view of the cultural context in which rock music originated and the industry developed, the recent penetration by a few more women into the industry raises questions about whether numbers will continue to increase and, even if they do, whether rock music constitutes an appropriate voice in which women can authentically express themselves. Women's images—especially those we Music, unlike many other forms of media, is a choose ourselves—can both reflect and deter• direct expression of ideas. Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -
At the Start of the New Millennium and Exactly 35 Years Since The
At the start of the new millennium and exactly 35 years since the foundation of Germany’s most successful hard rock band of all time, SCORPIONS Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs can look back together on a spectacular career in the international music business. The Scorpions 1965 Like many youngsters born in post-war Germany, Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker were influenced by the music and other life-enhancing delights imported into their homeland by American GI’s – Elvis Presley, chewing gum, blue jeans and leather jackets, but most of all rock ‘n’ roll. From an early age, both of them had an irresistible urge to grab a guitar and step into the limelight. In the early 1960s the Beatles sparked off the beat revolution. By the mid-1960s Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker, both of whom were blessed with understanding parents, had also taken to the stage with their beat groups. In 1965 Rudolf Schenker started up the SCORPIONS in Hanover. Rudolf’s younger brother Michael Schenker was, like Matthias Jabs, smitten by beat music and the burgeoning rock culture. Guitarist and songwriter Rudolf Schenker’s earliest influences were the raw riffs of bands like The Yardbirds, Pretty Things and Spooky Tooth, who in those days were regarded as the real hard rockers. At New Year 1970, the younger Schenker brother Michael, who despite his youth had already established himself as an outstanding guitarist, left the Hanover-based group Copernicus, along with singer and composer Klaus Meine, to join Rudolf Schenker’s SCORPIONS. Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine teamed up to form the accomplished Schenker/Meine songwriting duo, so laying the foundations for a spectacular success story. -

"Vico's Homer and the "Oral Versus Written" Dilemma" Steven M. Berry Note: The author is in the process of revising this manuscript and welcomes suggestions and corrections. Please email him at [email protected]. VICO’S HOMER AND THE “ORAL VERSUS WRITTEN” DILEMMA by Steven M. Berry, Ph.D. Verisimilia namque vera inter et falsa sunt quasi media. “For indeed, probabilities (things that seem true) are midway, more or less, between true things and false things.” My translation — Giambattista Vico, De nostri temporis Studiorum Ratione (1709) Tutte l’antiche storie profane hanno favolosi in princìpi. “All the profane stories of antiquity were originally recited orally, as fables.” (my translation) §122. It is . [a] property of the human mind that whenever men can form no idea of distant and unknown things, they judge them by what is familiar and at hand. —Giambattista Vico, La Scienza Nuova (Bergrin and Fisch translation) 1 INTRODUCTION The inspiration for this study has come from the enthusiasm which Gregory Nagy, Francis Jones Professor of Classics at Harvard University, has shared with me over several years regarding the insights of Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) into the true nature of Homeric transmission. Vico’s appeal for Nagy, and for most Vico specialists, as well, resides in the Neapolitan’s visionary realization, at least in places throughout his opus, that the common image of the “blind singer” as it has come down through the European tradition is a distortion, because it has consistently presented one supreme, universally lionized yet existentially elusive “oral poet who” left to posterity a pair of epic masterpieces which were eventually transformed into “texts.” In these loci Vico describes a group of blind, destitute singers wandering throughout Greece. -

Scorpions FAN TV
Presents SCORPIONS Scorpions are a hard rock band from Hannover, Germany, best known for their 1984 rock anthem “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and their singles “Wind of Change”, “No One Like You”, “Still Loving You”, and “Send Me an Angel”. The band has sold over 100 million records worldwide. Along with Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, KISS, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple they are one of the most successfull hard rock/heavy metal acts. The “Scorps” known to metal heads of the time, reminisce more of Lonesome Crow · Fly to the Rainbow · In Trance · Virgin Killer · Taken by Force · Lovedrive · Animal Magnetism. Only after the commercial success of “Blackout” did they start to get heavily pushed into the mainstream media of the U.S. market by Mercury records. Wind of change and Rock you like a Hurricane pushed The Scorps into the Limelight because of the heavy MTV push to please young rockers of the time. Rock you like a Hurricane was overplayed by MTV because RCA wouldn’t let MTV have any of Scorpions old videos. MTV was the no mans land. They had no money to buy a big video collection of any artists and the owners of MTV got no money/backing of any big studio. The consensus of the time thought MTV wouldn’t hold a dime to to the already popular television/music shows of the time “Midnight Special, Hee Haw, Soul Train and American Bandstand” and would fade away into the history books.
